:rabb: :rabb: was born on 23 July 1936, village Bara Pind Lohtian, Shakargarh Tehsil, (now in Punjab province, Pakistan), to Pandit Krishan Gopal, village tehsildar in the revenue department, and Shanti Devi, a housewife. His family moved to Batala Gurdaspur district after partition of India, where his father continued his work as a patwari and young Shiv received his primary education . He completed his matriculation in 1953, from Punjab University[disambiguation needed], and enrolled in the F.Sc. program at Baring Union Christian College, Batala, though before completing his degree he moved to S.N. College, Qadian, where he joined the Arts program more suited to his persona, though he left that too in the second year. Thereafter he joined a school at Baijnath, Himachal Pradesh to do a diploma in Civil Engineering, here again he left it in the middle . Next he studied for sometime at Govt. Ripudaman College, Nabha. He fell in love with the daughter of the noted Punjabi writer Gurbaksh Singh Preetlari who was married off to a UK citizen because of caste differences between the two.He remained unlucky in love, and bereavement for love loss reflected intensely in his poetry. Later in life, his father got a job as patwari at Qadian, it was during this period, that he produced some of his best work. His first anthology of poems was published in 1960, titled Piran da Paraga (The Scarf of Sorrows), which became an instant success. In 1965, he became the youngest recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967, for his magnum opus, a verse play Loona (1965). His poetry recitations, and singing his own verse, made him and his work even more popular amongst the masses. In early 1967, he got married, and in 1968, he shifted to Chandigarh, where he joined the State Bank of India, as a PRO. In the following years, bad health plagued him, though he continued to write prolifically. His writings have always been open about his pronounced death wish, and on 7 May 1973, he died at his residence of father-in-law, at Kirri Mangyal, Pathankot, due to of liver cirrhosis as a result of chronic alcoholism, all of 36 years.

waris shah history
« Reply #2 on: November 16, 2010, 05:46:02 AM »
Waris Shah was born in Jandiala Sher Khan, Punjab into a reputed Syed family who claimed descent from prophet Muhammad. His father's name was Gulshar Shah. Waris Shah acknowledged himself as a disciple of Pir Makhdum of Kasur. Waris Shah's parents are said to have died when he was young, and he probably received his education at the shrine of his preceptor. After completing his education in Kasur, he moved to Malka Hans, a village twelve kilometers north of Pakpattan. Here he resided in a small room, adjacent to a historic mosque, now called Mosque Waris Shah. His mausoleum is a place of pilgrimage today, especially for those in love.....................................Waris Shah is also called Shakespeare of the Punjabi language because of his great poetic love story, Heer Ranjha. Some critics say that through this story of romantic love, he tried to portray the love of man for God (the quintessential subject of Sufi literature).
He was a consummate artiste, deeply learned in Sufi and domestic cultural lore. His verse is a treasure-trove of Punjabi phrases, idioms and sayings. His minute and realistic depiction of each detail of Punjabi life and the political situation in the 18th century, remains unique. Waris Shah also sublimated his own unrequited love for a girl (Bhag Bhari) in writing romance.
Many verses of Waris Shah are widely used in Punjab in a moral context. One of the more popular is
"Waris Shah; Naa adataan jaandiyan ne, Bhavein katiye pora pora ji"
(Waris Shah says: A man never abandons his habits, even if he is hacked to pieces)............................

Birha Da Sultan Shiv Kumar
‌ARJOI

Tu jo sooraj chori keeta
Mera si.
Tu jis ghar vich nhera keeta,
Mera si.

Eh jo dhhupp tere ghar hasse, meri hai.
Is de baajon meri umar haneri hai.
Is vich mere gham di mehak batheri hi,
Eh dhhupp kal si meri, ajj vi meri hai.

Maen hi kiran-vihoona is da baabal haan
Is de angi meri aggan samoi hai,
Is vich mere sooraj di khushboi hai.,
Sikhar dupehre jis di chori hoi hai.

Par is chori vich tera kuj vi dosh naheen,
Sooraj di har yug vich chori hoi hai.
Roundi roundi sooraj nu har yug andar
Koi na koi sada dupehri moi hai.

Maen nir-loa, risham-vichhoona araz karaan,
Maen ik baap adharmi tere duvaar khadda,
Aa hatheen ikk sooraj tere sees dharaan,
Aa ajj apani dhhupp lai tere paer phaddaan.

Men kalkhaai deh, tu menu bakhsh daveen
Dhhuppaan shaven mudd na mera naam laveen.
Je koi kiran kade kuj puchhe, chupp raveen,
Ja menu ‘kaala sooraj’ keh ke ttaal daveen.

Eh ik dhhupp de baabal di arjoi hai,
Meri dhhupp mere lai ajj toun moi hai,
Saney sooraje teri ajj toun hoi hai,
Dhhupp jedde ghar hasse, baabal soi hai.

Tu jo sooraj chori keeta
Tera si.
Mera ghar ta janam-divas ton
Nhera si.
