News Khabran / Beer In Moderation Benefits Health
« on: November 23, 2011, 07:12:24 PM »
Moderate and regular consumption of beer, like wine, can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, Italian researchers say.
The study conducted by Research Laboratories at the Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura "Giovanni Paolo II", in Campobasso, Italy, confirmed what was already known about wine: a moderate consumption (approximately two glasses per day for men and one for women) can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, up to 31 per cent less when comparing to non drinkers.
What this research adds are new data on beer. For the first time, in fact, evidence about dose-dependent effect is shown for this beverage. Maximum protection is observed, for a beer containing 5 percent of alcohol, with a consumption of slightly more than an English pint a day. "In our research we considered wine and beer separately: you first observe a reduction in cardiovascular risk with low to moderate drinking," explained Simona Costanzo, first author of the study.
"Then, with an increasing consumption, you can see that the advantage disappears, until the risk gets higher. The interesting part of our research is that, among the studies selected for this meta-analysis, there were 12 in which wine and beer consumption could be compared directly. Using these data we were able to observe that the risk curves for the two beverages are closely overlapping," she stated. But beer as well as wine, drinkers, should be cautious before toasting too much at these results.
Augusto Di Castelnuovo, head of the Statistic Unit of Research Laboratories and a pioneer in alcohol epidemiological studies pointed out, "What we are talking about is moderate and regular drinking. I think we will never stress enough this concept." "Wine or beer are part of a lifestyle. One glass can pair with healthy foods, eaten at proper time, maybe together with family of friends. There is no place for binge drinking or any other form of heavy consumption," he added. The study has been just published online by the European Journal of Epidemiology.

News Khabran / Spain Top Fifa Rankings, England Up To No.5
« on: November 23, 2011, 07:09:38 PM »
World and European champion Spain stayed atop FIFA`s monthly world rankings on Wednesday, despite losing a friendly to England which climbed two places to No. 5.
The Netherlands remained second but third-placed Germany narrowed the gap after winning 3-0 in a friendly between the sides. South American champion Uruguay closed on the top three, beating Chile in 2014 World Cup qualifying and No. 9 Italy in a friendly to remain unbeaten in 13 matches.
England was helped by its friendly wins against Spain and No. 18 Sweden to climb above sixth-placed Brazil, which gained fewer ranking points beating Egypt and Gabon. Portugal and Croatia won 2012 European Championship playoffs and rose to seventh and eighth respectively.
Ivory Coast led African teams at No. 16 and 19th-placed Japan was the best Asian team. Mexico rose two to No. 20 and headed CONCACAF members. Oceania`s best, New Zealand, did not play last month and dropped 14 places to No. 119. It will begin World Cup qualification next June. The biggest risers were the Czech Republic, up 14 places to No. 33, and Ecuador, which climbed 10 to No. 42.
Three teams reached their highest position since the rankings started in 1993: Venezuela (No. 39), Cape Verde (No. 57) and Antigua and Barbuda (No. 83). Qatar, the 2022 World Cup host, dropped three places to No. 95 despite being unbeaten in three matches, including two 2014 qualifiers. The rankings weigh all international matches over a rolling four-year cycle. FIFA took account of 131 matches in the past month, including 72 World Cup qualifiers.

News Khabran / Badal Bahus Slug It Out In Gidderbaha
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:11:36 AM »
As the battle of Gidderbaha picks up momentum, it is now the turn of Badal bahus or the darani-jethani to woo the voters. If Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal’s wife Harsimrat Kaur was gauging the voters mood with her sangat darshan, People’s Party of Punjab chief Manpreet Badal’s wife Veenu Badal was busy touring the constituency that her husband has represented for four times and each time winning with a bigger margin.
It is from village Bhalaiana that Harsimrat, a Lok Sabha member from Bathinda, began her sangat darshan programmes on Tuesday. Dressed in a pink suit and trendy sport shoes, she steers away from mentioning Manpreet Badal in public and only fleetingly touches on the issue of division in the family. “I have come here with folded hands to have darshan of the people who have accorded so much respect to the Badal family,” she tells the gathering.
But once back in the comforts of her SUV, she lets her guard fall. “Who is Manpreet Badal? You (media) have created him and now are over-estimating his chances in the Assembly polls. Just remove the name Badal from Manpreet and no one in Punjab will even recognise him,” she says. Over the course of 10 km, her next stop for sangat darshan, the tirade continues. “The very foundation of Manpreet and his party stands on lies which we have duly exposed.
He says that Punjab was getting a waiver from the Centre. I raised the question in the Lok Sabha and it is on record that there was never a waiver. Then he left the party claiming that we did not agree to his idea of doing away with sops for poor and subsidies. His Common Minimum Programme reeks of populism. People of Punjab can look through his lies.” But when it comes to Manpreet’s wife Veenu, who is campaigning near 20 km away, Harsimrat dismisses with a shrug. “Is she really here? Let her be. Everyone has the right to be in the constituency.”
Away from the strappings of Harsimrat’s paraphernalia, dressed in an inky blue kurta teamed with white salwar and duppata, Veenu alights from her SUV and walks in to the party office. There are no bodyguards, no government officials at her beck and call. She is just back from what she says a “very successful” PPP rally in Muktsar. A quick wash and she is ready. “She (Harsimart Badal) has landed in Gidderbaha after almost two decades. I have always been here. I have not only campaigned for Manpreet but also for Sukhbir. My children are almost as old as the day we got this constituency some 16 years back. You (media) are kind of noticing me now but I have always been here.”
But this is the first time she is not campaigning for SAD (B) and Veenu says it is a “lot easier” to do it for PPP. “The burden of having to campaign for a party with which you did not agree completely has been removed.” Veenu is also not perturbed by Harsimrat’s presence. “She is here because of me. And honestly speaking if you ask me about Harsimrat and Sukhbir, then all I can say is that I know nothing. We as a family were close to tayaji (Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal). My son Arjun used to call him from Doon School. And of course my father-in-law used to be very close to his brother. Other than him, we never shared any bonding with other members of the family.” Family talk over, she focuses on Manpreet’s agenda.
“He is not doing all this just to become a chief minister. He is a catalyst of change. No one can treat Punjab like their fiefdom. If tomorrow Manpreet starts treating Punjab for his own purposes even he will lose. If we do not change the fate of Punjab now, provide education to our children, give them good jobs, there will be rioting on the streets.” Even as she explains her husband’s poll agenda, the party matriarch throws a glance at the walls and is almost apologetic. “I have been telling them to get it painted. We even need some good crockery here but then I have been so busy touring villages that I could not pay much attention to the office.”

News Khabran / Badal Asks Ramoowalia To Rejoin Akali Dal
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:09:03 AM »
Ahead of the state assembly elections slated for early next year, Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal patron Parkash Singh Badal asked former union minister and Lok Bhalai Party (LBP) leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia to rejoin the Akali Dal.
In a letter to the LBP leader, Badal said his (Ramoowalia's) re-joining the Akali Dal would strengthen the party. The LBP, which has been spearheading the cause of Punjabi youth being duped by illegal immigration agents in the name of sending them abroad, has also been highlighting the plight of young brides from Punjab being abandoned by their Non-Resident Indian (NRI) husbands.
Ramoowalia had earlier been part of the Akali Dal but left the party over two decades ago. Elections to the 117-member state assembly are likely to be held February-March next year. While the main contest will be between the Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance and the opposition Congress, the new political outfit, People's Party of Punjab (PPP), floated by Badal's politically estranged nephew and former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal, is likely to make the contest three-cornered in many constituencies.

News Khabran / Rupee@52: Bad For Eco, Good For Some
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:04:19 AM »
A sharp plunge in rupee value to below Rs 52 per US dollar level may be a bad news for the stock markets and the overall economy, but has also brough cheers to certain segments, experts believe.
Stock markets have fallen sharply and concerns are being raised about a slowdown in economic growth momentum in the backdrop of a sharp rupee depreciation, while worries are also mounting about further surge in inflation. However, a weaker rupee could mean good news for the non-resident Indians (NRIs) and others remitting money from abroad to their families back in India, as also for those having invested in overseas mutual funds and the expats working in India with income in foreign currencies like the US dollar and expenses in rupee.
The rupee on Tuesday hit a record low of Rs 52.73 against the US dollar, as investors exited from riskier emerging markets as well as eurozone assets, and made their bet on dollar -- which is seen as a "safe heaven" at times of crisis. Some recovery was seen in the rupee this morning, but it remained above the 52-level and the analysts believe a further drop was still a possibility. The experts say that there are chances of a fall to as low as 55-level, as emerging market currencies are quite vulnerable to the eurozone debt crisis.
Amid a plunge in rupee value, the stock market tanked today with a fall of over 500 points in the benchmark Sensex during the intra-day trade. But weaker rupee turns out to be good for those who depend on remittances from abroad, as the Indian currency has not only slipped against the dollar, but also against most other major currencies like the euro, British pound, Australian dollar and Kuwati dinar. One US dollar gets a little over Rs 52 now, which is nearly 17 per cent more than what it did at the beginning of the year, similarly the British pound brings Rs 81, (up 16 per cent), euro brings Rs 70.19 (up 17.27 per cent) and Australian dollar Rs 50.90 (up 11.30 per cent).
Besides, for those people who are planning a visit to India now, are cheering as they will get good bargain for their home country currencies here. That gives them more spending power in this country than other favorite destinations like Singapore and Thailand. Each Thai bhat now cost Rs 1.66, which is 12.16 per cent higher than the level at the beginning of this year, while the Singapore currency has appreciated 14.88 per cent against to touch Rs 39.96 per dollar. "A weak rupee makes India a cheaper destination...we are getting a lot of bookings from tourists coming into India as this is the peak season," hotel major Starwood India's Managing Director Dilip Puri said.
Besides, a weaker rupee could also lead to rise in gold prices, as investors tend to shift their focus away from riskier assets like stocks to the bullion market in such scenarios, experts said. This would result in gains for the existing gold investors, but adversely affect the consumers. In general, stock market mirrors the rupee movement, but investors in export-focussed sector stocks, like those from the IT space, stand to gain as these companies are primarily exporters of services to the western market. The overseas earnings of these companies are generally expected to grow, as the value of foreign currencies have appreciated.
However, in the IT sector also, only select stocks stand to gain in the current situation, as the overall global economic situation is not quite jubilant and this would impact the order book position of the domestic software firms. "Investors are concerned due to the global economic scenario and the businesses may suffer. Besides, nobody keeps currency open, some amount of hedging is done and dollar denominated expenditure are also there," Kejriwal Research and Investment Services (KRIS) Director Arun Kejriwal said. The investors having put money in overseas securities like international mutual funds could also reap the benefits as as foreign currencies have fluctuated for the better.
"Stock market going up and down is a different situation, but purely looking through a currency perspective. if one has invested in rupee and is reaping the returns in dollars, he is a clear-cut beneficiary," Ashika Stock Brokers Research Head Paras Bothra said. For those individuals who work in India but get paid in the foreign currencies like dollar could also be rejoicing. Commenting on this, Basudev Mukherjee, Managing Director, Indian Staffing Federation, said: "As with any other item that is denominated in foreign currency, dollar denominated salaries are bound by market fluctuations. In the short term, the employees are set to gain from this situation."

KC Chiefs Pounded by New England Patriots 34-3,The Kansas City Chiefs gave backup quarterback Tyler Palko(notes) his first professional start against one of the top teams in the AFC Nov. 21. The Chiefs took a pounding by a score of 34-3 on Monday Night Football against the New England Patriots.

The Chiefs looked great during the first 30 minutes of the game but then imploded on both sides of the ball in the second half. Palko finished the game with a passer rating of 49.9 thanks to three interceptions. Two of them were tipped in the air when Palko's receivers couldn't quite handle the ball thrown to them. He was also sacked three times. Palko was 25-for-38 with 236 yards passing.

His counterpart on the other sideline was much more efficient. Tom Brady(notes) of the Patriots was 15-for-27 and 234 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Chiefs actually had the ball longer than the Patriots by three minutes. Kansas City converted two more third downs. The Chiefs had more yards per rush and only 34 yards of penalties. Yet somehow, Kansas City still managed to score just three points.

The key to this game was how each team responded to what was going on in the field of play. New England took advantage of good field position and turnovers. The Chiefs were unable to the same. After the field goal was good in the first quarter by Kansas City, head coach Todd Haley tried a trick onside kick that failed when the ball hit the leg of a Chiefs player before going 10 yards. Other gimmick plays Haley tried to use throughout the night failed miserably.

There were a few bright spots to the game. Palko had more throwing yards in one game than the injured Matt Cassel(notes) did in five games this year. Kansas City had the lead for a full 10 minutes of playing time before the defense gave up a 52-yard touchdown. Tamba Hali(notes) finally looked like he did last year on an early sack of Brady deep in New England territory. The Chiefs couldn't capitalize on good field position and failed to score on the ensuing drive.

Special teams for the Chiefs were also good as kick returners brought the ball past the 30 yard line repeatedly. The kicking unit was also able to pin the Patriots inside the 15 yard line three times.

It was another frustrating game for Chiefs fans such as myself to watch. At times, it seemed the Chiefs had the momentum in the game. But then the offense got a hold of the ball. Eventually, Brady and the Patriots found holes in the Chiefs defense and exploited them.

Kansas City is now 4-6, a full two games behind the Oakland Raiders. Up next is a game at home against the 7-3 Pittsburgh Steelers. The Chiefs just started the most brutal part of their schedule as they face four division leaders in six games, including the loss at New England.

William Browning is a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs after latching on to the team during the lean years of St. Louis football. Born in the gateway city, he is also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He currently resides in Branson, Mo.
