Sehrabandi

This is a ceremony held for the groom, just before the baraat (grooms party) sets out for the bride's place. As per Sikh tradition, the groom must wear a turban, sehra (a veil of flowers or pearls) and carry a sword. An elder of the family usually ties the sehra on the grooms forehead and the groom's sister adorns his turban with a kalgi (head ornament). He is accompanied by a sarbala (an unmarried younger brother or friend to 'protect' him). It is said that the tying of sehra confers the status of Vishnu (the creator) on the groom. The baraat then sets out for the gurudwara.

Baraat

The term baraat is also used to describe the procession that accompanies the groom on his wedding day. The groom travels to his bride’s home / wedding venue on a magnificently decorated horse, accompanied by family and friends. The baraat is headed by a display of vigorous bhangra dancing  by the groom's relatives and friends.

Milni

The baraat finally reaches the milni or the meeting point. The baraat is welcomed at the gate by the members of the bride's family and relatives. Then the Milni Ceremony takes place. The respective male relatives from the groom's family hug their counterparts from the bride's family and exchange flower garlands. The groom disembarks his horse (the brides mother offers a helping hand). The ceremony concluded with a ardas (prayer).

Jaimala

The groom is taken to a decorated raised platform. The bride makes an entry accompanied by her friends. She is taken to the platform where the groom is standing. Then the bride and the groom exchange flower garlands. Often this ceremony has its lighter moments. As the bride approaches, garland in hand, to place it around the groom's neck, his friends lift him up from the ground and hold him in mid-air, yelling to the bride to place the garland around the neck of the groom. If he bows his head to wear the garland, they insist that he will be bowing to her will for the rest of his life. Meanwhile the bride's sisters and friends try to ensure that the groom bends his head. All this happens in good humor.

Anand Karaj

Anand Karaj is the name given to the  actual Sikh wedding ceremony, literally translated as "Blissful Union". Sikhs regard marriage as a sacred bond of mutual dependence between a man and a woman. A true partnership in marriage is made between those who are united in spirit as well as in mind and body. Marriage is regarded as a strong bond between the bride and groom and the relatives of both families.

Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs wrote the Laava, a formula for a successful marriage. These four Shabads (stanzas), describe the sacred journey of the soul through this world to the final destination, the merging with the infinite. If one follows this sacred path and applies it properly to the institution of marriage, it should results in happiness and fulfillment – Anand (Bliss).

Based on a concept depicted in the Laava, the Sikh marriage is not merely a physical and legal contract but is a fusion of the souls; a holy union between two souls, where physically they appear as two individual bodies but in fact are united as one. "Ek Jot Doe Murti" meaning "one spirit in two bodies".

The Sikh religious wedding ceremony almost always takes place in a Gurudwara, the Sikh place of worship. The ceremony is held in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture and the Sadh Sangat, the holy congregation.

The Laava, or four stanzas, are read and then sung during the ceremony to formalize and sanctify the marriage as the bride and groom walk around the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

 Juti Chupai

Through the wedding ceremonies the girls from the bride's side look for an opportunity to steal the groom's shoes and hide them. Meanwhile the boys from the groom's side try their best not to let the girls succeed in stealing the groom's shoes. Usually the shoes are stolen when the groom takes them off before sitting down in front of the Guru Granth Sahib for the Anand Karaj. If (which is more often than not) the girls succeed, they return the shoes only when the groom gives them  a good amount of money.

Doli Muklava

Once the wedding is over , the baraat gets ready to leave with the bride. As the bride gets ready to leave her parent's home forever, the scene gets very emotional with bidai songs and tearful farewells. The change of residence of the bride is called muklava. The bride usually leaves for her husband's house in a decorated palanquin (doli) carried by her brothers.

Muskaan, some of the above customs, can you find out why they're done? Like jutti lakoning, surma paaying...

What's that called when the groom brings the bride home his mom does the whole dudh wali gadbi pheriing around their heads and drinking it?

hmmm... bahut rasma hundiya ne... It will take time to write about all of them..

Lets start with questions first..

1. Pehla question aa Sehra kyu lagayunde ne (Sehra Bandi).. mainly Sehra is to hide face of Bridegroom (Prince Charming).. taaki kise  evil spirit di nazar na lagge.. because  bridegrrom is very special on that day and looking stunning in his best outfits.. so sare ohde pariwar wale ohnu bure lokan di nazar toh bachayuna chahunde ne..

In addition to this.. these days Bridegroom wears Kalgi too.. Kalgi da significance aa ke oh King like feel kare teh apni Queen nu vyah ke leke awe.. But u cant wear in front of Guru Granth sahibji at the time of Lawan.

2. Paani Warna.. Jado bride pehli war sohre ghar enter hundi aa tah es di sab toh jyada khushi Sass nu hundi aa so oh inni khushi vich apni noohrani diyan blawan lendi aa teh os garwi de paani nu aap pee lendi aa.. jise da significance aa ke ayun wali harek problem ya fer koyee v buri nazar da asar newly weded couple teh na howe bhawe Menu (Sass) nu ho jawe..
par duriing this ritual, ih munde da farz bannda ke oh apni mom nu oh pani peen toh roke becoz he cares for his mother.

Baki these rituals are mainly to show  love for each other in the family..
I will write more later.. :)
