Sikh Dharma is a spiritual path for those who are looking to answer the eternal question: “Who am I, and what am I here for?†Like all spiritual traditions, Sikhs have a lineage and legacy, guidelines and philosophies, masters, saints and its history. But primarily, the Sikh way of life offers a down-to-earth spiritual path for every-day people. It doesn't matter what your spiritual orientation is. Or what culture or background you belong to. Any person can use this technology to experience his or her own Divinity and Infinity 165

He received the gift of Amrit from the panj piaray on Baisakhi 1699. In the battle of Sarsa he had commanded the rear guard of Guru Ji's camp. In the Chamkaur fortress S.Ajit Singh Ji had seen the Sikh warriors go out in fives and die heroic deaths. He approched his father and asked if he could be next. Guru Ji took him in his arms and blessed him. Guru Ji sent him out with five Sikhs - Alim Singh, Jawahar Singh, Dhyan Singh, Sukha Singh and Bir Singh. The enemy fell before them as shrubs in a wind storm as they fought with great valour. When their arrows had been spend and swords broken they fell one by one. Sahibzada Ajit Singh at the tender age of 18 years died in battle as befitting a Sikh of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. 171

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Bhai Suman Ji And Bhai Moosan Ji« on: July 01, 2011, 11:50:34 AM »
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji were a father and son who were beloved Gursikhs of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj. Although these two Gursikhs were very poor materialistically they were very rich spiritually. On one occasion they had travelled to be blessed with Guru Ji’s darshan. After arriving in Guru Ji’s darbar and kissing Maharaj’s charankamal they did a benti to Guru Sahib to bless their village with his holy presence. Maharaj smiled at his two beloved Sikhs and accepted their request. In the presence of his Sangat Maharaj told all the Sikhs that they would be going to Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji’s house on such and such a day. Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji headed home with tears of happiness as they had been blessed by Maharaj with such a mahaan seva. Many times we often question how we will be able to do a seva that Guru Sahib has himself given us. But look at these two beloved Sikhs of Guru Sahib who didn’t have any maya to their name begging Maharaj for this seva. Bhai Suman Ji and his son Bhai Moosan Ji began to work day and night on the land of a rich man. Every day they would take the Name of Dhan Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj on their lips and would not stop working for sleep or food or water. With Maharaj firmly implanted in their minds all they thought about was the seva that they had been blessed with. After working very hard in this way finally the day of their payment had arrived. Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji had planned to use this money to buy all the things they required to make Guru Sahib’s langar with their own hands. When they went to see the rich man to collect their payment their clothes were dripping with sweat and had been stained with blood from their limbs. The rich man opened his door when he noticed Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji were coming, looked at them and simply refused to pay them for the work that they had done. Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji were heartbroken and went home. They were deeply saddened not that the rich man had refused to pay them but that they would not be able to perform Guru Sahib’s seva. After a while they though to themselves that the money they are owed is their right. They soon made a plan to go back to the rich man’s house in the night to take what was rightfully theirs. At night Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji used a ladder to climb into the house of the rich man. Bhai Moosan Ji went in first, slipped and was dangling from the rich man’s ceiling. As Bhai Moosan Ji was dangling he began to hear voices and realised that the rich man’s family had woken up. Without a second thought Bhai Moosan Ji looked up to his father had said, “Pita Ji cut my head off”. Bhai Moosan Ji had asked his father to do this as he knew that if the rich man came and saw him dangling there word would get around that Sikhs of Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj are thieves. This is the love Gursikhs have for their Guru. Bhai Suman Ji knew this too and quickly took out his sword and with one blow cut his son’s head off. This is the love Gursikhs have for their Guru. Bhai Suman Ji wrapped his son’s head in a cloth and went home leaving his body there. When the rich man came out he saw a dead body which had been decapitated on the floor. He then began to think that if people come to know that there is a dead body in my house they will think that I am a murderer. With the help of one of his servants he put Bhai Moosan Ji’s body on a cart and decided to take the body to the house of Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji as these were the only honest people that he knew who he could depend on. When he arrived at Bhai Suman Ji’s house he gave Bhai Suman Ji the money that was owed to them. He then told him that there was a body that he had bought with him in the cart that he wanted them to get rid of. Bhai Suman Ji took his son’s body from the cart and into his house. He then placed it with the head of Bhai Moosan Ji that he had brought back and covered both with a sheet. Bhai Suman Ji did an ardas to Maharaj and thanked Guru Ji. He then began to make the langar for all the sangat who were due to arrive the following morning. In the morning Bhai Suman Ji’s beloved Guru arrived with his sangat. As Guru Ji was about to have his langar he looked at Bhai Suman Ji and said, “Suman where is your son Moosan I haven’t seen him. Go and call him.” Guru Ji then turned towards the house where Bhai Suman Ji had covered his son’s head and body and started calling out to Moosan. As soon as Guru Maharaj did this Bhai Moosan Ji came out of the house and bowed together with his father Bhai Suman Ji at the charankamal of their beloved Guru. Akho Satnaam Sri Waheguru. Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh 173

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Guru Ji's True Form« on: May 30, 2011, 04:27:40 PM »
Wahegurujikakhalsawahegurujikifateh
One time a Sikh had a very strong longing to see the holy charan kamal of Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. He had heard many stories and praises of the beauty of Guru Sahib from all the people in his village but such were his karams that Guru Sahib hadn't blessed him with darshan yet. One day while the Sikh was in an extreme state of vairaag he was told by a passer that the King of kings, the Saint of saints, Satguru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj was going to pass through Orissa (which is where this Sikh lived) during the next few days. Suddenly the Sikh's heart lit up as he waited impatiently to see Nirankar. Finally the day arrived. So overpowered by the beauty of Maharaj the Sikh, placed his head on the floor and tears of joy began to form a stream of love. The Sikh sat at the feet of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji and listened with complete focus to Dhurkibani. After spending a few days with the sangat Maharaj then indicated that he intended to visit other villages/cities. When Maharaj was about to go the Sikh fell to his knees, began to shed tears again and did a profound ardas begging Guru Sahib to stay with him always. Maharaj looked at his beloved Sikh, picked him up, held him and said, “My beloved, I am much more than this temporary vessel. If you love me then love my shahbad, love my gurmantar and my mool mantar it is that that is my true form. If you fall in love with that form I promise I will never leave you as I will come and reside in your heart and soul forever.” Loose translation from katha based on the sakhi recorded by Bhai Mani Singh Ji in Sikhan di Bhagat Mal Wahegurujikakhalsawahegurujikifateh 177

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Sodi Paatshah.« on: May 08, 2011, 09:57:42 AM »
Taken from Gyani Amar Singh Ji's book of Sodi Paatshah.
During the time period of Guru Amar Das Ji, the city of Govindwal was flourishing. Sangat would come especially to do Guru Ji's darshan. During this time, Bhai Jetha Ji (who later became Guru Ram Das Ji) , came to Baasarke, to live with his maternal grandparents. Bhai Jetha Ji was born in 1534 in Lahore to Mata Daya Kaur & Hardas Ji. However his parents passed away while he was very young. He then came to stay with his maternal grandparents at Basarke. When he heard about Govindwal & the praises of Guru Amar Das Ji, he left Basarke and came to stay in Govindwal. Just before Bhai Jetha Ji left for Govindwal, a very significant incident took place that changed the course of his life. His Naniji had bestowed on him the responsibility of selling 'ghungreeyaa' (boiled grains). One day as he left home to sell 'ghungreeyaa' , he met some holy men on the way. They asked him for 'ghungreeyaa' as they were very hungry. Bhai Jetha Ji sat down and offered them a handful of the same, thinking they will be satisfied with that. However, the holy men were not satisfied and asked him for more. Bhai Jetha Ji was so selfless & humble that he gave all the ghungreeyaa he had to the holy men. Bhai Jetha Ji's Naniji had given him the grains in the morning, thinking he would bring home some earning. When he returned home, Naniji asked him how much he had earned, to which Bhai Jetha Ji replied "Kuch vi nahi". He narrated the entire incident to her but she couldn't believe him. Bhai Jetha Ji was very hurt with Naniji's words & so he left for Govindwal. Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Ramkalee dee Vaar : ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥ Salok mėhlā 5. Jaisā saṯgur suṇīḏā ṯaiso hī mai dīṯẖ. vicẖẖuṛi▫ā mele parabẖū har ḏargėh kā basīṯẖ. Har nāmo manṯar ḏariṛā▫iḏā kate ha▫umai rog. Nānak saṯgur ṯinā milā▫i▫ā jinā ḏẖure pa▫i▫ā sanjog. ||1|| Shalok, Fifth Mehl: As I have heard of the True Guru, so I have seen Him. He re-unites the separated ones with God; He is the Mediator at the Court of the Lord. He implants the Mantra of the Lord's Name, and eradicates the illness of egotism. O Nanak, he alone meets the True Guru, who has such union pre-ordained. On reaching Govindwal too, he made a living by selling 'ghungreeyaa'. As Lahore was easily accessible from Govindwal, many travelers en-route to Lahore would pass by Govindwal. Bhai Jetha Ji was very happy here to see the sangat. The sound of kirtan from the Guru's Darbar filled his heart with happiness & peace. Twice a day he would pay respects at the Guru's Darbar, while he sold 'ghungreeyaa' in the day. It is believed that when Bhai Jetha Ji called out to passers by, "Ghungreeyaa leh lo", in his sweet, melodious voice, they would stop by just to listen to him. Guru Amar Das Ji had two daughters; Bibi Dani Ji & Bibi Bhani Ji. Bibi Dani Ji was married while Bibi Bhani Ji was to get married. Guru Sahib jaanee jaan sann. He would sit quietly engrossed in the thoughts of Akaal Purakh. However his wife, Bibi Bhani Ji's mother was very concerned about her daughter's future. One day while Bhai Jetha Ji was passing by the Guru Darbar and calling out "Ghungreeyaa leh lo", Bibi Dani Ji's mother asked Guru Sahib that their daughter was of marriageable age & they must find a suitable match for her. Guru Sahib Ji, jaanee jaan sann. He asked Mata Ji, "Kidda ko larkaa honaa chaheeda hai?" Mata Ji had seen Bhai Jetha Ji a few times selling 'ghungreeyaa'. However today she looked at him with much love & admiration. Bhai Jetha Ji had such noor & bakshish on his face that Mata Ji couldn't help admiring him. She told Guru Sahib, "Jidda ko munda ghungreeyaa vechar vaala hai, eho jeha hi koyi hove, taa theek hai." On hearing this Guru Amar Das Ji laughed and said, "Bholeeye! Eho jehaa taa kudrat ne eho hee paida kitaa hai, hor kitho hovega?" Mata Ji was taken aback with Guru Sahib's words. She said "Maharaj! Mera matlab hai ki edda koh munda hovey." Guru Sahib again said, "Oh bholeeye! hun kyu bharam karni hai? Iss jehaa eho hi hai." Mata Ji became apprehensive now thinking, how could Guru Sahib give his daughter's hand to Bhai Jetha Ji! Guru Amar Das Ji sent a sewak to call Bhai Jetha Ji. On arriving at the Guru's darbar, Bhai Jetha Ji kept the basket of ghungreeyaa on the floor, bowed before Guru Ji and sat down. Gyani Amar Singh Ji [the writer of this sakhi], wonders there was a time when Bhai Jetha Ji did Guru Amar Das Ji's darshan from a distance and today Guru Sahib gave him the opportunity to do his darshan so closely. With his head bowed in humility, Bhai Jetha Ji asked "Ji Satguru Ji, iss nimaare layee ki hukkam hai?" Guru Sahib replied, " Saada taa koyee hukkam nahi, par iss teri mata ji nu tere naal kam pai gaya si." Guru Ji then looked at Mata Ji and asked, "Ki salaah hai? Iss vargaa taa eho jeha hi hai." Mata Ji replied "Aap maalak ho, jivey theek samjhde ho, uve hi theek hai. Mein tuhaadi hukkam-adoolee dee aviggyaa nahi kar sakdi, na mein tuhadeeyaa door-darshi gallaa bare koyi andaaza hi laa sakdi haa, iss layi aap theek hi aakh rahe hovoge." After listening to Mata Ji's words, Guru Amar Das Ji asked Bhai Jetha Ji about his family & where he lived. Bhai Jetha Ji with utmost humility and respect answered all questions of Guru Sahib, and kept on repeating, "Paatshah! Mein ta yateem haa, gareeb haa, nitaara haa, par tuhade aasre te ithe Govindwal vich hi jeewan-nirbaah kar reha haa." Nimaareyaa de maarn, nitaareyaa de taarn, nioteyaa di oat, niaasreyaa de aasre, nigatteyaa di gatt, nipatteyaa di patt, te nidhiniyaa di dhir baran wale Guru Amar Das Ji , smiled after listening to Bhai Jetha Ji and said, " Assaa tera yateempura khatam kar dera hai, tennu apnaa puttar barah lehraa hai." After saying these sacred words, Guru Amar Das Ji sent Bhai Jetha Ji to Lahore and told him that he would like his daughter wedded to him. Guru Sahib also asked Bhai Jetha Ji to now go and prepare for the wedding, and later if he wished he could return to stay with Guru Sahib. Kirtan ~~~ P.S. The above is a small attempt at translating from Gyani Amar Singh Ji's book on Sodi Paatshah which is written in Gurmukhi. There may be numerous mistakes while doing so, bhull chuk mauf karna ji. |
