This tutorial is recommended for newbie users who wants to try a new desktop operating system other than Windows.

It's the easiest way to install ubuntu using wubi installer, and can be uninstalled easily.

1. Go to this link below, scroll down, and download wubi.exe file on your desktop.

2. Double-click the wubi.exe, and you should see the setup like in the image below



  Choose desktop environment as ubuntu, Select the Installation size around between 10-15 gb, depending upon you, Enter   
  the username, and click Install.

3. Once you click the install button, You should see the image below.

   

   Downloading will begin from the internet. It should not take long if you have 1 mbps connection or faster.

4. After finishing, click reboot.

 

5. When computer boots up, Select ubuntu, and press Enter.

   

There you go, New desktop is ready to use.

This is fairy easy for new users who wants to use a stable,fast, and secure system rather than formatting windows everytime. lol

I wasn't able to get a copy of win 7. And I'm not going to pay for it. I sent in the computer for repair I broke the power connector. I told them to format it, dunno if they will.

If they don't then this is choice #2

Power connector on eeepc 1201n. I think It broke off the pcb board. battery won't charge.

if it was under warranty m prety sure they dnt cover it.
i could have fixed it. i did for my mate his laptop had the same problem so i had to open the whole laptop and then solder it back on the pcb.. took me abt 2 hours to do it but it was fixed

ASus is pretty good with the warranty. Shipping it to auz woulda been more expensive than it's worth. Guess I coulda got a vacation out of it. I should be getting it back tomorrow or Monday. Hopefully it's fixed.

Depends on the Harddrive type
goto Bios and have a look the HDD type
sometimes it is setup as a ASIC and sometimes as IDE mode

IDE mode is the way to go.
otherwise if its other than IDE you won't be able to select a harddrive .. it will say hdd not found .

That happens when OS doesn't have storage controller drivers. SATA is the common standard these days. The solution you mentioned is more like a workaround to get into the windows. but, It performance would decrease, and needs to use drivers for SATA drive if OS doesn't natively support.

The only solution is to integrate drivers in windows installation. It can be done manually or using Nlite.

Hey MSPT, what do think of the mint distro?

It's a ubuntu based linux distro. Basically, It's a tweaked version of ubuntu with new theme, and all other extras. Like, It comes with all codecs preinstalled, and few other tweaks. You can install all codecs, and prorietary softwares with just one click.


It's good as well for new users. Linux mint is one release behind ubuntu releases. So, You will have to wait 6 months for new features of ubuntu to use in Linux mint.  :huhh:

Is there a way to download files onto iPod/iPad using Linux?

The default music player " Rhythmbox"will let you transfer your songs onto your ipod. When you plug your ipod, ubuntu will detect as storage device. Open the partition, and transfer what you want to.

There are lot of cool media players for linux. Banshee is also good one.  :hihpanga:

Linux is pretty much the same. I'm getting use to it now, installing  apps was tricky but I think I can do it now. Other than that it's much faster than windows.

Well, Fedora core 3-4 is too old. Have a new copy of ubuntu, and use as live cd then tell me your first expressions. People are just used to using windows. And It's hard for them a change. Lot of people don't know about Gnu/linux. They are willing to spend  huge bucks for operating system, applications, Anti-virus, and other system utilities. ( except pirates)

I use Gnu/Linux because it allows me to have complete control over my system. I can hack it the way i want. If something doesn't work, I can report a bug, and get it fixed next day or later. It allows me to be involved with community, and take my feedback or suggestions. Free software will continue to improve, and get better.

Excuse me, Mac OS X is not rubbish. It's just too costly to afford.

Windows is, and will be faster on newer PCs because of the more memory, and faster processors.

Try to install windows 7 on old machine, and see the difference.


And Install puppylinux on old machine, and let me know.

First of all don't take offense of my words. It not about money If I can spend 3 grand on my pc ,getting a copy of a  MAC OS wouldn't pinch me.
I think its a personal Choice.

I like linux. You might have installed in last few years. But I had that about 7 years ago in my pc when not a lot were there. It looked pretty good and on Pentium 4 was running pretty good.

My machine is pretty good you can read my signature.Now I am making a new pc this xmas waiting for good sales. I am having AMD now I might go for Corei5/i7 lets see.

Ubuntu I've heard alot about this . Open source softwares I don't mind since anyone can contribute to it. I got a spare harddrive I'll try and installing it.

Please suggest the list of MUST HAVE softwares so that we can see what we need

My first linux distro was Fedora core 4. That was back in 2005. Since then, I have tried many linux distros.

Between, Money was not only the factor considering choice of operating system. I would not even use Windows or Mac OS x even if it was given free. There are other aspects to look at.

Let me know your experience after installing ubuntu. I might create thread of post-installation guide of ubuntu some other time.

i was wondering if you know how to set permission to the /var/www folder. Its been giving me a headache for a couple hours now. Basically i can't change the content of that folder. add/delete but i can execute tha html file in there.

I tried:

sudo chmod 755 /var/www/

try

cd /var

sudo chown username:username www 

That should do the trick.
 
You can also create sub directories inside www for different websites, and give same above permission to those directories. This is just for security reason.

I am using it now, I give my review after few days.
