The US state department has condemned a Pakistani minister's offer of $100,000 (£61,600) for the death of the American maker of an anti-Islam film.
It said the step was "inflammatory and inappropriate".
Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour made the offer after a wave of protests against the film across Pakistan and the wider Muslim world.
Dozens have died in clashes between police and protesters in Pakistan and countries such as Tunisia and Sudan.
Sunday saw a fresh round of protests over the film in Pakistan, Nigeria, Greece and Turkey.
Most passed off peacefully, but in the Greek capital Athens, riot police and demonstrators clashed. Six people were arrested.
A state department official told the BBC: "The president and secretary of state have both said the video at the core of this is offensive, disgusting, and reprehensible - but that is no justification for violence, and it is important for responsible leaders to stand up and speak out against violence.
"Therefore we find Mr Bilour's announcement is inflammatory and inappropriate. We note that the prime minister's office has dissociated itself from his comments."
In hiding
The exact origins of Innocence of Muslims, the low-budget film that has prompted the unrest, are unclear.
The alleged producer of the trailer of the film, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, is in hiding.
Anti-US sentiment grew after a trailer for the film dubbed into Arabic was released on YouTube earlier this month.
US citizens have been urged not to travel to Pakistan, and the US embassy has paid for adverts on Pakistani TV showing President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemning the film.
Although US targets have borne the brunt of protests against the film, anti-Western sentiment has been stoked further by caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published this week in the satirical French magazine, Charlie Hebdo.
France shut embassies and other missions in about 20 countries across the Muslim world on Friday.
An 18-year-old man who threatened the magazine's editors on Facebook has been charged with terrorism-related activity following his arrest in the southern French city of Toulon, a judicial source told AFP news agency on Sunday.

THE man who allegedly organised Sydney's Muslim riots has been arrested and charged with inciting violence.
The 20-year-old was arrested at a business at Ingleburn, in Sydney's southwest, this afternoon.
He was charged with recruiting persons to engage in criminal activity and printing or publishing to incite, urge or aid the commission of a crime.

It's alleged he used social networking sites and mobile phone text messages to organise last Saturday's CBD demonstration, which led to a series of violent clashes with police.
Hundreds more police to patrol Sydney streets
He was granted strict conditional bail to appear in Penrith Local Court on October 15.
A second man, aged 21, was arrested in The Rocks, central Sydney, this afternoon on suspicion of inciting and promoting the violence through social networking websites.
He was being interviewed by detectives.
It comes as police ramp up their presence in Sydney's CBD this weekend over fears of a repeat of the violence.

Police in Oak Creek, Wis., on Monday released chilling dash-cam video taken during the effort to apprehend shooter Wade Michael Page at a local Sikh Temple on Aug. 5, after a rampage that left six worshippers dead.
The video and radio messages show that the police response was "textbook" quality, said Oak Creek police Chief John Edwards at a briefing where the videos were shown. The officers "took care of the situation very quickly, and ended it," Edwards said.
Page also died, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot after being hit by a police bullet.
The first video is taken from the squad car of Lt. Brian Murphy, who arrives two to three minutes after the first 911 call, and comes across victims in the parking lot outside the temple. By radio, he calls in the victims and says he does not see a shooter. As he heads to his car for protective gear, the shooter emerges from the temple and begins firing at him, prompting Murphy to dive behind some parked cars.
On the video, the shooter, identified as Page, begins moving one direction, and then reverses and circles around Murphy from behind.
"He moves with deliberateness" as he closes in on Murphy, Edwards said. "There’s no question in my mind that he intended to kill him."
The arrival of officer Sam Lenda minutes later, which is documented in a second dash-cam video, appears to distract the shooter, who begins walking toward Lenda’s squad car. Lenda said he saw the gunman reload or check his ammunition and then begin walking toward him.
Lenda takes cover behind his opened car door and begins shouting at Page to drop the gun. Page then begins shooting at Lenda, hitting the headrest on the car's driver's side.
He was marching in an aggressive manner," while continuing to fire, Lenda said at the briefing. After running through what he described as a "checklist" that was drilled in through years of training, Lenda returned fire.
"It was time to use deadly force," he said, "which is what I proceeded to do at that time."
Ballistics showed that Lenda’s bullet hit Page, bringing him down, said Edwards. But ballistics also suggested that the deadly shot was self-inflicted — a shot to the head that matched the 9 mm ammunition used by Page.
It was only after Page was neutralized that Lenda and other officers could attend to Murphy, who, it turned out had been shot more than a dozen times, according to Edwards.
Murphy was recently discharged from the hospital and is at home continuing his recovery.
"There’s no question in my mind that Lt. Murphy prevented the gunman from taking more lives," said Lenda.
Lenda agreed that his own arrival likely saved Murphy’s life, but added, "I’m just an officer who did my job."
Some aspects of the shooting, including Page's motive, remain under investigation.
Page was a former member of the U.S. army with close ties to neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups, according to reports that emerged shortly after the shooting. One theory is that the rampage was a hate crime aimed at Sikhs, a religion practices mainly by natives of India, or intended for Muslims, who are often confused with Sikhs.

Memorials are due to be held in the US to mark the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
In New York, relatives will read out the names of those killed when hijacked jets were crashed at the World Trade Center, Washington and Pennsylvania.
President Obama is due to attend a ceremony at the Pentagon and Vice-President Joe Biden is expected to speak at Shanksville.
For the first time, politicians will not address the ceremony in New York.
The National September 11 Memorial and Museum announced in July that this year's ceremony at Ground Zero would include only relatives reading victims' names.
Memorial President Joe Daniels said that, in an election year, it was "honouring the victims and their families in a way free of politics".
Charles Wolf, whose wife Katherine was killed at the World Trade Center, said the absence of elected officials would make the event more intimate for the families.

McDonald’s will open its first ever vegetarian restaurant near the Golden Temple in Amritsar. They plan on opening a secondary location at Katra near the Vaishno Devi shrine.
US fast food giant McDonald's, famed for its beef-based Big Mac burgers, on Tuesday said it will open its first ever vegetarian-only restaurant in the world in India next year.
The world's second-biggest restaurant chain after Subway already tailors its menus to suit local tastes -- which in India means no beef to avoid offending Hindus and no pork to cater for Muslim requirements.
It will open its first vegetarian outlet in the middle of next year near the Golden Temple in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in northern India, where religious authorities forbid consumption of meat at the shrine.
"It will be the first time we have opened a vegetarian restaurant in the world," a spokesman for McDonald's in northern India, Rajesh Kumar Maini, told AFP.
After the opening in Amritsar, the US chain plans to launch another vegetarian outlet at Katra near the Vaishno Devi cave shrine in Indian Kashmir -- a revered Hindu pilgrimage site that draws hundreds of thousands of worshippers a year.
It sees the potential for many more vegetarian restaurants across the country.
McDonald's in India already has a menu that is 50 percent vegetarian.
Its McAloo Tikki burger at 28 rupees or 50 cents -- which uses a spicy fried potato-based patty -- is the top seller, accounting for a quarter of total sales.
Among the chicken-only meat offerings, the Maharaja Mac is also a favorite.
Currently India, with its population of 1.2 billion, is still a "very small market for McDonald's", said Maini.
"We have just 271 restaurants in India and across the world we have nearly 33,000," Maini said.
The chain serves half a million customers a day in India, out of 50 million people it serves daily in over 100 countries.
"When you look at the potential of the country, it's one of the top priority countries and we're laying the groundwork for capturing the market," said Maini.
"We plan to nearly double the number of outlets to 500 plus within the next three years," he said.
McDonald's realized soon after it entered the country that it had to rework its international menu to Indian tastes.
"The reasons were very compelling -- cow slaughter is not allowed because of religious reasons and we couldn't do pork either," Maini explained.
Hindus, who account for 80 percent of India's population, regard cows as sacred. For Muslims, the consumption of pork is prohibited in the Koran.
"It was the whole idea of going local and creating flavors that would create acceptance for us," Maini said. "We had to look at the whole market innovatively and we realized only chicken-based and vegetarian food would work."
McDonald's is not alone in "Indianizing" its offerings. Domino's Pizza, another leading fast food chain in India, has created pizzas with extra spicy toppings.
