A proper sikh!? What is the supposed to mean?
« on: April 04, 2011, 06:14:14 AM »
Alright, before you guys say anything, please! try and see this from both perspectives and not just the 'punjabi point of view' or 'the sikhism ways'. You can try and help us(both parties benefits) or you don't.

My bf txt me, he said he wants to wear a turban and grow a beard. I could tell, he was trying to be excited to tell me, my reply was "Are you joking?". He guessed that i wasn't too thrilled about it and i knew he was very disappointed. He wanted my support. I just, couldn't comment at the time. I didn't know what to say. So i told him not to rush into it and let's talk about it thoroughly. The thing is, we love each other no doubt, we want both parties to be happy, i love him the way he is right now and i don't want him to change. I know what you guys are going to say, if i love him truly, i shouldn't mind him wearing a turban and growing a beard. It's just, this is so much to take in, in 1 day. And oh god, i can't picture it in my mind. I told him there are punjabi people out there that don't wear turbans or have beards and it doesn't make them less of a sikh. He said he wants to be a "proper sikh". Is there such thing? Does it make him less of a sikh because he doesn't wear a turban? And yes truth to be told, of course i want to convince him, he's fine the way he is but in order for me to do this, i need you guys to help me. I don't know much about sikhism.

And another thing, i don't have anything against turbans. This is just all new to me and i don't know how he looks in it. This isn't about looks either. I just want him to be him. But i don't want him to have a beard, his soul patch is awesome!

This is a religious thing i know, but oh man, i don't know eh.

:waitin:  Really you're not helping the situation. Not that he is either. He wants to go ahead with it. I said i'd support him, but really a part of me is so against it. But at the end of the day, it's his decision. So we're just going to see how things are going to go from now on.

Daahhhh ppl ... stop saying that without a turban a person is not a sikh .. that is so not true. Sikhism to me is not about turban and beard ... it is the way you lead your life ... follow the values from Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji ... if someone does that then he/she has the right to be proud and be called a Sikh.

Elle, like you said, it is his personal choice .. there is never a right or wrong standpoint on this. If he would like to .. then Kudos ... great actually! because its very difficult to follow these traditional stuff (I myself am not able to). BUT I want to tell you that a person who cuts his hair is NOT an improper sikh. He can be as much of a sikh as any other person.

I would not even see this issue from the religious point of view because it would never lead you anywhere. Everyone has his/her own ideology of living. But change is the law of nature. If your boy friend can see himself as a better person by adopting Sikhism in his life, there would certainly be a great motive behind it. You should not discourage him by giving priority to your choice. May be, you are used to see him the way he looks with the hair cut. But ain't you giving priority to looks rather than love. In true love you ultimately end up respecting the other half's opinions and you will eventually get used to his new look too. It could seem awkward in the beginning but consider this : what if he goes by what you want him to do and doesn't adopt Sikhism. You'll be happy for a little while but then you also might have to live with a guilt in your heart for hindering him from doing what he really wanted to do. I would say, sit down and talk about it with him but don't impose your will on him. In the end, ends will justify the means, its just a matter of time !  I am sorry if I said too much, just felt like sharing my feelings on this.

I don't think this issue is at all related to Sikhism.. that is just understanding of this couple.. How do they wanna see each other.. and here this guy is more of influenced by Turban fashion not by Sikhism... :pagel:

Rest, I agree with Nek Insaan, Turban is part of Sikh Reht ( Code of Conduct).. but the thing is even if you are turbaned but not following principles and values given by Guruji then its of not any use either.

And Turban gives you courage to be  Proper Sikh which could be distinguished among millions.. but this doesn't mean if you are not turbaned you are not Sikh.. this is mainly how are you following Guruji's teaching if you r doing that this means you are on the right way to Sikhism and one day u will reach there and then you would be definitely wearing turban too..

I am quite suprised at your post but thats your opinion and I dont have to agree with that.

titlee ji even i am quite surprised at ur post saying rahit as traditional stuff which is hard to follow.
and ur being ok with it...
i know it feels bad but if you are not following the rehit u have no right to call ur self as sikh..
as clear as that..
this is not only my opinion but a well known fact...
rest i cannot force you to think like that.....
i humbly request you if you are not following the rehit please dont discourage other people also...
and as far as teachings are concerned ... rehit is also part of those teachings...

and khusi kaur ji i agree with you on the point that with the rehit you have to follow all the values given by guruji
to be called as sikh..
but rahit is the first step in this process. and you cannot skip it just like that.....
also people how can you forget that our gurus have sacrifised their lives to keep this identity..
you are in a way forgetting their sacrifise......
never expected this from you guys.....

waheguru ji ka khalsa
waheguru ji ke fateh

I'm not, but you have to realise that me and him are together and i've got a say on this as well. I just wanted him to carefully think about it before doing anything.

Daahhhh ppl ... stop saying that without a turban a person is not a sikh .. that is so not true. I 2nd! this. Exactly. He is sikh! but you don't have to FEEL the NEED to look like 1. I have a question, does it say in sikhism that it's a MUST that you follow all the 5 k's to be a proper sikh? Evidence to support somewhere, anywhere?

I would not even see this issue from the religious point of view because it would never lead you anywhere. Everyone has his/her own ideology of living. But change is the law of nature. I'm not discouraging him! but nor am i encouraging him. Like i said, look at it from both perspectives, not just what you think is "right" or how it should be. In fact, i'm supporting him if he strongly wants to go ahead even if i'm not happy with it. But he hates seeing me like this. So basically, i'm just asking, how can we make this work.

lol

I prefer him just being himself where he doesn't feel the need to change anything to be proper.

Wow this is so depressing.
