Earthquake hits New Zealand-22/02/2011 February 22nd, 2011 This morning's earthquake has left Christchurch cathedral in ruins. Photo: Oliver Winkler AN earthquake that rocked the Canterbury region of New Zealand this morning has left the Kiwi population on the Gold Coast concerned for their loved ones. Early reports suggest the quake measured 6.3 on the richter scale and has caused widespread destruction to the city centre. The quake struck at 12:51pm local time and was centered 10km south of the city at a depth of 5kms, according to GeoNet. The New Zealand Herald reported users on Twitter said the quake was felt as far away as Wellington and Dunedin. Phone lines and electricity lines were cut and Christchurch Hospital was being evacuated. Witnesses reported seeing buildings rocking back and forth during the quake, which lasted about a minute, with roads cracked and water mains burst. Last year the area was hit by a 7.0 magnitude quake, which caused widespread damage but no deaths. More details as they come to hand.
