Lok Virsa Pehchaan / mul mantar
« on: February 05, 2011, 09:39:38 AM »
The Mool Mantar  :rabb: :rabb:(also spelt Mul Mantra) is the most important composition contained within the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs; it is the basis of Sikhism. The word "Mool" means "main", "root" or "chief" and "Mantar" means "magic chant" or "magic portion".

Together the words "Mool Mantar" mean the "Main chant" or "root verse". It’s importance is emphasised by the fact that it is the first composition to appear in the holy Granth of the Sikhs and that it appears before the commencement of the main section which comprises of 31 Raags or chapters.

The Mool Mantar is said to be the first composition uttered by Guru Nanak Dev upon enlightenment at the age of about 30. Being the basis of Sikhism it encapsulates the entire theology of Sikhism. When a person begins to learn Gurbani, this is the first verse that most would learn.

It is a most brief composition encompassing the entire universally complex theology of the Sikh faith. It has religious, social, political, logical, martial and eternal implication for human existence; a truly humanitarian and global concepts of the Supreme power for all to understand and appreciate.

This Mantar encompasses concepts which have been evaluated and proven over many eras (or yugs) and known to be flawless beyond any ambiguity what so ever. The rest of Japji sahib that follows this mantar is said to be a eloboration of the main mantar and that the rest of the Guru Granth Sahib totalling 1430 pages, is a detailed amplification of the Mool Mantar.

« on: February 05, 2011, 07:54:40 AM »

Teej is an important festival for the women of Punjab. The sawan month is eagerly waited by the people of Punjab as different festivals fall at this time period. The festival of Teej brings exuberance and chance to get along each other. Young girls and boys actively participate in events taking place in various towns and districts in Punjab. Celebration of Teej begins from the third day of sawan - the fifth Hindu month beginning from Chaitra.

Young women and men enthusiastically celebrate the occasion of Teej. At the time of Teej, many schools and colleges in Punjab organize competitions and cultural programs. Some competitions are organized on higher scale and are attended by senior government officials. The theme of the competitions is totally traditional and cultural. Competitive categories include rangoli, mehndi, dance, singing, painting etc. In colleges, Teej beauty contests take place where young girls passionately participate and win various titles like “Miss Teej”, “Teej Queen” and “Baby Teej”. Teej celebrations in villages too, are full of joy and verve. Young girls and women get along to perform Teej rituals. Girls swing on decorated swings called peeng and adorn their hands and feet with intricate mehndi designs.

Girls who perform gidda on Teej dedicate it to their husband or to-be-husband. Some of these special Teej dance and songs symbolize that women are always ready to sacrifice their life for their lover. After the dance performance young ladies offer prayers and sing songs for good health of their love. Teej fairs called Teelan are organized which has stalls with collection of traditional items like colorful bangles, juttis, dresses and earrings. Main attraction of Teej fair are the mehndi stalls.

At homes, people prepare special Punjabi Teej dishes like Kheer Puri, Gulgale, Karah and Pakoras. Family members sit together and enjoy the lavish feast. Men give blessings to their wife and both pray for each others' long and cheerful life.

. BANDAR KILA:

One of the player is tied to a Keela and many shoes and slippers are kept all around him. He has to safeguard these shoes and slippers, while the other players have to nick these and have to hit the player tied to the Keela with these. In between if the player who is tied to the Keela, touches any other player, then that player gets tied to the Keela and game continues like that.

It is a typical rural game and was very common among the village children, but now a days its hardly being played anywhere.

Lok Virsa Pehchaan / baante , marbles
« on: February 05, 2011, 07:48:02 AM »
Marbles were another star attraction for young lads who spent their summer and winter days playing ‘Pilaa Goli’ in the streets of villages.

The kids used to collect different types of Bante, some of bigger size, which were used to hit other small ones.

In this game, a small hole was made called 'pilaa or gutti' and then a line was drawn at a small distance. From the line the marbles were collectively thrown and it was tried to put as many bante into the 'pilaa or gutti' as possible.

Then, for the left out marbles, they were hit one by one with the help of a bigger banta and it was thrown with a finger while keeping the thumb on the ground. This was more and more Bante were hit and the kid with the maximum marbles at the end used to win.

Gup Shup /
« on: February 05, 2011, 07:11:46 AM »
