News Khabran / $12 wins $484,703
« on: November 07, 2012, 06:02:11 AM »
Suzanne McManus certainly had the luck of the Irish with her yesterday when her $12 bet won her $484,703 in the Melbourne Cup.

Mrs McManus, mother of former Fremantle Dockers footballer turned radio host Shaun McManus, bet $12, which gave her a 50 per cent flexi dividend in the First 4.

A tribute to her family's Irish heritage, Mrs McManus picked out four Irish-bred horses - Green Moon, Fiorente, Jakkalberry and Kelinni.

They finished first, second, third and fourth respectively.

Mrs McManus, who was enjoying a special Melbourne Cup lunch with her friends at Mt Henry Tavern yesterday, said she was gobsmacked by the win.

"Once I knew I had the first four, I went over to the TAB people to check how much I'd won," she said.

"The girl looked down at the screen and all I heard was, 'Four-hundred' - I thought I'd won $400 and was thrilled. Then she said she couldn't pay me out because they didn't have enough money - she said I had won $400,000. That's when the screaming started."

The mother of five and grandmother of 11 admitted she only really bet once a year for Melbourne Cup day and needed help filling out the slip.

Mt Henry Tavern barman Ryan O'Connor, also of Irish heritage, helped Mrs McManus lodge her bet.

"I think she was probably the most clueless person I helped out today," he laughed.

"She really didn't know what she was doing but it all worked out for her. It was just her day."

Mrs McManus, who lives in Banjup with her husband Henry, said she had not yet decided how she would spend her winnings. "I rang my husband, who's overseas at the moment, to tell him I won and he didn't believe me," she said.

"I don't really believe it myself really, it's so overwhelming.

"I'm still waiting for it to sink in."
A $24 bet in the First 4 would have paid $969,406.60.

News Khabran / Stop aid to India and China.
« on: October 28, 2012, 06:52:29 AM »

Former secretary general of the United Nations Kofi Annan has asked Britain and the European Union to stop providing millions of pounds in aid
to wealthy nations like India and China. He said booming nations such as China, Brazil and India should wean themselves off development funding so it could be targeted at ‘weaker’ parts of the world instead.

Annan, a Ghanaian who was the UN secretary general from 1997 to 2006, said not all the countries, which received aid from the UK taxpayers needed it, the Daily Mail reports.

"Countries like Brazil, China, India, Ghana, Guatemala and Honduras; some of these countries can fend for themselves," the paper quoted Annan, as saying.

His comments come after International Development Secretary Justine Greening called for the European Union to stop giving aid to relatively rich nations. —

Knowledge / The First Anand Karaj
« on: October 25, 2012, 07:25:13 AM »
THE NIRANKARI MOVEMENT

The Nirankari movement of the nineteenth century is not to be confused with the Sant Nirankari  Cult which worships a living human “guru” and was responsible for igniting the 1984 holocaust through it’s 1978 massacre of innocent Sikhs with the connivance of State power.

The Founder of Nirankari movement was Baba Dayal  (1773 – 1855 A.D.).  The Nirankari movement was designed to re-articulate the worship of a formless God and stop the enroachment of Sikhism by Hindu Priests and Masands who had  been conniving through time to gain control of Sikh Gurdwaras and the coffers in such gurdwaras. In particular the Nirankari  Movement had strong objections to Hindu Brahmins performing the marriage of Sikhs.

In 1855, the son of  Baba Dayal Singh, Baba Darbara Singh Nirankari, married a Sikh couple in Rawalpindi, now in Northern Pakistan, in a ceremony called an Anand Karaj.  In this Anand Karaj, the couple  ceremony  walked around the Guru Granth Sahib four times while four verses from the  Guru Granth Sahib were recited.  There were strong objections to the ceremony. The oppponents of the ceremony were attempting to install the Anand Vivah as the marriage ceremony of the Sikhs. Anand Vivah  was in essence the Hindu marriage ceremony performed by brahmins. Anand Vivah  required the couple to walk around a ‘Holy Fire’.

Later in the year 1855, Baba Darabara Singh married Bhola Singh, the son of Nihal Singh Kakkar and the Nihali daughter of Waheguru Singh in an Anad Karaj ceremony. The painting above immortalizes this singular event.

In 1861, Baba Darbara Singh moved to marry a Sikh couple in ‘Harimandir Sahib’. The motive was to popularize and legitimize the Sikh Anand Karaj marriage ceremony. The Golden Temple was at this time under the control of Hindu Brahmin priests who had been installed by the English conquerors. The priests refused to let Darbara Singh perform the Anand Karaj ceremony.

In 1873 the Singh Sabha movement was constituted with the object of removing  the  enroaching contamination of Brahminism from the Sikh Religion.  In consequence of this movement, the Anand Karaj  ceremony established itself as a simple and authentic Sikh rite for marriage.

I believe this is great discovery by author of this article___ Excellent work
  =D>

While reading Shakespeare's poem "All the world's a stage", I was surprised to find that its conceptual framework already existed in Guru Nanak's hymn and the poem content is very similar to the hymns of Guru Nanak recorded at Ang 137-138.

"All the world's a stage" is the phrase that begins a monologue from William Shakespeare's As You Like It, spoken by the melancholy Jaques in Act II Scene VII. The speech compares the world to a stage and life to a play, and catalogues the seven stages of a man's life, sometimes referred to as the seven ages of man: infant, schoolboy, lover, soldier, justice, pantaloon, and second childhood, "sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything". It is one of Shakespeare's most frequently-quoted passages. This is sometimes thought of as Shakespeare's last speech though that is not correct. The man in the poem goes through following stages:

Infancy: In this stage he is a helpless baby and knows little.
Childhood: It is in this stage that he begins to go to school. He is reluctant to leave the protected environment of his home as he is still not confident enough to exercise his own discretion.
The lover: In this stage he is always remorseful due to some reason or other, especially the loss of love. He tries to express feelings through song or some other cultural activity.
The soldier: It is in this age that he thinks less of himself and begins to think more of others. He is very easily aroused and is hot headed. He is always working towards making a reputation for himself and gaining recognition, however short-lived it may be, even at the cost of his own life.
The justice: In this stage he has acquired wisdom through the many experiences he has had in life. He has reached a stage where he has gained prosperity and social status. He becomes very attentive of his looks and begins to enjoy the finer things of life.
Old age: He begins to lose his charm - both physical and mental. He begins to become the butt of others' jokes. He loses his firmness and assertiveness, and shrinks in stature and personality.
Mental dementia and death: He loses his status and he becomes a non-entity. He becomes dependent on others like a child and is in need of constant support before finally dying.

Guru Nanak has not described two stages of soldier and justice in the way the system existed in United Kingdom as it did not exist in India in the same manner. However he has described man's increasing desires during youth and later age.

News Khabran / Murder attempt on Golden Temple raid's General Brar
« on: October 08, 2012, 07:09:46 AM »
Lt-Gen Kuldeep Singh Brar was stabbed in an attack by four men on Sunday night, but survived.

Hundreds died when troops flushed Sikh separatist militants out of the Golden Temple in Amritsar in Punjab state.

The 78-year-old is thought still to be a target for extremist Sikhs, but the identity of his attackers is unclear.

Lt-Gen Brar, himself a Sikh, was one of the architects of Operation Bluestar, which was aimed at removing armed Sikh militants fighting for an independent homeland of Khalistan from the temple as well as rounding up other suspected Sikh militants operating elsewhere in the Punjab.

According to the Indian government, the operation left about 400 people, including 87 soldiers, dead.

Sikhs groups contest this figure, saying the number of casualties was several times higher. The Indian army's raid on the Golden Temple shocked Sikhs around the world and there is still deep resentment felt towards those who led the raid.

'Many threats'

After spending the night in hospital, Lt-Gen Brar was released on Monday. He sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.

File picture of body of Indira Gandhi being taken for cremation in 1984 Mrs Gandhi was assassinated a few months after the attack on the Golden Temple

Assassination (61K) He told the BBC's Jill McGivering on Tuesday that the attack was "an assassination attempt... pure and simple".

"I have been under threat of Sikh militants for a long time since Operation Bluestar... There have been previous attempts."

The general said that he was attacked while returning to his hotel in the Oxford Circus area of London from a dinner date with his wife when they were approached by four bearded men wearing black clothes and black jackets.

While one held his wife to the ground, two of the other three also tried to push him onto the ground while the other pulled out a dagger.

"I didn't give in easily, I put up a strong struggle," the general said. "He knifed me in the back and slashed my neck with the knife.

"A few passer-bys arrived... and [the attackers] got frightened and ran away. It was not a robbery attempt. They didn't take my wife's handbag or my wallet. It was a hate crime... This was their way of taking revenge for what happened in Operation Bluestar in 1984."

No arrests have been made and police are keeping an open mind regarding a possible motive for the attack. They say they want to speak to people who helped the general and his wife at the scene following the attack.

The 1984 raid on Golden Temple was a part of the government's effort to crush Sikh militancy in India.

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was subsequently assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in what was seen as a revenge attack.
