A spirited Canada pulled off a surprise win over Pakistan to set up a clash with hosts India in the finals of the second World Cup Kabaddi to be played at Ludhiana Sunday. India reached the finals of the 20-day tournament easily, defeating the Italian team 74-15 in their semi-final match played at the flood-lit multi-purpose stadium here Friday evening. But the big upset was in the second semi-final match between Pakistan and Canada late Friday. The Canadian side finally won 44-39 in a closely fought match. The aggressive Canadian side kept up the pressure on the Pakistani side all through the game with both teams locked in a neck and neck fight. At half time, both teams were at 20-20 points. The Pakistani side, which was the runners up in the first edition of the tournament last year, was expected to reach the finals this time also but the Canadian side, which also comprised Punjabi-origin youth settled in the country, got the better of them. The final match of the men's Kabaddi, in which the winner team takes home the prize money of Rs.2 crore and the runner-up takes Rs.1 crore, will be played at industrial city Ludhiana's Guru Nanak Dev stadium Sunday evening. In the women's section, in which four teams are participating for the first time, hosts India trounced the US team 57-7 in the last league match Friday evening. Both teams have already reached the finals of the women's event. The finals will also be played in Ludhiana Sunday. The India women's team overcame the trauma of Thursday evening's accident in which their team bus caught fire in an accident with an Army truck near Bathinda town. The drivers of the bus and a Punjab Police gypsy piloting the bus were killed in the accident. Some of the women team members also received injuries and burns in the incident as people broke the bus window-panes to rescue them.

The voices of dissent against former state DGP Paramdeep Singh Gill, who is contesting from the Moga seat on a SAD(B) ticket, are getting shriller. And going by the tenor and tone of these voices, it will take quiet an effort on the part of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal in not only convincing these voices but also motivating them to back the candidate who is being preferred by both Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the deputy chief minister. Dr K S Gill — former president of SAD(B), Moga, who is also one of the known Akali leaders in this area — led a team of 28 municipal councillors to meet Sukhbir at the latter’s village. Gill’s contention: “The background of a person shows what he is. Paramdeer Singh Gill is basically a Congressman. His father Nachhattar Singh Gill had deserted the Akali Dal not once but twice for Congress. Despite this he was made an MP with the support of Akali Dal. Parkash Singh Badal had also made him the chairman of the Subordinate Services Board.” He added: “The Akalis of this region have worked very hard to convert this traditional a Congress seat into an Akali seat. Under the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal, we have been able to put the city of Moga on the national map. This city now dreams of becoming a corporation from a council. All this hard work will be undone by one wrong decision. As a senior Akali leader, who is 75 years old, my job is to caution the leaders of my party and that is what I am going to do.” When reminded that the final decision regarding allocation of tickets rests with the party, Gill said: “This is correct and we will follow the party’s command. But then, senior leaders need to consider the fact that it is one thing to have a highly-charged motivated worker during the elections and another to fight an election with a worker who feels he is being forced to do so. The bottomline is that this ticket should be given to the family of Jathedar Tota Singh and as the senior Jathedar is contesting the Dharmkot seat, his son Barjinder Singh Brar is the right choice.” Gill is not alone. Gurminderjeet Singh Babloo, senior vice-president of Youth Akali Dal, said: “We are not getting into diplomacy. This seat should be given to Barjinder Brar and we will ensure that the party wins this seat. The family of DGP P S Gill is highly respected in the area but they are primarily Congressmen. The party leaders should not forget the hard work Jathedar Tota Singh’s family has put in this area.” When asked, district BJP vice-president, Anil Bansal, said: “I could have said that this seat be given to a BJP leader, but that will be wrong. This is an Akali seat and should be given to a person who is identified with the party. People in this region identify Gill with Congress.”

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today urged Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to act swiftly to bring back the black money stashed in foreign banks, as per the record available with his Ministry. Addressing a rally after laying down the foundation stone of a high-level bridge over the Satluj river at a cost of Rs 102 crore, Mr Badal said the SAD-BJP government had been demanding the Congress-led UPA government to immediately bring back the ill gotten money hidden in the foreign banks so that it could be judiciously utilised for funding welfare schemes for millions of poor across the country. The Chief Minister said their MLAs and MPs had been persuading the Central government time and again to retrieve the huge undisclosed amount kept abroad, but the latter had so far paid no heed to their demand. "If the Centre does not initiate any action in this regard promptly, our MPs will be forced to take up this matter in the forthcoming Winter session of Parliament to seek its intervention in the larger public interest'', he warned. Listing achievements of the state government, Mr Badal sressed the need for continuity of the government for another term of five years in order to sustain the tempo of overall development on one hand and to accomplish the unfinished agenda on the other. He said the unprecedented development achieved by the SAD-BJP alliance during the present tenure was beyond comparison with during the period of Congress regime, spanning over four-and-a-half decades.

US President Barack Obama and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard today unveiled plans to deepen the US military presence in the Asia-Pacific, with 2,500 US marines operating out of a de facto base in northern Australia.
China, already worried the United States is caging it in, immediately questioned whether strengthening military alliances would help the region when economic woes put a premium on cooperation.
"With my visit to the region, I am making it clear that the United States is stepping up its commitment to the entire Asia-Pacific region," Obama told a joint news conference with Gillard in Canberra.
From next year, US troops and aircraft will operate out of the tropical city of Darwin, only 820 km from Indonesia, able to respond quickly to any humanitarian and security issues in Southeast Asia, where disputes over sovereignty of the South China Sea are causing rising tensions.
"It is appropriate for us to make sure...that the security architecture for the region is updated for the 21st century and this initiative is going to allow us to do that," Obama said.
He stressed that it was not an attempt to isolate China which is concerned that Washington is trying to encircle it with bases in Japan and South Korea and now troops in Australia.
"The notion that we fear China is mistaken. The notion that we are looking to exclude China is mistaken," he said, adding China was not being excluded from the planned Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP) on trade. "We welcome a rising, peaceful China."
But China's rising power means it must take on greater responsibilities to ensure free trade and security in the region, he added. "It's important for them to play by the rules of the road and, in fact, help underwrite the rules that have allowed so much remarkable economic progress," he said
