« on: February 05, 2011, 07:49:24 AM »
. BANDAR KILA:

One of the player is tied to a Keela and many shoes and slippers are kept all around him. He has to safeguard these shoes and slippers, while the other players have to nick these and have to hit the player tied to the Keela with these. In between if the player who is tied to the Keela, touches any other player, then that player gets tied to the Keela and game continues like that.

It is a typical rural game and was very common among the village children, but now a days its hardly being played anywhere.

Lok Virsa Pehchaan / baante , marbles
« on: February 05, 2011, 07:48:02 AM »
Marbles were another star attraction for young lads who spent their summer and winter days playing ‘Pilaa Goli’ in the streets of villages.

The kids used to collect different types of Bante, some of bigger size, which were used to hit other small ones.

In this game, a small hole was made called 'pilaa or gutti' and then a line was drawn at a small distance. From the line the marbles were collectively thrown and it was tried to put as many bante into the 'pilaa or gutti' as possible.

Then, for the left out marbles, they were hit one by one with the help of a bigger banta and it was thrown with a finger while keeping the thumb on the ground. This was more and more Bante were hit and the kid with the maximum marbles at the end used to win.

Gup Shup /
« on: February 05, 2011, 07:11:46 AM »

Lok Virsa Pehchaan / bhangra @@
« on: November 27, 2010, 03:06:09 PM »
Bhangra is a traditional form of dance and music which originates from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. It was initially used as a celebratory folk dance which heralded the coming of spring, or Vaisakhi, as it is known.

Following the partition of India different regions of the country began to mix and interact sharing their different forms of Bhangra. The end result was a hybrid being created which incorporated the many different styles of the unique act. Bhangra became popularized chiefly due to the Sikh community who helped to integrate the music and dance into the Bollywood film industry.

In its purest form Bhangra is a mix of a singing accompanied by music and the beat of a single drum known as a dhol. The lyrics are always sung in the language of Punjabi and usually relate to social or cultural issues. These can be anything from marriage and love to money and dancing, or even getting drunk. Current Bhangra artists take their inspiration from all kinds of sources, often dealing with hot topics of the time. Bhangra seeks to offer a message along with its music. :excited: :excited:

Bhangra dances differ from region to region and still retain their own unique identities. The term Bhangra has come to incorporate a whole host of these dance forms including Jhumar, Luddi, Giddha, Julli, Daankara, Dhamal, Saami, Kikli, and Gatka. The dancers sing the chorus of the song whilst dancing around the drum, or dhol, which sets the unique beat of the dance.

Nowadays Bhangra influences can be seen in many Bollywood films and it’s even found its way into forms of popular non-Asian culture such is its unique appeal.

Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language like many other modern languages of South Asia. It is a descendant of Sauraseni Prakrit, which was the chief language of medieval northern India.[11][12][13]

Punjabi emerged as an independent language in the 11th century from the Sauraseni Apabhramsa.[14] The literary tradition in Punjabi started with Fariduddin Ganjshakar (Baba Farid) (1173–1266), many ancient Sufi mystics and later Guru Nanak Dev ji, the first Guru of Sikhism. The early Punjabi literature was principally spiritual in nature and has had a very rich oral tradition. The poetry written by Sufi saints has been the folklore of the Punjab and is still sung with great love in any part of Punjab.[citation needed]

Between 1600 and 1850, Muslim Sufi, Sikh and Hindu writers composed many works in Punjabi. The most famous Punjabi Sufi poet was Baba Bulleh Shah (1680–1757), who wrote in the Kafi style. Bulleh Shah practiced the Sufi tradition of Punjabi poetry established by poets like Shah Hussain (1538–1599), Sultan Bahu (1629–1691), and Shah Sharaf (1640–1724). His lifespan also overlapped with the legendary Punjabi poet Waris Shah (1722–1798), of Heer Ranjha fame. Waris Shah's rendition of the tragic love story of Heer Ranjha is among the most popular medieval Punjabi works. Other popular tragic love stories are Sohni Mahiwal, Mirza Sahiba and Sassi Punnun. Shah Mohammad's Jangnama is another fine piece of poetry that gives an eyewitness account of the First Anglo-Sikh War that took place after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

The linguist George Abraham Grierson in his multivolume Linguistic Survey of India (1904–1928) used the word "Punjabi" to refer to several languages spoken in the Punjab region: the term "Western Punjabi" (ISO 639-3 pnb) covered dialects (now designated separate languages) spoken to the west of Montgomery and Gujranwala districts, while "Eastern Punjabi" referred to what is now simply called Punjabi (ISO 639-3 pan)[15] After Saraiki, Pothohari and Hindko (earlier categorized as "Western Punjabi") started to be counted as separate languages, the percentage of Pakistanis recorded as Punjabi speakers was reduced from 59% to 44%. Although not an official language, Punjabi is still the predominant language of Pakistan

sikhs in france

French Sikhs have been in the limelight since the 2004 turban ban, banning Sikhs and other religions from sporting a headwear. This has met with anger and world wide protest by the Sikhs. At least five Sikhs wearing turbans or cloth covers for their uncut hair were barred from classrooms near Paris. [1]. For 3 years the Sikhs continuously persuaded the authorities to lift the ban on the turban. After no avail Gurdial Singh opened their own private Sikh school, called Shere Punjab complexe. Currently Shingara Singh Mann is fighting the case for the Sikhs to have a photograph with their turbans for the driving licenses. Many rallys around the world are happening to protest against this

Shere Punjab complexe
Shere Punjab complex is a private Sikh school in Paris. This school was created in the wake of the rule made by French authorities banning any religious symbol including the Sikh Turban. The school cost around 300.000 €, excluding building charges. [2] The Sikh school was built by a local Sikh entrepreneur, Gurdial Singh, whose son was excluded from a public school in 2004. The boy had refused to remove his turban in class. The school began with less than 15 pupils. [3]
