From left, Twitter Vice-President International Katie Stanton and Google employees Ujjwal Singh and Steve Crossan pose for a portrait at Google headquarters in Mountain View , Calif.,

Even before his first day on the job at Google, Ujjwal Singh was trying to figure out how to use his passion for the spoken word and the company's technological prowess to help Egyptians bypass government efforts to muzzle the massive protests there.

Ujjwal Singh, 38, helped start an online service that lets fans share voice messages with the likes of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Google bought the startup Jan. 25, and a Google product team leader trying to figure out a way around Egypt's recent Internet blackout asked Singh for help before he reported to work.
A weekend of brainstorming and programming later, Speak2Tweet was born - a service that lets people call a phone number and leave a message, then posts a link to the message to Twitter.

It allowed Egyptians to communicate even as the regime of President Hosni Mubarak cut Internet and cell phone services for days, trying to squelch furious protests in the streets of Cairo demanding an end to his three decades of authoritarian rule.
By the time Singh started his job Monday, his service was already part of the uprising.

Almost 2,900 spoken tweets had been posted as of Friday afternoon on the Twitter account (at) speak2tweet. Some of the heaviest volume came after access to both Twitter and the Internet was restored in Egypt earlier this week. The alternative method of tweeting has turned into a forum for longer-form expression because the voice recordings aren't confined to Twitter's 140-character limit.

Even so, it provided a vital link between Egypt and the rest of the world, says Cynthia Wong, director of the Center for Democracy & Technology's Project on Global Internet Freedom. As the word of the service spreads, York expects it to attract more voice messages because only about one-fourth of Egypt's population has Internet access.

Google is very involved with the Egyptian revolution. Just yesterday, I had seen a major American newspaper report that a Google employee was giving speeches to organize the crowds.

Good article, Kudrat.

China has an Internet Kill Switch, a firewall-type access to block internet for the entire country. And they abuse that power.

Politics is funny. Here you have Google interfering with and helping the Egyptian people create a revolution of sorts. What IRKs me is, the same people that are against wiki-leaks are in favor of this type of rebellion. People like to say "go Google" and "go Twitter," but why is it their business to change the political power in that country?

The the second in charge, is a military nut-case with a history of allowing torture in their prison system and being in bed they the top military officials in the region. - kerfufle

I wondering wonder what Omar Sulieman's view is on Israel... is he "in line" with the united states? Or will this nut-case pull the trigger? Hosni Mubarak..., not sure what he did to be forced to resign... but the Israeli's seem to be sweating bullets at the news of a revolution.

My guess is that the United States needs a puppet in power who is willing to do what he is told. They already have the leaders of Google and Twitter bent over and strapped to the table.

Well, My sole purpose of post was to enlighten Indian's Role n brain at international level.

@ Kerfufleji.. I think, You might be right because Sulieman  is CIA's man.. So If Power would shift from Mubarak to Sulieman but It wont help Egyptians. Well, According to recent updates, Mubarak has announced that he is handing powers to VP Sileman. But I think that is just announcement nothing for implementation..

But, My opinion is if Google, Facebook and tweets are helping protesters to raise their voice , there is noting wrong in that...

Well he didn't say he's handing over his powers just yet. They are still doing it the democratic way, which i think is the right way to do it. I think Mubarak and Suleiman both were very profesional about the way they handle the "crisis".

Google and the rest are just gangsters unleashed or hired to fuel this anger, in a disguise. If the president of the Eygpt doesn't want them to help spread the propaganda like they are doing then he should have the authority to stop them.

This is no different than what the Americans are doing with Julian Assange. Only difference here is that Julian is Google and the American government is Hosni Mubarak.

I think what happened today was best for Egypt, now they go to elections and official chose which crazy they want to run the country. All I know is that with Guantanamo gone... the American Government is looking for a new parking lot  :pagel:.

There is something wrong with that. Google's obligation is to provide a search engine and other applications that the people can use. Not to go into other countries to organize riots and force feed their own beliefs to the public... thats up to its people. We all know everything on Google is filtered so the Egyptians only see one side of the story. Google should just stick to business and bud out.

Well, What he didn't do yesterday , he did today so Hosani Mubarak finally resigned.. and this has ended 30 years old autocratic rule.. And Why r you after US. Whatever, wherever n whoso ever is doing is doing but other people come up with only one opinion that US is responsible even u dont have any base for your statement.

If Egyptian are not happy with their ruler than whats problem with US there??

and Waiting for election means waiting for another Autocratic Government..

Well, For Google i would say, Google is not just search engine now they are more responsible for people's awareness whatever is happening around the world therefore, if they are trying to help common people of Egypt then why common people of other countries have problem with this?

And when we are sitting in one of the affluent countries then we cant understand problem of other country which is even suffering for its basic needs.. at that time Shouldn't we support them?

hun sare answers davo kerfufleji.. :P

I'm just not a fan of Western politics. I just think there is another motive behind this. Peaceful protests? Only 18 days? This guy was suppose to be badass.

Are the Egyptians not happy with their ruler or are the Americans not happy with Egypt's ruler? The first thing I don't understand is why did they took 30 year realize they were oppressed. Second thing... if he is such an intolerant leader, how is it that ONLY 18 days were enough to take out such a tyrannical Prime Minister. I would have been more convinced if there was more violence and blood to be honest.

We'll see if the military actually lets there be an election. How often does a military let go of its power so soon? To me this looks like a Pakistan situation.

One thing to provide the service, only if it was fare and not bias. Even the news channels here let me down, regular people don't stand a chance to make an impartial decision.

You try to organize a public protest against the united states government in mass, and see how affluent the country is.

And I'm not saying, not to support them. I'm say, look at who is actually causing the "revolution." Was it the people of Egypt or is some outside power that may not have the best interests of the Egyptian's in mind. To be honest, the American's cause revolutions all over the place. They installed the current regime in Iran, they were responsible for the Military occupation in Pakistan, they attempted to pull this very same move in Venezuela against Hugo Chavez who is actually still in power. They are also responsible for Afghanistan's current leader Karzi. In Bangladesh the British Government was responsible for training the death squads that killed innocent people, just so the current government at the time would be over thrown.

My point wasn't to say, "don't support" the revolution. It was to say, "don't jump on the bandwagon". The Egyptians didn't want the revolution, someone else did. If the Egyptians wanted it. They would have attempted this 20 years ago. Hunne kyon una nu chete aya? And do you really think an 18 day "peaceful" protest was enough? Without any base, and any opposition parties, how long will it take for the military to be satisfied with the situation in order for them to allow fare elections? Or do we have the same red army situation as Thailand has now?

Tusi daso hun Kudrat-ji.

So What do you think whats motive behind this revolution? And do u think if most of this revolution was peaceful then its not good?? Shouldn't be happy that now We can fight for our rights peacefully too??
Well for information..In This peaceful revolution , estimates that 300 people were killed and more than 3,000 were injured over the past few days that anger against the dictator invaded the streets

and Here there r many things to know about History of Egypt Revolution, We cant come up with our conclusion without knowing whole situation.. so this was not 16 days revolt, this is what u saw on front.. Tunisia's revolution acted as catalyst for this one and Jan 25, 2010 was chosen by Egypt evolutionary group named 6th April Youth movement and this was not formed in that 16 days they have been working from last few years.

n highlighted statement shows really not so good thinking of young generations opinion for peaceful resolutions..

well, I would like comment over affluence of US of America and in comparison to Middle East too but later :P for now tell me who is jumping in bandwagon becoz u have few formed few facts from past so now u are trying to blame US for this too. But if we try to know about Mubarak's government history, both have supported each other and this revolution n anger was kind of surprise for US but unfortunately they have to support common people's interest and show their good side at international level.

hun dasso Kefufle-ji :P

p.s if India took 100 years to get over from British rule then Why not 30 years for Egypt?

I wanted to make a short post, so I'll just say this:

Google did not force or encourage the employee. It just happened to be that the employee worked for google. He could have just as well worked for any other company. But this is what the media ran with and the story that everybody liked.

Well I don’t know what the motive behind the revolution was, but I don’t think it’s so cut and dry. I did ready that there were deaths but still seems a little low. I just said, it like I did to make it more dramatic. :P Yes. they have lived under emergency laws for 30 years and yes the economy is messed up.  But still, all this gussa all at once? Jan 2010, is only one year ago.

And my whole thing was to say that there are other things in that region that make it valuable. Oil is one reason and the proximity to Israel and the rest of the Middle East is another reason. America also gives Egypt $1.5 billion, but only if they use that money to buy weapons back from the USA (I didn’t know best interests involved guns.)

And for the last point, America has never supported the common people and never will. There are a lot of common people in America that are being left behind. Help them and then move on. My view on America, are very warped. And probably will never change.

Your turn, Kudrat-ji :)

okji challo lets continue.. well first thing don't be so skeptical..all gussa not at once it was kind of planned and Tunisia revolution act as aggravating factor.. n revolutionary groups have been working from long time but becoz of Government was so autocratic, they were always suppressed..

baki u r stuck at one point only, that America is always wrong dont be so rigid, try to be more flexible and look at bigger picture.. :P
about monetary aid to Egypt, that has been given to Egypt to defend against foreign assault and there is no compulsion to buy weapons back from US only . and if we see at other side, If everything was going right and US was supporting Mubarak's dictatorship then How US could be related to this revolution?

Your turn Kerfufle-ji
