Nissan Juke

Sneaked from its covers this week in Europe and destined for its official launch at next month's Geneva motor show, the son-of-Dualis is claimed to be part SUV, part sports car.  It is capable, says an optimistic Nissan, of  breathing "new life into the traditionally conservative" small car segment and is able to give buyers "a funky alternative to the conventional urban hatchback". Which is exactly what the slow-selling Dualis was charged with.

The sole diesel is an 81kW/240Nm 1.5-litre dCi common-rail turbo-diesel with two 1.6-litre petrols - a turbocharged, direct injection version with 140kW/240Nm that Nissan says has the same performance as its 2.5-litre engine and a naturally-aspirated 86kW version.

The 2WD model turbo petrol as a six-speed manual transmission while a CVT transmission with a six-speed manual mode will be available on the engine's AWD model. The unboosted 1.6-litre petrol is available either with a five-speed manual or the CVT and the diesel gets only a six-speed manual.

Main Attractions of Australia

Uluru

Located in Australia’s Red Centre, Uluru/Ayers Rock can be accessed by an easy 40 minute flight from Alice Springs or as part of a 5-day Red Centre Way self-drive adventure.

Arguably Australia’s most famous natural icon, Uluru/Ayers Rock is best visited at sunrise or sunset. Seeing this 348-metre tall natural wonder glow in the changing sunlight is mesmerizing.

As ruggedly beautiful as it is culturally significant, visitors to Uluru/Ayers Rock are entranced by the unmistakeable spirituality of the region. See Uluru through the eyes of its traditional Aboriginal owners, the Anangu, by joining a cultural tour.

The adventure experiences on offer here are not for the faint-hearted. Get an Uluru experience with a difference and trek the 9-km Uluru base walk, take to the skies in a helicopter, jump on the back of a camel or feel the wind in your hair with a ride on a Harley Davidson.

Until recently, this monumental landmark was known as Ayers Rock, as named by European explorer William Gosse in 1873 and often misspelt as Ayres Rock. Today Uluru is jointly managed by the Anangu people and Parks Australia.

Twelve Appostles

The Twelve Apostles are giant rock stacks that rise majestically from the Southern Ocean and are the central feature of the rugged Port Campbell National Park.

The Twelve Apostles have been created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland that began 10–20 million years ago. The stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs. The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 45 metres high were left isolated from the shore.

Sunrise and sunset offer particularly impressive views as the Twelve Apostles change colour from dark and foreboding in shadow to brilliant sandy yellow under a full sun.

The Twelve Apostles are located just east of Port Campbell, along the Great Ocean Road. Parks Victoria has built boardwalks, tracks, and viewing areas to ensure you get spectacular views of the Twelve Apostles.

The Three Sisters

Did you know The Three Sisters are 922, 918 & 906 metres tall, respectively. That's over 3000 feet above sea level!

The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, 'Meehni', 'Wimlah' and Gunnedoo' lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe.

These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry.

The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle.

As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to  return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come.

Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is one of Australia's great scenic treasures and a must for anyone interested in travel to wilderness destinations.

Located 110 km (70 miles) south-west of Adelaide and easily accessible by Ferry or Plane. A mix of attractive small townships and fascinating wilderness;

Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island.

Due to its size and the number of things to do and discover, it is impossible to see it all in a day or 2. If you only have one or  two days available on your itinerary, choose places from the things that interest you most.

Knowledge / Blow off Valve and its working
« on: March 29, 2010, 08:48:04 PM »

Blow Off Valve working

Turbochargedengines are commonly used for better performance but tuning houses and car enthusiasts around the world are trying, with the help of a number of tweaks, to obtain even more. One of these enhancements that can be applied to turbocharged powertrains exclusively is the blow-off valve (BOV), an upgrade that can sometime prove to be more useful for those people looking to get a hissing sound out of their ordinary engine. But let's take all these things one by one.

First of all, what is it? The blow-off valve is a separate part that is supposed to be mounted in the intake plumbing between the turbocharger compressor and the throttle plate. Just like its name suggests, it blows off the pressure in the intake system of a turbocharged unit.

Secondly, its role. Such a system is specifically aimed at helping the turbocharged engine in question to maintain the same rev for a longer period (less than a second) when changing shifts. This way, the driver can get instant boost, reducing the lag and giving the optimal power just when needed. Other tasks include reducing wear of the engine and, more importantly for some people interested in tuning, creating a hissing sound generated every time the driver changes gears.

That's right, some car enthusiasts are only interested in mounting a blow-off valve just for the sound it makes, with several tuning houses around the world designing several aftermarket parts that even amplify the sound.

Getting back to the way the BOV works, it does exactly what its name suggests: it blows off the pressure in the intake system. This way, it keeps the turbocharger spinning when the throttle plate is fully closed. For example, when the driver wants to change gears and releases the throttle pedal. The direct result is that the turbocharger - which is still spinning thanks to the air flow - is ready to provide the optimal power once the driver presses the throttle pedal once again.

The result of this blow-off - or the pressure release if you prefer - is exactly the sound we told you before.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately, using a BOV has a few disadvantages too. Besides the horrifying sound that might scare the hell out of somebody walking down the street, the air that circulates between through the compressor and the blow-off valve might become heated and thus have detrimental effects on the performance of the engine.

Furthermore, an incorrectly mounted blow-off valve might reduce the final figures of the car and even increase the lag when the driver changes gears. Additionally, in case the valve doesn't handle the pressure as it should, it could lead to other engine damages.

A blow-off valve is usually priced from $100 to more than one thousand dollars, obviously depending on the manufacturer/tuning house. However, for those of you who are looking to buy one of these just for the sound, a cheaper alternative is also available: a so-called fake blow-off valve that does nothing more than to use the air pressure to generate a different sound, other than the one emitted by the engine.

Important!

What's important is to avoid confusing the BOV with anti-lag systems, such as the ones seen in motorracing. The anti-lag systems are more complex and rely on a mixture of air and fuel that reaches the exhaust tubes usually unburned. Obviously, this usually results in an explosion - due to the high temperature in the exhaust system - which keeps the turbo turning and thus, provide a boost to the driver even at engine idle speeds.

Obviously, for an anti-lag system to work properly, the car needs to be equipped with a high-performance exhaust system that can handle the explosions and is especially tweaked to direct the pressure to the turbo system and keep it spinning.

That being said, the blow-off valve might be a pretty nice upgrade for your turbocharged engine but even if it might boost performance a little bit, don't expect your car to fly like a rocket.

Turbocharger and its working

The Working Principles of a Turbocharger

In an internal combustion engine where there is a need to increase the power, a turbocharger comes in application. In order to accomplish this, the turbocharger increases the mass flow rate of air entering the engine by the turbine action driven by it’s exhaust. It is widely applied in aircrafts, automobiles and motorcycles.

Turbocharger design and function

The turbocharger is like a miniature gas turbine, it is a small radial fan driven by the forward motion of the engine exhaust. Comprising the turbocharger are the turbine and the compressor sharing a single shaft. When the exhaust gasses enter, the fan rotates which drives a compressor. Air is then squeezed by the compressor before being delivered to the engine air intake manifold. Because air is compressed, the engine could then take in greater amounts of air to the cylinders. Usually the engine takes in air through a vacuum created by the downward stroke of the cylinder. The normal air pressure is at 14.7 psi and there is a limit to the pressure difference across the intake valves resulting in a limited air mass flow rate. In order to increase the intake, pressure must then be increased. In this way additional oxygen to the engine makes it possible to burn more fuel which increases the power of the engine. Increase air pressure is possible with the turbocharger application.

Turbochargers, although applies the same as superchargers except for small variations. Superchargers, particularly Centrifugal superchargers were spun by the rotation of the engine’s crankshaft. This made turbochargers more efficient in terms of recycling energy loss through the exhaust.

Although the turbocharger consists of a turbine and a compressor, several working components actually comprise it. The turbine and the impeller are contained in their own housing. The housings fitted around the compressor impeller and turbine directs the flow of gasses through the wheels. The motion of the gasses causes the impeller to spin. In this case the size of the impeller wheel dictates the amount of gas it could take. The single shaft connecting the turbine to the compressor is housed in the center hub rotating assembly (CHRA). The CHRA also contains bearing to minimized friction, lubrication and in some cases the turbocharger cooling system; water cooled models have entry and exit points for the engine coolants to cycle. Devices such as waste gates then control the spin of the turbine.

Front Mount Intercooler

You probably have seen cars driving around with this sort of arrangement under the front grill. This is called a Front mount Intercooler to cool down the turbo of the petrol engine.

World's largest Cruise Ship

Oasis of the Seas

Review

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, has been the most anticipated new-build to debut since Cunard's Queen Mary 2. Its innovations -- such as the first-ever Boardwalk and

Central Park at sea, which uniquely occupy space that's carved out of the middle of the ship -- are already legendary.

The ship features new-to-Royal Caribbean types of eateries that range from spa cuisine to elaborately staged food and wine pairings. Its entertainment district, a hub for late owls, offers ice skating and

disco, comedy and jazz, and a three-tiered theater that features a 90-minute version of "Hairspray," the popular Tony Award-winning Broadway show. Particularly dazzling is the ship's AquaTheater, with its

deepest-pool-at-sea, which serves as a platform for performers such as divers and synchronized swimmers.

Innovations on Oasis of the Seas are by no means limited to passenger-friendly advances. Royal Caribbean also has introduced a number of new technical and environmental tools that enable the ship to be more

efficient and more eco-responsible.
