CHANDIGARH: Glowing tributes were paid to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his twentieth martyrdom anniversary. Congress workers and leaders held different functions across the state at district and block levels to commemorate the martyrdom of the great leader. It was observed as National Integration Day across the state.

The main function was held at the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee office here where hundreds of youth donated blood and took an oath to save the unity and integrity of the country. The party leaders and workers recalled the great sacrifice of late Rajiv Gandhi for saving the integrity of the country.

In his message the PCC President Capt Amarinder Singh recalled the vision of late Rajiv Gandhi which had launched India on to the path of modern development. He pointed out, it was late Rajiv Gandhi who launched India on the path of Information Technology on right time which enabled it to compete with countries like the US.

The PCC President recalled his close association and personal friendship with Rajiv Gandhi. He said, “Rajiv Ji was as great a human being as he was a great and visionary leader”. He pointed out, while on the one hand he thought of a futuristic IT concept at the same time he appreciated the ancient Indian institution of Panchayats and introduced Panachyati Raj across the country to provide power to people at the grassroots level.

The PCC Vice President Lal Singh presided over the function and exhorted upon the workers and leaders to follow the path set by Rajiv Gandhi.

95 units of blood were donated on the occasion.
