Religion, Faith, Spirituality / 52 court poets of Guru Gobind Singh
« on: July 07, 2014, 01:51:33 AM »
Bavanja Kavi, means fifty two poets in Punjabi. It is how the galaxy of poets and scholars who attended on Guru Gobind Singh is popularly designated.
Guru Gobind Singh, prophet and soldier, was an accomplished poet and also a great patron of letters.
According to Sarup Das Bhalla, Mahima Prakash, he sent out Sikhs to different parts of the country to invite and bring to him scholars of repute. His instruction was: "Let them bring with them works pertaining to the fields they specialize in." When they came, "the True Guru bestowed great respect and honour upon them and provided for them without disscrimination."
Although traditionally mentioned to be 52, the number of scholars who came and stayed with the Guru at one time or the other was even larger. Bhai Santokh Singh, Sri Gur Pratap Suraj Granth, mentions 52 poets and Bhai Sukha Singh, Gurbilas, 36 lekhaks (writers or scribes). Besides, there were Bhatts who often recited their own poetical compositions.
Several poets like Pandit Sukhdev, Brind, Alim, Kunvaresh, Kanshi Ram and Bhai Nand Lal Goya, who had earlier been at the Mughal court, came to spend the rest of their lives at the feet of the Guru. These men were assigned by Guru Gobind Singh to the task of rendering of Hindi, Sanskrit and Persian classics into Bhakha written in Gurmukhi script. The work appears to have been taken in hand quite early in his career, probably in 1678 and spread over the next two decades and more, including four very productive years at Paonta Sahib (from 1685 till 1688), until the Guru, foreseeing the impending conflicts that were to engulf Anandpur, relieved the poets, scholars and scribes.
Classics such as Chanakya Niti, Ranch Tantra, Hitopadesa, Upanishads and parts of Mahabharata were translated into Braj and Punjabi and works and manuals on martial arts such as rearing, training and employment of hawks, horses, elephants, camels and dogs were prepared. A few Hindi classics were transliterated into Gurmukhi.
According to Bhai Santokh Singh, author Sri Gur Pratap Suraj Granth, the entire work was collected into a single anthology called Vidya Sar or Vidya Sagar, meaning ocean of knowledge. The poet even mentions the weight of the whole mass of manuscripts nine maunds or approximately 350 kilograms. Whatever the quantity of the material, the entire treasure was lost consequent upon the evacuation of Anandpur in December 1705, most of it in the flooded Sirsa stream. Only small fragments and copies of some of the manuscripts already prepared and carried out of Anandpur by the authors themselves or by others survived.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Bhoomi Daku's Promise to the Guru
« on: December 24, 2012, 12:31:02 PM »
When Guru Nanak was traveling, he came to a village where a robber lived. The robber’s name was Bhoomi Daku. No one liked him because he was a thief. When he saw Guru Nanak, he respectfully pleaded, “Guru ji will you honor me by coming to my house so I can serve you?” Guru ji took mercy on the thief and said “OK, but before I come to your house, you have to make me four promises...         The first promise is: YOU WON’T STEAL FROM POOR PEOPLE. They don’t have much so that’s not fair. The second promise is that from now on: YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO SPEAK THE TRUTH. The third promise is: IF YOU GO TO SOMEONE’S HOUSE AND EAT FROM THEIR HOUSE, YOU WILL NOT STEAL FROM THEM. The fourth promise is: YOU WILL NEVER PUT THE BLAME ON SOMEONE ELSE. If you make all these promises, then I will come to your house.”Bhoomi Daku promised, “I swear I will keep all four of these promises.” So Guru Nanak went to his house and they enjoyed a nice evening together. Bhoomi Daku felt very happy and blessed to have such a wise and spiritual soul grace his house.
Later Bhoomi Daku went out, as usual, to go steal from people. Since he couldn’t steal from the poor, he decided to go and steal from the king’s house. When he got to the kings house there were bodyguards blocking the way in. He tried to sneak in when they weren’t looking but a bodyguard caught him and said, “Who are you and why are you here.” Bhoomi Daku remembered his promise to tell the truth. So he told the body guard, “Well sir, my name is Bhoomi Daku and I have come here to steal from the king.” The body guard started laughing, “What a ridiculous joke! I bet you’re a friend of the king. Come on in sir.” What a surprise, it worked! He told the truth and got right in.
Bhoomi Daku walked into the king’s house. He thought to himself, “How great Guru Nanak is! Because of his promises I’m now near the most wonderful riches I have ever seen!” He saw all kinds of jewelry and treasures, which he proceeded to put in his bags. As he kept stealing he smelled something very, very good. It smelled like chocolate cake! He walked into the kitchen and opened the oven and there it was - a beautiful, delicious cake. Chocolate cake was his very favorite food! He could not help reaching out and taking a piece of the cake. It tasted so good! But right as he tasted the first bite he remembered his promise to the Guru. If he eats from someone’s house, he can not steal from them. So he dropped his bags right there and he sneaked out of the palace.
In the morning, the king noticed some of the cake missing, and he saw the bag of treasure lying on the ground. “Someone has been here! Find out who it is and bring him to me!” So the king’s men went to the town and started asking people about it, but no one knew anything. After a while the guards got annoyed and started beating people. The people cried out, “We have done nothing wrong!” But the guards kept beating the people. When Bhoomi Daku heard the people crying out, he remembered his fourth promise to the Guru.
So he ran out and said . “Stop, stop! Don’t beat them, they are innocent. I am the robber, punish me instead!” So they brought him to the king. Bhoomi Daku explained everything to the king, but the king was confused and asked, “I heard that no one suspected you. Why did you confess?” “Sir, the fourth promise I made to the Guru was that I wouldn’t put blame on others for what I do. These people were taking the blame for me, so I had to keep my promise.” The king was impressed. “You must have a great Guru because you have kept all these promises you made to him. I am impressed with your Guru, I’m not going to punish you. You are free to go.” Then Bhoomi Daku asked the king, “But what about those poor people who were beaten for no reason?”
The king decided to throw a big party and invite everyone. During the party, Bhoomi Daku stood up in front of everyone. He announced to everyone, “I don’t know where Guru Nanak is now but I kept the four promises I made to him. I now make a fifth promise: I WILL NEVER STEAL AGAIN, AND I WILL FOLLOW THE TEACHINGS OF THE GURU.” The people were happy to hear him say this. The king, Bhoomi Daku and all the people in the village ate chocolate cake together and they lived very happily from that day on.

Shayari / ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ
« on: December 08, 2012, 11:44:22 AM »

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / My turban saves me
« on: November 15, 2012, 12:47:53 PM »
By Jagjit SinghNov 12, 2003My turban has saved me so many times that I cannot even begin to explain. Like most, I am also filled with greed. I even thought about conning or tricking others in order to accumulate wealth. However, every time I think about doing such actions, I think about my turban. A thought comes in my mind, how will my Guru feel if I do such a thing. I am a Sikh and a Sikh must walk on the path of humility and live happily in whatever God has given me. If I have not had a turban on my head, I probably would have become a thief or a con man. My turban saves me.My turban saves me from bad company as well. When I was in high school, I saw a person who was talking to high school kids about drugs. He would approach the kids and show them a small packet containing the drug and would ask them to try it. But he did not talk to me, he did not come near me, he saw my turban and kept his distance.I sometimes think how my life would have been if I have not had a turban. It would be very easy to talk to be in contact with druggies and thieves. Having such a company, I probably would have become a drunkard and/or a drug addict. The symbol Guru Ji gave me actually saves me. Now I know the importance of turban and its purpose. It is not just an identity of a Sikh but also keeps a Sikh away from bad company and keeps a Sikh focused in life.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Sakhi Of Guru Nanak Dev Ji
« on: November 15, 2012, 12:41:57 PM »
Here is a nice Sakhi of Guru Nanak Dev Ji for a Friday afternoon. On one of his travels Guru Ji came to a town and stopped at the house of an old  Sikh called Chundhwadi. He was very poor and was in a fluster as to what food to place in front of Guru Ji. He went to the local town not knowing what to do. While he was there he saw a gathering of people and went to see what was happening. It was a wrestling match and the local Nawab was parading his champion. Now, the champion was called Maskeen and was tall and muscular and was undefeated. He stood while the proud Nawab challenged all the town if there was any person who would take on his champion. Maskeen strode into the middle of the large circle flexing his muscles. No one dared step forward for fear of serious injury. When Chundhwadi heard that the prize was 50rps he thought that if he could get the money he could use it to buy provisions to place in front of Guru Ji. He stepped into the ring and declared his intention to wrestle Maskeen. All fell about laughing, how could such an old man who was just skin and bone take on the mighty Maskeen? As the two opponents came close Maskeen asked “What are you doing old man? You have no chance against me, what possesses you to fight me, you are going to get seriously hurt” Chundawadi said “Oh champion, Guru Nanak Dev Ji is coming to my house today and I have no food to place before him, my only chance is to beat you and use the prize money.”Maskeen fell into thought, “I have heard of Guru Nanak” he said “they say he is Khudha himself. I would also like to meet him.” After much soul searching he said “Old man, if I let you win will you take me to see Guru Nanak?”“Yes” said Chundawadi “but what will become of you? If you lose, and lose to an old man your patronage will end and what will become of you?” But Maskeen did not hear this, all he could think about was meeting Guru Nanak. So it happened that after a few moves Maskeen fell to the ground with a thump and as planned the old man put his foot on his chest and claimed the prize. There was pandemonium, there was a riot, the proud Nawab was humiliated and disowned his wrestler. Maskeens reputation was ruined, he knew that he would be turned out of his house. His family were even more livid, when they heard what had happened they planned to do away with him. They hastily dug a trench under his munja and stuck in spikes and covered the whole thing with large palm leaves, they planned to murder him and then plea with the Nawab to let them stay at the house.  As Maskeen finally got away from the crowd he could not find Chundawadi in all the commotion and wondered home. His favourite daughter met him on route. She had seen what was happening and told her father. But Maskeen was a broken man, he did not care what happened to him, he shuffled to his house and went straight to the munja and lay on it fully expecting the whole thing to collapse into the hole underneath, but nothing happened. His little daughter ran to him and peered underneath “Papa, I can see a man in robes holding up your munja” she shouted. He knew, he just knew. Maskeen jumped off the bed and before he knew it Guru Nanak Dev Ji stood before him. He fell to his knees placing his head on Guru Jis feet. Guru Ji sat him down. “Oh Maskeen, you were willing to lose everything for me, I am now here for you” Guru Sahib Ji blessed him and said that he would be remembered for always. Fifth saroop, Guru Arjan Dev Ji adds Maskeens name to the 15th Sloke in Sukhmani Sahib Ji – “ Sukhi vasay Maskeenia aap nivaar tallay, wudday wuddy hunkarian Nanak garab gallay. “

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / How can I see any of the Gurus?
« on: April 25, 2012, 01:01:57 PM »
The Gurus are here, we have only to know that they are here with us all the time. ((Guru Granth Sahib) Page 982)
Gurbani in Sri Guru Granth is the living spirit of the Gurus. When you read or listen to Gurbani, the Guru is talking to you and you are hearing the actual words of the Guru. Gurbani are words of the Guru in written form. The physical body of the Guru, of course, is not there. Anyway, the physical body was not the Guru' the word spoken by the Guru, Gurbani, is our Guru, according to the philosophy of Shabad Guru. That is why we bow to the Guru Granth Sahib. Please remember that whatever the Gurus practiced, it was recorded in words and passed on by them to us as Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Gurus don't have to come down to us. They did not leave us. They are with us. Enjoy "talking" to the Gurus and listening to them through Gurbani.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Eat little, Sleep little
« on: April 25, 2012, 12:51:21 PM »
As far as I know, Guru Amar Das ji used to tie his hair onto a wooden peg a few inches above his head as he sat cross-legged, so that if he fell asleep while doing simran his head would drop but his hair would be pulled and he'd wake up. Baba Nand Singh ji used to sit on a plank across the top of a deep well, so if he fell asleep while doing simran he'd fall and die. Basically because he'd rather be dead than forget God's Name. There's a shabad about 'why did I fall asleep.'. Guru Gobind Singh ji said eat little and sleep little.
Practically, I've tried doing things at the extreme i.e. little food, little sleep, I did get alot of blessings, but ended up falling asleep at work and my body got too weak without proper food. The real thing is to be a Khalsa - Sant-Sipahee. Healthy and strong like Baba Deep Singh ji and sharp and alert rather than falling asleep through laziness.
The body is a machine, it needs sleep, exercise and food. To me `eat little, sleep little' means don't get so lazy that you sleep through amritvela and forget God's Name. And don't get led by your tongue's desires so much so that you have lost your taste for doing Naam Simran. (sacheh naam kee lagee bhukh). But sleep and eat enough to be healthy.
