.The word sikh means seeker, to seek, to learn, or to teach. In Sikhism, the term Sikh refers to a spiritual seeker or disciple. The Sikh student seeks spiritual knowledge, divine instruction and guidance on the path of enlightenment from their guru, the holy scripture of the Guru Granth Sahib.

A Sikh is defined as one who believes in five essentials:
 •One God
•Ten gurus
•Guru Granth Sahib
•The Gurus' teachings
•Sikh Initiation according to Guru Gobind Singh

A Sikh, according to Article I of the Sikh Rehat Maryada (the Sikh code of conduct), is "any human being who faithfully believes in One Immortal Being; ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh; Guru Granth Sahib; the teachings of the ten Gurus and the baptism bequeathed by the tenth Guru"
