I think they want to be treated equally on one hand and then also get the special benefits that the Indian laws give them.  And believe me, people who claim lower caste have higher benefits (which is ethically wrong); this is one thing very wrong with Punjab. Sikhs do not claim reservations or lower status, so all the jobs that are guaranteed to go to lower caste people are lost. In this sense, the Sikhs suffer in their own land. Sikhs have argued for this strange discrimination, but the central government of course does not care (votes is about all they'll ever care about).

I'm not sure if you know, but Dalits and Christian are hated all over India by Hindus (I'm not saying all Hindus. But Hindu fundamentalist organizations like RSS are known to be the perpetrators of violence against Dalits/Christians). If you watch the news, you can find at least one incident any day.

remember bro, a person who discriminates against somebody based on anything like castes/status/wealth, can never be a SIKH. When bowing to the Guru Granth Sahib ji, a Sikh is actively bowing to the hundreds of saints and gurus of different castes/religions/status/wealth.  Guru ji ne sanu sareya nu Singh te Kaur banaya hi ess karke. Jado tuhanu koi puche ki caste hai tuhadi, ohnu dasso ke meri caste hai Sikh.
