by the way eh ta sb jande ne ke eh andh wishwas hai k wart rakhen nal umer lambi hundi hai but  jdo ek ladki ya aurat sara din bhukhi pyasi rehndi hai ta oh andh wishwas nhi its a way of expressing the love towards her life patner jdo insan nu pta lagda hai koi usnu aina pyar krda hai ta obvious es ehsas nal insan di umer ta lambi hundi o aa

I agree with both of you girls, loka ne aaj kal es gal da mazak banaya hoya.

I had 2 Guju friends growing up and I learned from their families that the women of the household do this fasting (vart) for their husband's/life partner/to-be husbands for their long life and prosperity. Ek aurat saara din bhuki piyasi rehndi aa sirf es karke ki odhe significant other di umar odhe toh lambi hove, even if it's by 1 sec. Lakshmi ji (some people treat their wives/women in their life) as Lakshmi, and so Diwali teh Lakshmi ji di pooja kiti jaandi hai, and Diwali toh usually 10 din pehla eh vart hunda hai, tah ki ghar di Lakshmi apne toh pehla apne "ohna" di pooja kare. I do this vart every year, I've been doing it for about 8 years now, I grew up with being very close to my Guju friends so I just started doing it with them every year, when I saw the moon I would break my fast at that time. I don't pray for anyone (as far as husband/life partner) but since I've done it for so long with my friends, I've just continued to do it even though I'm older now lol.

Lol I know what you mean. I love the whole dressing up idea with the mehndi and haar shingaar and the prayers and all the women getting together at the Mandir. It's just an awesome experience year after year! I love all the singing and dancing involved with it too! Lol I feel like a little kid with candy...

Sikhism is probably the only major organised world religion that does not promote fasting except for medical reasons. The Sikh Gurus discourage the devotee from engaging in this ritual as it is considered to "brings no spiritual benefit to the person". The Sikh holy Scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib tell us: "Fasting, daily rituals, and austere self-discipline - those who keep the practice of these, are rewarded with less than a shell."(SGGS page 216). So most Sikhs have never undertaken a fast of any kind.
