News Khabran / Tehran School teaches Punjabi.
« on: September 02, 2012, 06:00:32 PM »
It's an Indian school that's been in Iran since the 1930s. It shifted to its present location in Tehran in 1952, became a Kendriya Vidyalaya in 2004 and teaches five languages. On Wednesday, it received a Rs.2 crore boost, the third such grant in the past four years.
Gursharan Kaur, wife of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who is here for the Aug 30-31 summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), announced the grant amid thunderous applause during a visit to the central government run school here. After that, she prayed at the adjacent gurdwara.
"We're so thankful to her for coming here," an emotional Narender Kaur Sahni, in her mid 60s, told IANS after the function. Narender Kaur was born in Iran and her husband, Santokh Singh Sahni, is a prominent businessman.
The origins of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Tehran (KVT) go back to the southeastern province of Zahedan when the first Indian settlers established a school in the 1930s.
"At that time, there were some 15-30 Sikh families in Zahedan and the school had about 30 students. It was then affiliated to the Pubjab School Education Board," KVT principal Jugal Kishore told IANS.
As the Indian families shifted to Tehran, the school also moved and was resumed in a rented building by Bhai Makhan Singh, a stalwart of the Gurdwara Management Committee.
"He collected donations going from door to door and exhibited a lot of devotion and commitment to the construction of the school building, which was completed in the late 1960s. The Hinduja brothers also gave a big donation for the school," said Jugal Kishore, who was earlier principal of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Jalandhar Cantt in Punjab.
At its height, KVT had 350 students and was affiliated first to Punjab University and later to the Delhi-based Central Board for Central Education (CBSE).
However, following the 1979 revolution, the number of Indian families dwindled to just 60-65 and enrolment plummeted. It was then run by an ad-hoc panel of the Gurdwara Management Committee, with the head of the Indian mission being its patron.
In 2004, the embassy decided to hand it over to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS).
The school was hit by a major financial crisis in 2009-10 and would have gone under but for a Rs.81 lakh grant from the Indian external affairs ministry, to which visiting Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar added a Rs.2 crore grant in 2011. The KVS has been picking up the salary tab since 2012.
"Today, we have 189 students on our rolls from LKG to Class 12. Fifty-one of these are non-Indians. I am happy to tell you that our class 10 and 12 result has been 100 percent in the past two years," Jugal Kishore proudly said.
"We go by the CBSE curriculum and also teach five languages: Hindi, English, French, Persian and Punjabi. Persian is taught more as a language of communication," the principal added.

News Khabran / Yamaha Plans $500 Motorcycle For India
« on: June 26, 2012, 04:29:57 PM »
A $500 motorcycle may be on the horizon for two-wheeler enthusiasts — with shallow pockets — in India and across the globe.
According to Yamaha Motor Co.,  the company is in the planning stages of creating its cheapest motorcycle in India.
Yamaha reportedly hopes the new bike will boost its sales in the country to 2 million vehicles by 2016. It sold 520,000 cycles there in 2011 and expects to sell 640,000 in 2012.
This would be the third Yamaha model available in India, after the Crux, which sells for $635, and the YBR, which goes for $760.
Hiroyuki Suzuki, chief executive of India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd., told The Wall Street Journal that it was time for Yamaha to “address a bigger part of the market.”
“Just about one in every 25 people in India owns a two-wheeler,” he said. “There is a huge scope to attract more buyers with a fuel-efficient product that is priced reasonably.”
The company, which announced a five-year plan in May to build new products and a facility in India, did not set a release date for the motorcycle but said it would be exported.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Yamaha, which now has a market share of 3.5 percent, aims to control 10 percent by 2016.

News Khabran / No takers for Diljit's 1984
« on: June 22, 2012, 01:04:37 AM »
While Diljit Dosanjh is rather comfortable in his new found success as the romantic hero, after films like 'Mel Karade Rabba', 'Jihne Mera Dil Luteya' and now his upcoming 'Jatt & Juliet', the singer turned actor is disappointed that his attempt at serious cinema is hobbled with issues of financial funding.

Talking about his ambitious project in the pipeline, ' 1984 Punjab' Diljit says the film is ready to roll except for the fact that they can't find any producers for it. "It's very unfortunate that a film on such a sensitive topic cannot find any takers. No one is ready to fund the film so far, though Anurag Singh, (director of 'Yaar Anmulle') and I are ready with the film's script and stuff, no producer is willing to invest money into it. Everyone wants to make a masala film, and this kind of a film is a risk which no one wants to run," rues Diljit.

Though the subject touches a chord with most Punjabis, Diljit says the intended film will transcend regional barriers. "Anurag is doing a lot of research on real life cases of boys who left homes, or were made to leave homes, during that fateful year of 1984. And our film will focus of one such boy who left home but now wants to return and the kind of hurdles he faces on his journey back home," says Diljit who is very passionate about this project, "If God gave me that kind of money, I would have loved to produce this film myself."

Without romanticizing the pain in this subject, he says this would be an attempt to state facts as they were. "There is no intention of projecting images that did not exist, or distorting facts. Yet, in order to take a story on the screen forward, there has to be an added narrative, which will be there in this film too." The film also treads the fine line between commercial and art cinema. "This is in no way going to become an art film. It will be well within the precincts of commercial cinema and the audience won't take home a heavy feeling in their head," says Diljit who is also ready with two music albums, 'Back to basics' themed on Punjabi culture mixed with contemporary beats, and 'Temptation', which is an urban sound.

Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh is now the costliest pop artist in Bollywood. The Angreji Beat singer has charged Rs. 70 lakh for a song in a film titled Mastaan, starring Naseerudin Shah and his younger son Vivaan. It is the biggest amount paid to a song artist in Bollywood till date.

Singh has turned hot property after shooting to fame with his latest album, International Villager. Many tracks from the compilation are topping music lists such as world iTunes and BBC Asian charts.

The film’s producer Sunil Bohra confirms that Honey Singh has been roped in with a hefty fee. “Honey has become a household name after International Villager. I instantly fell in love with the song (that Singh composed and he plans to feature in the movie) as soon as I heard it. Though he wanted to launch that song as one of his own big hits, now, it will prove a game changer for my movie. I feel Rs. 70 lakh is less for it … I would have signed him for more if it was required,” he says.

Bohra has decided to shoot two videos of the song … one for the movie and the other, featuring Singh, for the promotions.
Honey has apparently sung the song in Hindi, not Punjabi, and it is expected to be released in two weeks from now. “I have paid more than 10 times of what we pay our usual singers because I am sure that the song will be a blockbuster and will prove beneficial for my movie,” says Bohra.

Top singers’ fee per song in Bollywood

Sonu Nigam: Rs. 10 – Rs. 12lakh
Mika Singh: Rs. 10 lakh
Pritam Chakraborty (singing + music composing) — Rs. 25 lakh
Sunidhi Chauhan — Rs. 3 – Rs. 5 lakh
Shreya Ghoshal – Rs. 3 – Rs. 5 lakh

News Khabran / Facebook Timeline Required for Everyone
« on: January 25, 2012, 08:13:08 PM »
We knew this day would come. Now the answer of “when” is somewhat clearer: Facebook Timeline is officially coming to all users within the next few weeks.

According to a Facebook blog post, Timeline will automatically be enabled for all Facebook users. Once users receive this notification, they’ll undergo a “preview period” during which Timeline will only be visible to them, allowing them to customize and hide content that they don’t want to be visible.

Many users have already enabled Timeline, either through the developer hack that was available in September or through the simple one-click activation that Facebook made available in December. For many, however, this will represent their first interaction with it. Even if users have friends that have enabled Timeline, they won’t see it unless they have Timeline enabled themselves.

This got us thinking about how Facebook is undergoing yet another wholesale change, something that we understand will rankle some users and that we’ve ruminated on in the past.

What do you think about Facebook Timeline becoming absolute? Take our poll below and let us know in the comments.
