Human rights abusers allowed to attend Olympic Games as Official delegates of India - British Sikhs demand answer
London : As per media reports there have been protests from the British Sikh community following news that Indian politician Jagdish Tytler may be permitted to visit the country for the Olympic Games.
The Sikh Federation (UK) says the Government is refusing to confirm if he will be allowed into the country despite opposition.
“A campaign was launched with Sikhs writing thousands of letters to UK MPs to stop Tytler leading the Indian delegation. It appears he has been dropped as leading the delegation, but there is still concern that he will be visiting the country for the games, despite requests to the Government for reassurance that he will be prevented from entering the UK” reports the AsianImage.
Amrik Singh, the Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK), is quoted to have said: “The Sikh community is deeply opposed to Tytler because of his direct involvement in the anti-Sikh pogroms of November 1984 when innocent Sikhs were killed in their thousands – often burnt alive – in around 130 cities across northern India, most notably in Delhi”.
“What is unclear is if Tytler will join a later group for the start of the Olympics. British Sikhs have been disappointed that the UK Government has been unable to confirm whether or not Tytler will be allowed to enter the UK – despite pressure from shadow Labour foreign office ministers”, he is reported to have added.
“If the Government does not stop this happening, Sikhs will then be forced to organise a peaceful protest, but as the strength of opposition is so great protesters may run into several thousand. This would be most regrettable given the positive image of the London Olympics 2012 that we all wish to portray and the support the Sikh community and the Sikh Federation (UK) specifically gave for securing the Olympics in London,” Bhai Amrik Singh added.
The Sikh Federation (UK) is planning through its human rights wing called Khalsa Human Rights to gather specific evidence from victims in the UK to provide to the UK authorities, including the police, to prevent entry to the country or possible arrest and prosecution on arrival of Indian politicians and former police officers involved in human rights abuses.
The Sikh Federation (UK) is also opposed to the potential entry to the country of KPS Gill.

Former Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has taken office as the country's 13th president.
He was sworn in by Chief Justice SH Kapadia at the central hall of parliament in the capital, Delhi.
The position is largely ceremonial but he could help determine who forms the next government after elections in 2014 if there is no clear winner.
Mr Mukherjee's term runs for five years. He replaces Pratibha Patil, who was India's first woman president.
The swearing in function was attended by Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and cabinet ministers among others.
Mr Mukherjee travelled to the parliament in a bulletproof limousine escorted by guards on horseback and security jeeps.
He was given a 21-gun salute after which he signed the oath amid applause and thumping of desks in the central hall of the parliament.
Mr Mukherjee, a veteran of the ruling Congress Party, was elected by members of the national and state parliaments on Sunday.
Correspondents say Mr Mukherjee's victory has come as a boost to the Congress Party, which has been under pressure over a series of corruption scandals and a slowdown in the Indian economy.
Mr Mukherjee has led several top government ministries during his career, including the foreign, home, defence and trade ministries.
"I have seen vast, perhaps unbelievable, changes during the journey that has brought me from the flicker of a lamp in a small Bengal village to the chandeliers of Delhi," he said in his acceptance speech.

Legendary athlete Milkha Singh still feels the pain of missing out of an Olympic medal five decades ago and says his last dream is to see an Indian win an Olympic gold in athletics.
"My last desire before I leave this world is that I want an Indian boy or a girl to win an Olympic gold medal for the country and for my sake. I failed to win it in Rome Olympics in 1960," Singh, nicknamed the “Flying Sikh,” told.
"After 2-3 years, I may be no more. Just a few days back my dear friend Dara Singh, who was like a brother to me, passed away. Whether I will live for next few years more, it is up to God. I want to see an Indian win an Olympic gold in athletics," said the 82-year-old.
Milkha clocked 45.60 seconds in the 400m race at the 1960 Rome Olympics to finish fourth in a photo finish, beaten by Malcolm Spence of South Africa for the bronze.
Milkha won gold in the 1958 and 1962 Asian Games, and is the only Indian man to win an individual athletics gold at the Commonwealth Games. He said the fact that no Indian has ever won an Olympic medal in athletics saddens him.
"Athletics is considered number one sport in the world, be it Olympics, Commonwealth or Asian Games. But since India gained Independence, only five reached the finals in athletics event and all failed to win a medal, myself including. Others were Gurbachan Singh Randhawa (1964), Shri Ram Singh (1976), P.T. Usha (1984) and Anju George. I feel ashamed that after 1947 we produced a number of athletes, but failed to win any medal," said Milkha.
Milkha knows that it would be a big ask for the current Indian athletes to win a medal in athletics in the upcoming London Olympics.
"Although it is my last desire that we should fetch a gold, but I know in reality it will be no less than a miracle if we do it in London. I have some hope from Krishna Poonia and she may get a bronze. She won gold in the Delhi Commonwealth Games," he said.
