Tom Brady ties playoff record as New England shreds Tim Tebow and Denver
Broncos 10 Patriots 45 FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – There may have been a time – in the middle of the week, in the hours before kickoff, even early in the second quarter, though that’s a stretch – when it seemed feasible that Tim Tebow and his Denver Broncos could have beaten Tom Brady and his New England Patriots. Talk of karma and religion and all sorts of elements that have little to do with football filled the icy air, and with a week between playoff games, there are hours to kill and story lines to hype. Then this AFC divisional playoff game started. Less than two minutes in, the Patriots were up by a touchdown. Less than six minutes later, they were up by two. Over the final 2 1/2 minutes of a freakishly good first half, they scored two more to go up by 28 points. All that pregame dissection of Tebow’s throwing motion and Tebow’s beliefs and Tebow’s leadership and Tebow’s deficiencies seemed downright silly, because the vastly superior player, Brady, and the clearly superior team, New England, won in a never-in-doubt romp, 45-10, in which Brady tied an NFL playoff record with six touchdown passes. So take a moment to give Tebow his due, put his season to rest, and wonder about his future later. Take several moments, though, to appreciate what Brady did before a Gillette Stadium crowd of 68,756, whose applause was muffled only by ski gloves. He threw five touchdowns in the first half alone, three to superhuman tight end Rob Gronkowski, who hauled in 10 balls for 145 yards. Brady hit on 26 of his 34 throws, including all three he threw on the Patriots’ opening touchdown drive, and all five he threw on the back-breaking final touchdown drive of the first half, which took all of 64 seconds. When his night was done, he had racked up 363 yards, a new franchise postseason record, and the Patriots had scored more points than in any of the other 36 playoff games in their history. More importantly, Brady and the Patriots won their first postseason game since Jan. 20, 2008, the AFC Championship Game against San Diego. Since then, they had been upset in Super Bowl XLII by the New York Giants, lost a home playoff game to Baltimore following the 2009 season, and lost a home playoff game to the New York Jets following the 2010 season. Perhaps they saved it all for Saturday night, when they easily earned the right to host the winner of Sunday’s Baltimore-Houston game for the AFC title. Brady now has more playoff victories with one team, 15, than any quarterback in history. Win next week, and advance to his fifth Super Bowl, and he’ll tie Joe Montana for the most postseason wins of all-time. Tebow’s oddball season – at times inspirational, at times baffling – thus came to an ignominious close. In the third quarter, with the Patriots up 42-7, the Foxborough faithful mockingly chanted his name in sing-song ridicule, “Teeee-bow! Teee-bow!” He had no response. He completed 9 of 26 passes for 136 yards, ran five times for 13 more yards. Other than when Brady made his one slip-up – an interception in New England territory late in the first quarter – Tebow seemed to have no hope of leading the Broncos to the end zone. Through three quarters, he had as many completions as he did sacks – five. When these two teams met Dec. 18, a 41-23 New England win, the Broncos surged to an early lead because New England’s suspect defense, ranked 31st in the lead, couldn’t stop the run. But the Patriots took control Saturday, on both sides of the ball, with a we’ll-try-anything flair. In the previous meeting, the Broncos gained 167 yards rushing – in the first quarter. Saturday, they had XXX for the game. The Patriots even used tight end Aaron Hernandez in the backfield, and on their fourth play from scrimmage, Hernandez took a [ITAL] handoff [end ITAL] and rumbled for 43 yards, and he ended the night as New England’s leading rusher. When it was all but over, Brady even signaled its finality by punting, a development that led to a skirmish on the sideline. Brady calmly walked off. The only other men to throw six touchdown passes in the postseason were Oakland’s Daryle Lomonica against Houston in 1969 and San Francisco’s Steve Young in Super Bowl XXIX, following the 1994 season. Brady had a new accomplishment. But the tradition around here, where three Super Bowl trophies reside, dictates that all those individual storylines don’t matter much. With that, Tom Brady’s season marched on, and Tim Tebow’s season came to a close. 325

News Khabran / Sikhs find a new home in the city« on: January 10, 2012, 04:44:46 PM »
OXFORD’s Sikh community has finally found a building to turn into a permanent home.
They were previously thrown out of a three-bedroom house in Cherwell Drive, Marston, after using it as a temple without permission. In 2010 they were ordered to move after permission was denied to use it as a place of worship. It came after complaints about parking and noise. Now they have been given the opportunity to move into the former Sharp & Howse building in London Road, Headington, which has been empty for two years. Pargan Singh, of Cherwell Drive, said: “We are optimistic about this building becoming a temple. “It is owned by someone in the Sikh community and we have agreed to buy it once the planning application goes through.” Mr Singh belongs to a Sikh group known as Oxford Sri Guru Singh Sabha, which has been going for about 40 years. The shop is on the corner of Northfield Road and Mr Singh has applied to change part of it into a place of worship for up to 35 people. A 10-space car park is also included in the plans. In 2006 the city’s Sikh community moved into 69 Cherwell Drive and then put up an extension which was used as a congregation room without consent for either. Cherwell Drive resident Neil Holdstock said: “The use of 69 Cherwell Drive as a temple caused a huge impact on local residents mainly due to parking and noise. “Locating a temple in a house in the middle of a residential street without the correct planning permission was never going to be received well in such a tight-knit community without proper consultation.” The Sikhs moved out in May last year and have since been using St Nicholas School in Marston for their weekly prayer meetings. Oxford’s nearest Sikh temples are in Banbury, Swindon and Slough. Referring to the new site, Mr Singh said: “It is definitely bigger and better than Cherwell Drive. “It is also more accessible for people who want to use public transport and we aren’t going to cause any problems for the residents. “We are excited about this.” If it becomes a place of worship it will not involve any change to the outward appearance of the building. A date for a decision by Oxford City Council has not yet been set. * City councillors have given permission for the conversion of the garage at 69 Cherwell Drive into a one-bedroom house. The decision, which was made last month, was despite concerns from residents about the effect it would have on neighbouring houses and the lack of parking. 332
News Khabran / 'Sikh guy' brings experience to mayor's job« on: January 10, 2012, 04:43:22 PM »
Moments after his City Council peers chose him to serve as Charlottesville’s next mayor, Satyendra Huja departed briefly from his pragmatic tone to reflect on the larger significance of the occasion.
Nearing his fourth decade in Charlottesville, Satyendra Huja will try to put years of service as an elected official and planner to the task of setting the agenda for a new council that remains split on some development issues. (Photo by Sarah Cramer) “This says a great deal about our community, someone like me becoming mayor. Our community appreciates and embraces diversity and that reflects in our efforts,” Huja said. It wasn’t the “I have a dream” speech, to be sure, but for Huja it was borderline emotive, and he expanded on his comments during an interview later in the week. “I can’t think of a Sikh guy getting elected in many other communities,” Huja said. “There aren’t many Sikhs in Charlottesville… So I obviously didn’t get elected because of my religion. I got elected because I could be of service.” Huja, 70, was born in a part of northern India that is now Pakistan, and immigrated to the U.S. to pursue his education with a mandate from his father to serve the community wherever he landed. After receiving a master’s degree in city planning from Michigan State, he served as the city’s director of planning and community development for three decades. Government has been his career and calling since. “When I first came to the United States, I never thought of staying, but as it turned out it offered me the opportunity to practice what I had learned and to make a difference in some ways,” Huja said. That commitment to service is what spurred fellow council member Kristin Szakos to nominate Huja for mayor. “He did an incredible amount of knocking on doors and making phone calls. He talked to people one on one about what they were interested in and what they cared about and I think he’s committed to continuing that,” Szakos said. “He said in the meeting last night something I don’t know that anyone’s ever said, ‘I’m available 24/7,’ and I can imagine someone calling him on the phone at 3am saying they have a pothole and I think he’d probably answer.” Before the new council was seated on Tuesday, January 3, there had been some speculation that Szakos wanted the job for herself. However, she said she would rather focus her extra energy on her family and a grant-funded partnership she helped to organize aimed at improving school retention in three neighborhoods in the West Main Street corridor. “I’ve certainly looked at the mayorship and I think I could do a good job at it, but for me the timing wasn’t right and I think for him it was,” Szakos said. Two-term mayor Dave Norris said he voted for Huja because of his long track record and his ability to build consensus in the community. “He’s been in town for almost 40 years now, he knows a lot of people and has a lot of connections and that will serve him well,” said Norris. “A lot of the job of mayor isn’t trying to do things on your own but trying to figure out who you can bring together to get things done.” Charlottesville’s mayor is essentially a facilitator with no executive power other than to set the City Council’s agenda and run its meetings. New council member Kathy Galvin said she was impressed by Huja’s willingness to instigate open discussion and elicit the opinions of his colleagues. “I look at the mayor as the chairman of the board, making sure that the agenda is clear and that the agenda reflects everyone’s interests and that all opinions are heard, and that is what I believe Mr. Huja will bring to the table,” Galvin said. During his first meeting, Huja moved the agenda swiftly without rushing speakers. Though he didn’t use the two small hourglasses in front of them, he kept members of the public to their three minutes of time during the open comment period and urged fellow council members to stay on topics detailed on the meeting agenda, which included a review of the new steep slopes ordinance and a discussion of the coming city/county cost share agreement. New councilor Dede Smith has been, along with Norris, a vehement opponent of the recently adopted community water supply plan that will expand the Ragged Mountain Dam. She used the informational discussion to ask about the cost implications of the water supply plan in the cost share agreement. Norris said he and Smith’s position on the water supply plan and the Meadow Creek Parkway was evidence of two mindsets on the new council. “There’s a group in town that’s more populist. That’s concerned about environmental issues, the health of our ecology, that’s more inclined to support social justice,” Norris said. “And then there’s another sort of orientation that’s more inclined to support the need for infrastructure to support growth and development and maybe not as populist in its orientation.” But he added the group would likely agree on many decisions. “You’re not going to see Dede and me against Huja, Kathy and Kristin on every issue. There’s a lot of issues on which we’ll have broad agreement. But certainly on the water issue and on some other issues, there will be disagreement on council and that’s fine,” Norris said. Huja also downplayed the divide. “I think there’s one or two issues on which we disagree, for example the water supply and the Meadow Creek Parkway, but I think most times we’ll agree and we’ll work together as a team—all five of us,” Huja said. “I think we’ll agree more than we disagree.” 333

News Khabran / Punjab, UP, Goa may give us problems on money front: CEC« on: January 08, 2012, 03:42:42 AM »
The Election Commission feels that Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Goa may pose problems on use of money power in the upcoming Assembly elections.
“We feel that Punjab and Uttar Pradesh will give us problems on the money front. And so will Goa, because money plays a big role,” Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi said in an interview, when asked if EC foresees problems in any of the poll-bound states. Already, the Commission's fears are turning true with huge cache of money bags being recovered in states of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. So far, as much as Rs 7.5 crore has been seized from Uttar Pradesh and a similar amount of cash has been recovered from Punjab. The CEC said the Commission will also keep a tab on paid news during polls, besides also on the television channels and newspapers owned by various political parties and account for the expenses incurred on election campaigns for candidates of their respective political party. 338
