Navratri is a festival/ritual associated with the Hindu calendar. It includes nine days of fasting. So you eat certain things. You cleanse yourselves of evils (eating meat, gambling, drinking all that good stuff). Its supposed to give you willpower to practice that even after navratri.

It's celebrated in different ways all throughout India. But in Punjab, basically you do a puja everyday. You fast every day. You end on the ninth day with a big feast. Cooking sholay pooriya with parshad. You invite little girls and seek their blessings (they are supposed to represent the female version of goddesses like Sarswati, Durga, Lakshmi etc)). You give feed them, give them presents.

It's also a significant lead into dushera and diwali and karvachauth.
