Religion, Faith, Spirituality / AHANKAR
« on: August 05, 2011, 09:24:12 AM »
AHANKAR (hankar as it is commonly pronounced in Punjabi) is a compound of Sanskrit aham (I) and kar ('maker') and means I-maker, i.e. what individuates the person as I. It stands for egotism, egoism, self conceit, self centredness, vanity or simply pride. Other synonyms used in the sacred texts of the Sikhs are man, abhiman, garab, guman, ahang, ahammeu, ahambudh, haumai and khudi. Pride is regarded as an undesirable trait in all ethical systems; it is counted among the seven deadly sins in the religious literature of the West.

Sikhism considers it not as a metaphysical myth as is done in Sankhya and Buddhism but as one of the five common human weaknesses or evils. Ahankar is vanity, elation or exultation arising from an exaggerated view of one's own merit. The merit may consist in real or presumed intellect, scholarship, physical strength or beauty, worldly rank and possessions or even spiritual accomplishments. Whatever the source, ahankar is counted a frailty. Says Guru Amar Das, "it is a deadly disease and the cause of the unending cycle of birth, death and rebirth" (GG, 592).

Again, "Pelf is like poison, for it engenders arrogance.None sunk in arrogance wins approval" (GG, 666). In another hymn, Guru Amar Das declares: "Egoity is the adversary of nam (absorption in God`s Name); the two cannot abide together" (GG, 560). Guru Arjan thus addresses ahankar personified: " 0 thou, the cause of birth and death: 0 thou, the soul of sin: Thou for sakest friends and slowest enmities: Thou spreadest the net of illusion far and wide"(GG, 1358). Even virtues and pieties are rendered sterile if accompanied by ahankar, as says Guru Tegh Bahadur, Nanak IX: " Pilgrimages, fasting and charities if they lead to guman (pride) go waste like the bath by an elephant (who after bathing besmears his body with dirt)" (GG, 1428).

Remedies suggested in Sikhism are humility and seva (self abnegating deeds of voluntary service). The two are complementary virtues. For Guru Arjan humility is a weapon against not only ahankar but all vikars or evil tendencies. Says he, "Humility is my mace, being the dust of the feet of all, my dagger. These weapons vanquish all vices" (GG, 628); Seva is a highly prized virtue in Sikhism. To quote Guru Arjan again: "I feel blest rendering service to God`s servants by drawing water for them (from the well), by swinging the fan over their heads (in holy congregation) and by grinding corn (for their meals).

State, territory and mundane offices are of little value" (GG, 8ll). Another remedy is to be aware of the insignificance and transience of man in the context of cosmic vastness. Kabir wonders at the vanity of men who pride themselves upon trifles. "Even kings mightier than Ravana," he says, "perished in a twinkle"(GG, 1251) .Judicious self respect and a sense of honour should not however be mistaken for pride. Humility does not rule out the former. Says Guru Nanak: "If one loseth one's honour, all that he eats is unclean" (GG, 142).

Wahegurujiakkhalsawahegurujikifateh

One time Baba Sri Chand Ji and Bhai Chaliya Ji were sat on a bank of a river waiting to cross it. That day the tide was very high. Bhai Chaliya Ji who had done sangat of Baba Ji for a long time knew that Baba Ji was blessed with spiritual powers as a direct result of the Naam Kamaiya he had undertaken. After waiting for a long time Bhai Chaliya Ji requested Baba Ji to somehow transport them across using his powers.

Baba Sri Chand looked at Bhai Chaliya Ji and said, “It is very easy to use Ridd Sidh, in fact we could use this stone that we are sat on to take us across the whole river.”

When Baba Ji said this the stone began to levitate in the air. Baba Ji angrily looked at the stone and said that he was giving updesh not hukam and that the stone should take it's place on the ground. Baba Ji then continued and said, “It is much harder not to use them but this is the path that the true seekers of Akaal Purakh tread on.”

Bhai Chaliya Ji smiled and said, “Baba Sri Chand Ji you are such an elevated soul who has done so much Naam abhiyaas and who are above Ridd Sidh why is that Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj chose Bhai Lehna Ji rather than you?”

Baba Ji looked at Bhai Chaliya Ji and said, “Bhai Chaliya Ji I saw Guru Sahib as my father. Bhai Lehna Ji (Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji Maharaj) saw him as God.”

(Loose translation from Punjabi Katha, originally transcribed in Jeevani Baba Sri Chand)

What do you see Guruji as?

Quote
"Let us sing the praises of Nanak, King of kings of both worlds
The whole world is His temple, congregations sing sweet songs in His praise
Millions of goddesses kindle holy lights in His honor
All the gods sing psalms of His praises
All wash His lotus feet
The Sun and moon illuminate Him with their radiance
He is garlanded with mountains of flowers The True Master,
the fountain of Light is merciful to the poor
The king of the winds fans Him while saints and sages meditate on His holiness
The whole universe vibrates with His celestial song
The bells ring out - Onkar
Continuously illuminating the heavens
He is one with God whose name is Truth In Nanak saints find their support
Siri Chand, Nanak's son, declares Nanak is unattainable, unfathomable, unshakeable and pure
Whoever sings Emperor Nanak's praises resides in heaven and achieves complete salvation
Oh kind master: give protection to those who seek your shelter.
Oh Nanak: You are the savior we are just your children"

These beautiful words of praise for Guru Nanak are the words of Baba Siri Chand ji written in praise of his father, Guru Nanak and sung by him and the entire sangat as they welcomed the great Guru home from his third Udasi (world pilgrimage) with flowers and candlelight.”

‪Amir Liaqat Hussain. Ramzan Asalaam. Ramadan Pakistani Nasheed Naat‬‏ - YouTube.flv

Ramadan (Arabic: رمضان‎ Ramaḍān, Arabic pronunciation: [rɑmɑˈdˤɑːn]) (also Ramazan) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which lasts 29 to 30 days. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating and drinking[1] during daylight hours and is intended to teach Muslims about patience, spirituality, humility and submissiveness to God. Muslims fast for the sake of God (Arabic: الله‎, trans: Allah) and to offer more prayer than usual. Compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving backwards by about eleven days each year depending on the moon; thus, a person will have fasted every day of the calendar year in 34 years' time. Muslims believe Ramadan to be an auspicious month for the revelations of God to humankind, being the month in which the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed to the Islamic prophet, Muhammad.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Hinduism Code of Conduct
« on: July 21, 2011, 07:46:03 AM »
Hinduism has a strict code of conduct that its followers should abide by in their daily lives. It consists of ten restrictions, or yamas and ten observations, or niyamas. This is the ethical and moral discipline of the Sanatana-dharma religion, without the support of which, spiritual progress would be absolutely impossible.

YAMAS OR RESTRICTIONS

1. Ahimsa: non-violence, or not to harm or assault any living being, either verbally, mentally or physically. To practice kindness and compassion for oneself and for others. To live perceiving everything and every living being as a different manifestation of the Divine, and to respect and love others as we love ourselves.

2. Satya: to live in the truth, to be truthful on the level of thought, word and communication, to keep our promises, not to keep secrets from our loved ones. To always tell the truth, but to be very conscious and careful not to cause unnecessary harm or pain to others. That is to say, that our fulfillment of truthfulness should not be incompatible with our vow of ahimsa.

3. Asteya: not to steal, not to take what belongs to another. Theft is the result of believing that we lack something or that we do not deserve something, which demonstrates ignorance. It is important to get used to seeing the beautiful in us, to watch our own inner richness, to understand that the attitude of desiring what belongs to others is a product of a lack of internalization. It is also not to use tricks or illicit means to obtain benefits.

4. Brahmacharya: sexual moderation, conservation of energy, abstinence, celibacy. To avoid excesses in our sexuality; before marriage to use the energy in study and training, and after marriage to limit its expression only to sex within the marriage and only with the object of procreation. Sex is not, in any case, a mere means of satisfying the senses. The practice of brahmacharya also includes complete abstinence from conversations and jokes about sex and avoidance of photographs and films of a pornographic character, as well as an effort to communicate with the opposite sex in a decent manner.

5. Kshama: patience, to be patient and tolerant towards others. We should not expect the entire world to adjust to our ideas; every person has a certain character and habits corresponding to the ways they were influenced in childhood and life. It is important to be compassionate and patient and try to understand others, to be patient with the family and children, and with the neighbors and co-workers. Every follower of the Sanatana-dharma religion has to be an example of patience and tolerance with all persons and in all the different circumstances that life presents.

6. Dhriti: constancy, power and firmness of character. It is necessary to persevere and be constant in our life in order to grow and develop in any field we choose. A mature person who knows what he wants in life will not surrender easily when faced with any kind of difficulty.

7. Daya: compassion, one of the most important virtues in our spiritual development. It is born in our vision of the world and of every living being as a Divine expression and manifestation, which moves and drives us to see the ones around us not as objects, but as beings, souls.

8. Arjava: honesty, not to cheat other people, to be honest both with others and with ourselves. To renounce deceit completely, both deceit of those around us and deceit of ourselves.

9. Mitahara: moderation of the appetite. It is important to eat to live, and not to live to eat. It is very different to eat healthy food and lead a healthy life, than to turn the process of eating into a mundane activity of sensual satisfaction or addiction. It is recommended to eat at regular hours, not to eat meat, eggs or fish, and to accept only foods that have been offered to the Divine; that is, only prasadam. It is not recommended to eat in restaurants, or to consume foodstuff if we do not know how, or by whom, it was prepared.

10. Shaucha: cleanness or external and internal purity. This refers to the care of our own body and its surroundings, with a very high level of hygiene that characterizes every follower of Hinduism. Our environment reflects our interior; that is to say, the emphasis on the cleanness and order of our environment will have a sattvic influence on our inner world. Cleanliness draws the Divine closer to us. It is also very important to maintain cleanliness, order and purity both at the verbal and mental levels.

NIYAMAS OR OBSERVANCES

1. Hri: remorse, to be modest and express our shame and discomfort about our own errors and inappropriate behavior. It is important to develop enough modesty to be able to apologize for our faults in front of others. We must not let time go by without really exerting ourselves to grow, evolve and develop.

2. Santosha: contentment with what God has assigned for you as your quota, the attitude of accepting what is and what you have, which indirectly leads to the gratitude for life. Santosha consists of living with a content and grateful attitude, not with a negative attitude of being exploited. Make wise use of anything at your disposal and do not experience unnecessary distress over whatever you do not have.

3. Dana: to give, remembering not to see the fruits of our efforts as our own, but as belonging to the Divine. However, it is not advisable to give something to anyone without using common sense. For example, we do not give cigarettes to smokers, meat to meat eaters, alcohol to drunkards and drugs to drug addicts; we do not give money without discrimination to someone we know will spend it on beer. It is about helping by sharing a portion of the fruits of our labor with religious and spiritual organizations. What humanity really needs is spiritual wisdom, because the disconnection of humanity from God is the real reason for all the problems.

4. Astikya: faith and confidence in oneself, in our spiritual path, our religion, our revealed scriptures, in our master guru maharaja and in God. To develop confidence in the words of the revealed scriptures, as well as of the previous acharyas and of our own spiritual master.

5. Ishvara Pujana: worship, to do whatever possible to make a separate space in our home, and if possible a room, that is intended  for worship. To arrange an altar with our Ishta Devata and some portraits of our guru, to burn incense there, to keep this place clean and very much in order. To offer daily worship under the guidance and instruction of our spiritual master and more advanced swamis. It is of vital importance that  families create more homes that will allow devotion to God to grow and develop.

6. Siddhanta Shravana: to listen to lectures and talks about the revealed scriptures. We should look for a wise guru or bona fide spiritual master and follow his instructions, trying to attend his classes on the Vedic scriptures regularly. The study of the scriptures in direct association with saints, sages and more advanced god-brothers is a powerful aid to purify our mind and intellect.

7. Mati: wisdom, under the guidance of an authentic spiritual master, to exert oneself to spiritualize our intellect and will, to comply with the daily sadhana recommended by our spiritual master.

8. Vrata: sacred vows. We should be very serious concerning our sacred vows and commitments to our religion, our guru and God; basic vows such as avoiding  the eating of meat,  intoxication, illicit sex and  games of chance, are important and very serious observations which are actually a spiritual commitment we make with our parampara, or lineage of masters. It is important to be very strict with vows like marriage, loyalty to a spiritual line, vegetarianism, celibacy, etc., etc., and to be very strict in the sadhana and spiritual practices recommended by our own guru.

9. Japa: repetition of the mantra. This is considered the broom of the mind. In the same way that you bathe and clean yourself daily, the name of God sweeps and cleans the mind of all that is low and negative. Therefore japa is a kind of spiritual hygiene; it is a very important means to keep ourselves in tune with the Divine and transcendental.

10. Tapas - austerities. This refers to having the discipline and maturity to know how to accept the uncomfortable situations that life presents. To happily and enthusiastically fast, worship, and go on pilgrimage to holy places. To live with a spirit of austerity without looking for excessive luxury or extravagances. Not to surrender indiscriminately to an exaggerated satisfaction of the senses.

Sare ral-mil bhangra ne pandi
Karde ne galan kende dondi hai wajaondi
Dhol dekh ke heran hoi jande
Kurian ne sikh lein ne dhol

Oh Dhol Jageero Da
Oh Dhol Jageero da paunda phire tamal

Loki takde na bari herani nal
Oh Dhol Jageero Da

Balay o balay
Pariyan de nalon wadh sajdi hai pari
Jadon dhol ute daga oh lagondi
Dekhdi hai mundeya no dingi akh kar ke

Dol dol pendah haioh husan punjabeney da

Getting up early in the morning

When you get up early in the morning you are supposed to say this: Alhamdu lillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilaihinnushur. It means: Thanks and praises to Allah who brought us to life after having given us death and to him we shall have to return. And don't forget to pray Fajr! And wash your face once you wake up.

Entering and coming out of the bathroom

While entering the bathroom make sure to put you left foot in first and say this: Allahumma inni  a'oodhu bika minal khubthi wal khaba'ith. It means: O Allah! I seek refuge with you from the bad and evil things. When we are in the bathroom we shouldn't talk.  Come out and put your right foot out first and say the following supplication: Ghufranaka. Alhamdu lillahilladhi adhaba anniladha wa'afani. It means I ask for your forgiveness. Thanks and praises to Allah who removed from me the suffering and gave me relief.

How to do wudu

Wash your hands three times, then rinse your mouth three times with right hand. Rinse your nose three times with left hand. Then wash your face three times. Then wash your forearms up to elbows three times. After that wipe your head with water once. Insert your index fingers in your ear holes, then wipe the back of your ears with thumb and front of your ears with index fingers. Now in the end wash your feet and rub your toes with you little fingers to make sure that water reaches between them. During this whole process make sure not to waste water. There is a saying of the prophet that even if you are standing on the banks of the river, do not waste any water. After completing wudu you  should say: Ash-hadu alla illallh wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu.

Going to the Mosque

When you leave the house you should say:Bismillahi tawak-kaltu alallah wa la haula wa la quwwata illah billah. It means: In the name of Allah. I put my trust in Allah and there is no strength nor power except Allah. When you are late for prayer some run towards the Masjid. But we should not do that because Allah's Messenger has said: When you hear the Iqamah, proceed to offer the prayer with calmness and solemnity and do not make haste. Pray whatever you are able to pray and complete what ever you have missed. When you enter the Masjid put your right foot in first and say:Bismillahi wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulilah.  Allahummaftahli abwaba rahmatik. It means: In the name of Allah and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah! Open for me the doors of your mercy.

Eating at the table

Let's say I was eating a melon and I forgot to say Bismillah our Prophet has given us guidance on all aspects of life. He taught us that if somebody forgot to say Bismillah before starting the meal he should say: Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu. (I start in the name of Allah at the beginning and end. You should also eat with your right hand and from what's in front of you. Also when you have food in your mouth we must not talk, that is bad manners. After your done eating you should say: Alhamdul illahilladhi at'amani hadhatta ama wa razaqanihi, min ghairi haulim,-minni wa la quwwatin.
