I've seen people don't use that word here . In India, when we goto school we call our teachers as Sir, Madam not by names. its sort of disrespect in India

its not hard for you to learn the punjabi language. you can always goto a nearby Gurudwara(sikh temple) and get some books from them
make sure you wear punjabi suit and cover your head before you enter the temple. Its a sort of respect for the religion :)
Revise the alphabets. and then read some smaller combination of words. and then you will get profficient in abt 3-4 months time
