Tech Lounge / SAMSUNG HD ICON ( High Definition) Phone

SAMSUNG HD ICON TOUCHSCREEN PHONE

Cameraphones have been catching up to dedicated digital cameras for a while now - Sony Ericsson even uses its Cybershot brand on its best camera phones. But while 8 megapixel-standard cameras have been in mobile handsets for a while now, it's a rare treat to find a mobile phone with the grunt to take on a camcorder. Enter the Samsung HD Icon: with an 8 megapixel camera and the ability to record 720p high-definition video, this phone is a direct challenger to some of the standalone high-def video cameras out there - and it'll make calls to boot.

Features

The 3.7 inch, 16:9 touchscreen is the biggest I have ever used, and the touch operation is smooth as silk. While HD Icon boasts 720p playback and recording, the screen itself is only 360x640 pixels - the same as Nokia's new N97 - but the AMOLED technology makes this one simply stunning to look at, giving bright, clear lines from any angle.

And the big screen is perfect for the HD Icon's next big feature: an 8MP camera with 720p video recording. Now the 8MP camera on its own is an impressive thing - autofocus works a treat and menus are delightfully simple to use on the touchscreen. It's let down by an LED flash which could use an upgrade and the lack of a lens cover (you've got an HD camera here, you don't want that lens getting scratched in your pocket!), so it's not really a replacement for a standalone digital camera but it is up there with the best cameraphones on the market. Smile detection and geotagging are handy additions too.

Video recording is a snap, and the HD Icon's 720p recording resolution is simply brilliant. You can record HD videos up to 2GB in size (about 30-40 minutes) and it really is as simple as hitting the record button. An additional treat: If you own a DLNA-enabled TV, you can stream those HD videos to your screen over your home Wi-Fi network. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is hoped to become the standard for connecting all your digital devices over Wi-Fi, so you can stream media content from mobiles, PCs and TVs etc around your home. Support for DLNA is growing, but is hardly mainstream yet - it might be a great feature which you never get to use with the HD Icon. Regardless, you can always just use a TV-out cable to watch content on a big screen.

But the Samsung HD Icon is about more than just the impressive camera. It's got simple-to-use multimedia features: music player with extensive format support, video player which plays DivX and WMV files as well as mp4 (another handy feature), and so much storage space for all your media content - with 16GB onboard and an expandable microSDHC slot up to 32GB, meaning up to 48GB of storage!
The HD Icon can fit more than pretty much any other phone out there.

The HD Icon actually runs Nokia's latest Symbian OS, featured on the new N97 and 5800 Xpress Music. Ironically, the Samsung runs Symbian better than either of the Nokias - menus are a cinch to navigate and the device responds quickly to every touch. But Symbian is showing its age - the web browser is dated, and while you have the option of using email it's not a pleasant experience. But the up-side is you're able to access all Symbian apps (there are plenty of them on the internet), it's just a shame Samsung doesn't have a one-stop app store like Apple's or Google's Android Marketplace.

Other features include GPS, navigation and a digital compass, as well as Samsung's TouchWiz UI which allows you to drop widgets on your home screen - giving easy access to music players, Facebook, YouTube, radio etc. There is also a simple podcast app, instant messaging, and location-based services - none of which are extraordinary, but all useable.

Cars / Nissan Mixim Concept
« on: January 18, 2010, 07:09:59 PM »
Nissan Mixim Concept

The Nissan Mixim, a one-off compact concept car powered by a pair of innovative “Super Motor” electric motor/generators, makes its first U.S. appearance as part of the Michelin Challenge Design™ display at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, January 11 – 24, 2010. Now in its ninth year, the Michelin Challenge Design celebrates original creative thinking and innovation in vehicle design.

The Mixim has the same wheelbase as a production Nissan cube®, but is more than 11 inches shorter, nearly 10 inches lower and four inches wider – giving it a distinctive, aerodynamic coupe shape. The exterior styling is highlighted by LED driving lights, a wraparound windscreen inspired by the visor of a safety helmet, a dramatic angular slash running through the center of the doors and triangular side windows that link the sloping roofline with the sweptback rear hatchback.

Inside, the innovative design continues with 3-person seating – with the driver sitting in the center position flanked by passenger seats on each side. An occasional fourth seat is available in the large rear cargo area. The Mixim’s steering wheel and gauges are inspired by computer game interface design, reflecting the young, technology engaged and connected target audience for the vehicle. Diamond-shaped styling cues are also featured inside and out.

Equally engaging and innovative is Mixim’s advanced EV underpinnings – which include the use of compact lithium-ion batteries for an extended driving range and separate electric motor/generators driving the front and rear axles. This layout also gives the lightweight, all-wheel drive Mixim impressive acceleration and overall performance.

Tech Lounge / Toshiba's ZX900 Cell TV
« on: January 16, 2010, 07:24:19 PM »
Toshiba's ZX900 Cell TV

Toshiba's ZX900 Cell TV has been humbled slightly for its market debut. Still, the processing power is what's really on display here, and Toshiba claims that it's packed 143 times the processing power over existing televisions. That processing
makes way for Toshiba's Resolution+ upscaling, a 480Hz frame rate (completely ready for 3D), and some home media server capabilities as well. The centerpiece is the Net TV applications, which include Netflix, VUDU, CinemaNow and Pandora, and there's 802.11n WiFi and 1TB of HDD for streaming and storage. There's also mention of video phone capability, but it's unclear if has a built-in webcam (doubtful) or if you've got to bring your own USB number. Unfortunately, the biggest draw of this TV in its Japanese incarnation is its eight tuners, and for whatever reason that special distinction has been removed from this US version. The 55-inch and 65-inch displays use KIRA2 LED-backlit displays with 512 zones of localized dimming, and just in case this was wasn't enough, the sets have built-in Wireless HD and to connect the Cell-packing set-top box to the display wire-free. Of course, once you involve a set-top box you're kind of nullifying some of the magic of building a TV "with a Cell processor," but we'll let it slide. Just this once, Toshiba. Both TVs will be out "later this year" for an undisclosed, sure-to-be-huge price.

Netgear PTV1000 Push 2 TV WiFi video card

Its long said that wireless video streaming direct from a laptop is one of our dream gadgets, and while most of the gear we've

seen is based on Wireless USB, it looks like Netgear's trying something a little different: this PTV1000 Push 2 TV Adapter just hit the FCC database, and it looks to send video from your laptop to your TV over WiFi. It's apparently built on an upcoming Intel standard called Wireless Display that requires a Core i3, i5, or i7 processor with integrated GMA graphics and
Windows 7, but nothing's been officially announced yet -- and what little info we have isn't great, as the docs warn users that Wireless Display is unsecured and won't play all DVDs or Blu-rays. That's not a huge problem, we suppose -- all we want to do is beam a Hulu window to our TV simply and easily.

Alienware M17x Gaming Laptop

With an Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9300, dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M GPUs, and 1TB of hard-drive space, this is about as

powerful as laptops get without resorting to stuffing actual desktop parts in a chassis (as with the AVAdirect Clevo D900F).

We often point to less expensive gaming laptops, such as the Asus W90 or the Gateway FX P-series as offering a better bang for

your buck, but if you want the very best, and are willing to pay for it, dropping several Gs on the new Alienware M17x will

make you the coolest nerd on your block.

"SEE THROUGH" TYRES !

Radical new tyre design by Michelin.
The next generation of tyres.
released at the Philadelphia car show.

Those are spokeslike connections to the inner part of the tyre from the outside tread 'wrap'! Next picture shows what they

look like in motion...

These tyres are airless. They are scheduled to be on the market soon. Bad news for law enforcement as spike strips will not

work on these.

Think of the impact on existing technology:
A. No more air valves
B. No more air compressors
C. No more flat tyres
D. No more puncture repairs
E. No more jacks or spares required.

Cars / Citroen C7 Car
« on: January 15, 2010, 05:38:48 PM »
Citroen C7 Car

The Citroen C7 concept was created by Seojun, a design student at Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. The C7 is a luxury 4-door, 4-seat saloon with coupe-like proportions for the near future, 2010 to be exact. And although the concept C7 stands no chance of production in this particular form it is a stylish design which attempts to predict the future of Citroen design.

The exterior design of the Citroen C7 concept is graceful and flowing with a tapering rear section. Up front the grille of the C7 does not feature the new distinctive elongated chrome badge which has become standard across much of the Citroen lineup.
The rising line of the side windows gives the concept a sense of motion even when stationary, and helps to give the driver and front seat passenger a better field of vision while also giving the rear seat passengers a sense of privacy. Entry to the Citroen C7 is through conventional front doors and rear hinged rear doors. The rear doors are cleverly disguised thanks to the single-piece design of the door handles positioned where the front and rear doors meet. Inside the Citroen C7 concept is ample space for four adults, the swiveling front passenger seat can be turned through 180 degrees to face the rear seats.

News Khabran / Sikh Temple put on fire- 13/01/10
« on: January 14, 2010, 04:14:05 AM »
CRANBOURNE’S Sikh community says it is under attack after yesterday’s deliberately lit fire in a partially-built Lynbrook temple.

Police are still investigating the blaze, which started at about 12.30am inside the Nanaksar Sikh Temple.

It is the latest in a string of incidents at the Evans Rd site during the past 12 months, including graffiti, theft, break-ins and petty vandalism.

Speaking to the Leader, Raj Singh said the community was “angry and very upset.’’

“Racist sentiment seems to be boiling over at the moment and it looks to us as if we are being targeted,” Mr Singh said.

“We’re a peace-loving people. We believe all religions are good and we all worship the same one God. We just want to be abel to live in peace.”

Mr Singh said the damage was negligible.

“It is the psychological damage that is the real concern,’’ he said.

“To think that the surrounding community is targeting us like this is extremely upsetting to us.’’

Mr Singh said the 900-strong congregation ultimately hoped to build a school and retirement village on the 13ha site, making it a self-contained community.

“We want to be a part of the Cranbourne community. This is our home now. We’ve been here since 1988,’’ he said.

Builder Paul Birch said he was disgusted and angered by the “mindless destruction.’’

“There’s just no logic to it. They are harmless people,’’ Mr Birch said.

“We will be looking into security guards or dogs to put an end to this once and for all.’’

Police are urging anyone with information to call Casey CIU Det-Sen-Constable Paul Stowe on 9705 3111

Cars / Peugeot SR1 Concept
« on: January 09, 2010, 07:27:59 PM »

Peugeot SR1 Concept

French automaker Peugeot will pull the wraps off a brand-new concept vehicle called the SR1 at the Geneva Motor Show later

this year. Unlike a number of recent Peugeot cars and concepts, the SR1 isn't hallmarked by quirky, love-it-or-hate-it

styling. Instead, we see a somewhat traditional long-hood, short-deck profile with some interesting details, such as the

creased indentation in the doors that's echoed in both the front and rear fascias. Also note the redesigned Lion logo, which

we surmise will show up on all future Peugeots from here on out.

Power for the SR1 (which, of course, has nothing at all to do with the Corvette ZR1) comes courtesy of Peugeot's HYbrid4

technology, which pairs a small 1.6-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine powering the front wheels with a 95-horsepower

electric motor at the rear. The all-wheel drive, through-the-road hybrid system will make its production debut in 2011 inside

the 3008 crossover, with other models to follow not long after that.

Other concept-appropriate bits and pieces include a new removable plastic roof panel using technology that's borrowed from the

world of sailing, a three-seat layout with the third passenger behind the twin front seats and instrumentation that pairs

futuristic crystal tubes displaying current fuel consumption and remaining range with a classic timepiece designed by Bell &

Ross. Continuing the old versus new theme are black nickel and satin chrome trim with traditional wood and leather inlays.

With 313 combined horsepower, fuel mileage estimated at 57.7 mpg (European, 48 miles per gallon U.S.) and carbon emissions of

just 119 grams per kilometer, the Peugeot SR1 ought to be a mean, green performer. Plus, its speed-sensitive four-wheel

steering and lightweight structure should equal formidable handling prowess. Of course, we may never know for sure, as this

car, though signaling Peugeot's new styling direction, is nothing more than a concept at this point.

Ward's Auto has released its annual list of Ten Best Engines for the new year, and our

first assessment is that it's just as interesting for what isn't present as for what
