Lok Virsa Pehchaan / Re: Punjab History - Our roots« on: May 31, 2010, 01:29:11 AM »I wonder how old that map in Jhanda Amli’s second post is. If you look at the little key at the bottom explaining the religions there is a trishul for Hindus, a Crescent and Star for Muslims, a Swastika for the Buddhists and a Triangle for the Pre-Historic folk (ha ha). I wud like to try to answer this question..London Punjabi if u dont mind.. In the Vedic Era, Punjab was called ‘Sapat Sindu’. Sapat Sindu means the land of seven rivers - the Sindu, Jehlum, Ravi, Chenab, Beas, Satluj and Yamuna. The Mughals persianised its name by calling it ‘Panj – Aab’ or -the land of five rivers- excluding Sindhu and Yamuna. In 450 BC (2450 years ago), Alexander invaded Punjab and conquered the mighty Punjabi king named Porus whose kingdom was on the banks of river Chenab. He did not accept defeat and asked Greek king to show him the same respect as is due to the royal kings. He was restored back to his throne by Alexander. Alexander returned to Greece right before crossing the river Beas, as his forces refused to fight The history of Punjab goes back to the times of Indus Valley civilization or the arrival of the Aryans. Lord Rama is also said to have been born at a place called Ghuram, now in Patiala district. Lord Sri Krishna delivered the immortal message of the Gita at Kurukshetra, which was well within the boundary of Punjab till very recently. Sikh religion came into existence in early 15th century. The Sikhs became strong enough to rule the area of Punjab by 1760s.Ranjit Singh was crowned on April 12, 1801 (to coincide with Baisakhi). Sahib Singh Bedi, a descendant of Guru Nanak Dev, conducted the coronation . Gujranwala served as his capital from 1799. In 1802 he shifted his capital to Lahore and Amritsar. He gained more and more territory every year he ruled Punjab for 40 years. Therfore, We can Conclude this map must be made before 15th centuary or 18th century most proable before 18th century.. 2806

For Today.. "JHUMAR"
Jhumar is a male dance Performed in the area between Ravi & Chenab. It is a slow & natural dance performed with full intoxication & imitating the actions of ladies.ting the movements of sowing and reaping the harvest and of gaits of animals and birds.Jhumar comes from Jhum - which means swaying. The songs evoke a quality which reminds of "Swaying". Though the content of these songs is varied- they are usually love with emotional songs too. The Jhummar is a dance of ecstasy. Performed exclusively by men, It is a common feature to see three generations - father, son and grandson - dancing all together. The dance is without acrobatics. The movement of the arms only is considered its main forte. Toes are musically placed in front and backwards and turnings are taken to the right, sometimes the dancers place their one hand below the ribs on the left and gesticulate with the right hand. This dance does not tire out its performers and it is normally danced on moonlight nights in the villages away from the habitation. The dancers of this dance let-off a sound, "dee dee" in tune with the beat of the dance which adds to its grace. This dance is performed in harvest season. Although it is very similar to Bhangra dance. In this form of dance there is recreation of the gaits of animals and birds. After the partition of the Panjab most of the practioners of Jumar moved away, but Phokhar Singh (1916-2002) learned Jhummar from his uncle and had danced it since. Before his death he taught the dance to students at D.A.V college, Jalalabad, Punjab. There are three main types of jhummar, each of which has a different mood, and is therefore suited to different occasionally, reason of its predominating mood. They are: three main types of Jhumar..satluj jhummar, Beas jhummar ,Chenab jhummar
