News Khabran / Breast Milk Can Protect From Alzheimer's To Cancer?
« on: November 21, 2011, 05:14:19 PM »
It is already known to give babies the best start in life, but experts now say that breast milk may also hold the key to beating diseases -- from Alzheimer`s to cancer.
An international team says that breast milk contains stem cells that could potentially beat diseases from Alzheimer`s to cancer. The milk is rich in stem cells, which have chameleon-like properties found in those taken from embryos. The milk could provide a ready and ethical source of stem cells, which are widely seen as a "repair kit" due to their potential to turn into any cell type in the body.
Cancer, blindness, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson`s diseases and paralysis could all potentially be healed by the power of "master cells", say the scientists. Prof Foteini Hassiotou at the University of Western Australia, was quoted by the `Daily Mail ` newspaper as saying, "Breast milk offers a new exciting opportunity for stem cell therapies." However, Prof Chris Mason at University College London said more proof is needed that the cells are as versatile as billed, but added: "If they are truly embryonic, this will be another way of getting stem cells that would not raise ethical concerns."
Even if they do not turn out to be as versatile as hoped, said Newcastle University stem cell scientist Lyle Armstrong, a woman could still bank stem cells from her milk and use them to help in the treatment of a disease such as diabetes later in life. For instance, a woman could bank the stem cells from her milk and then use them to help in the treatment of a disease such as diabetes later in life.

News Khabran / US State Department Shows Pok As Part Of Pakisten
« on: November 21, 2011, 05:11:13 PM »
At a time when incorrect India maps are getting the goat of not just the government but also journalists, there is even more alarming news for India's strategic community.
The official website of US department of state, which handles foreign relations of the country, shows PoK as part of Pakistan, notwithstanding India's claim over the region. Under its A-Z list of countries, the website (www.state.gov), which has the catch line 'Diplomacy in Action', carries profiles and maps of all countries with which the US has diplomatic relations. In the case of India, however, the map differs from the official Indian map in that it completely ignores India's claim over PoK by not even acknowledging its disputed status.
Surprisingly, in the case of Aksai Chin region in the north which shares a boundary with China and is currently occupied by Beijing, the map carries a pointer which does mention 'Indian claim'. It's only in the case of PoK where it fails to take note of its disputed status and India's position. "It shows a distinct pro-Pakistan cartographic tilt that is inconsistent with the UN projection of the entire PoK (including Gilgit-Baltistan) as disputed,'' strategic affairs expert Brahma Chellaney said.
Former chief of joint intelligence committee and security expert S D Pradhan said the US needs to be careful about Indian sensitivities, particularly at a time when the two countries are working as strategic partners. "These maps do not reflect PoK either as a disputed area or as Indian territory and it's important that these inaccuracies are brought to the notice of people. This also reflects USA's soft policy towards Pakistan despite their knowledge that Pakistan Army and ISI are maintaining close links with terrorists and Taliban,'' Pradhan said. In the Pakistan map on the same website, PoK is shown as neatly ensconced in Pakistan with nothing to suggest its disputed status.
India has in the past had the same problem with organizations like Google but this is probably the first time that such an inaccuracy has come to light on a US government website. The common practice now among international news portals, like in the case of BBC, is to refer to the two sides of LoC as India-controlled Kashmir and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. In fact, in the recent past, most such cases of faulty Indian maps were reported from India's eastern border where Arunachal Pradesh was shown as part of China by private companies. In one such case recently, the Chinese ambassador to India Zhang Yan got into an altercation with an Indian journalist after the latter objected to the state being shown in China in a private firm's brochure.

News Khabran / Harsimrat Slams Centre On Farmers Woes
« on: November 21, 2011, 05:09:02 PM »
Bhatinda MP Harsimrat Badal slammed the UPA government at the Centre for all problems being faced by the farmers in the state.
Speaking during the National Convention of Farmers in Patiala — organised by the Consortium of Indian Farmers Association (CIFA) — Harsimrat rued the “step-motherly” treatment meted out to the farmers of a state, which she said contributed 60 per cent to the central pool, despite having three per cent of the total agricultural land in the country.
She also trained guns at state Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh, accusing him of being “indifferent” to the problems of the farmers. Earlier, Congress MP and Minister of State for External Affairs Perneet Kaur also addressed the convention. She promised to arrange a meeting of CIFA delegation with the prime minister regarding the problems being faced by farmers.

Even as the curtains came down on the Kabbadi World Cup, the Punjab Congress alleged that the sports department had “forced” managements of foreign teams in the tournament to include players with Punjabi origins in their teams.
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh claimed he is in possession of a CD that purportedly shows Sports director, Pargat Singh forcing the manager of the Australian team to include four players, with roots in Punjab, in his squad. The PCC President accused state government officials of forcing and bullying managements of the teams from other countries to include players with Punjabi origins in their respective teams.
He further said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his Deputy Chief Minister son Sukhbir Badal tried to gather crowds through the tournament and in the process indulged in all “the shameless acts to the extent of presiding over semi-nude dances themselves”. “It is for the first time that crowds were gathered at the time of elections by proxy in the name of kabbadi and semi-nude dances”, he said. Amarinder further hit out at the tournament and said the father-son duo were guilty of “self consolatory and self congratulatory boasts” in claiming that the tournament was a ‘world cup’.
“Instead of indulging in shameless boast, the father-son duo should rather feel ashamed over the sequence of events that were marked with shameful acts of semi-nude dances and dope scandals which made more news than anything else”, the PCC chief said. Questioning the claims of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal about the tournament being a world cup, he said it was a just a farce as most teams in the tournament like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy and Spain have not been recognised by their respective authorised sports bodies or Olympic committees, which is mandatory for any team claiming to represent its country.
Moreover, the former chief minister alleged that the tournament was used as an alibi to extort money from big industrial houses and groups in the name of sponsorships and the money was pocketed by the Badals. “The Badals-owned PTC got maximum money by way of having telecast rights as there is revenue from advertisements”, he said.

News Khabran / To Take On Badals In Gidderbaha,Among Cong Conteneders:
« on: November 21, 2011, 09:31:52 AM »
The fight in Gidderbaha cannot get bigger than this. Even as the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal may field someone from the family to take on family rebel Manpreet Badal in Gidderbaha, the Congress too has an ace up its sleeve, albeit a namesake — Amarinder Singh.
In 1967, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal contested from Gidderbaha for the first time and lost to former Congress CM Harcharan Singh Brar. Since then, he won the seat consecutively till 1987. The seat was passed on from Badal, who contested it five times, to Manpreet in the 1995 bypoll. Since then it has been won by Manpreet in subsequent polls.
He resigned this year following his ouster from the government and the party. In all these years, the faction-ridden Gidderbaha Congress won the family seat of the Badals only once, that too, when Akalis boycotted the polls in 1992. Midway during his tenure, Congress MLA Raghubir Singh had to resign following his conviction by the Supreme Court in a criminal case and Gidderbaha went for a bypoll in 1995.
The Congress fielded his son, who lost to first-timer Manpreet. In subsequent polls, Raghubir Singh lost twice — in 2002 and then in 2007, as a fallout of one of the Congress contenders, Sant Brar, contesting as an Independent and polling 28,000 votes against Raghubir’s 34,000. With no contender who can stake a claim to the seat on past victories, the Congress is keen to field a youth leader and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring — a All India Youth Congress general secretary — is the frontrunner. Warring, who started his political career under Congress Working Committee member Jagmeet Brar, also has the support of state Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh.
A Bachelor of Arts from Panjab University, Chandigarh, Raja has no family history of politics. He says his first brush with politics was during his college days in Chandigarh during Haryana Congress minister Randeep Surjewala hey days in Panjab University. “I became the Punjab Youth Congress block president and later, the district president of Muktsar,” he says.
In the Congress rally last Thursday, Raja did all it takes to clinch the party ticket. His pictures lined up the road leading to the rally ground and he squatted on the dias before state party in-charge Gulchain Singh Charak, Amarinder and Brar for that perfect picture opportunity to be seen as the choice of the party top brass. But it may not be a smooth sail to the party ticket. Other than Raghubir Singh, there are other claimants, such as Sant Brar who may yet again contest as an Independent if denied a ticket.
There is also Harcharan Singh -- uncle of Raja -- the only candidate on whom there could be a consensus as he has an non-controversial image. Another claimant is Malkit Singh, who lost to Manpreet in 1997. “There was no beating Manpreet. He won with a bigger margin each time, as the Congress votes were divided. But this time, it is just the opposite. The different Congress factions have united and the Akali votes have split. This division of votes will go in our favour. We have taken an oath in the historical Kauni village gurdwara that we will stand united behind whoever the party decides to field from the constituency,” says Gurdas Girdhar, the president of District Congress Committee, Muktsar.
But unlike the “Maharaja” he is seen with in pictures, this Raja is still a politician in the making. He may not be able to tackle opposition from within the party, even though he did manage to make the right noises during his brief speech. “In 40 years of Badal family rule, Gidderbaha — their home turf — has become the cancer belt of the state but has no good hospitals. There is no industry or facilities like sports stadiums for the youth. Manpreet is remembering martyr Bhagat Singh suddenly after 46 years of his birth. I challenge the CM to contest from Gidderbaha. The stronger the Akali Dal candidate, the better. But no Badal will win again from here,” he said.
But Manpreet contends that in a three-corner contest, he gains. “We were Akali Dal’s best ammunition. The Congress is only looking united till the ticket is announced. Gidderbaha will witness either a pro-Manpreet or anti-Manpreet vote,” he says. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, in his sangat darshan programmes in Gidderbaha, takes a satirical dig at his cousin’s choice of name for his party. “The acronym for Manpreet’s party is PPP, which is what I once saw written outside a theka (liquor shop),” he says while referring to drinking, the word’s other connotation in Punjabi parlance.

News Khabran / Badals Fail To Impress As Kabaddi World Cup Ends
« on: November 21, 2011, 09:26:13 AM »
The Badals showcase event, this year’s edition of Kabaddi World Cup, came to an end but neither Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal nor his son and deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal left any impression on the 23,000 strong capacity crowd at th Guru Nanak Dev Stadium here.
While the senior Badal merely congratulated the public and his son for making the event a huge success, Sukhbir stuck to last year’s speech and told the people to “make kabaddi the number one sport not only in Punjab but at the international level”. The stadium, which wore a deserted look while the play offs for the third place were on, soon filled to capacity before the final and the arrival of the Badals. Sources said at least 200 buses were pressed into service by the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) to bring people from the villages.
Besides the Badals, senior Akali leaders Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Sikander Singh Maluka, Balwinder Singh Bhunder, Bikramjit Singh Majithia and former prime minister of Pakistan Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and other foreign diginitaries were present for the closing function that was held under the cloud of doping. The Desi Boyz star cast comprising Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone and Chitranganda Singh enthralled the audience too.

News Khabran / Ahead Of Assembly Poll, Politicians Woo Deras
« on: November 20, 2011, 12:23:39 AM »
In run-up to assembly elections, it’s time to crack political deals in Punjab. Apart from making all out efforts to woo voters, politicians are now making rounds of various spiritual ‘deras’ (bodies) seeking the votes of followers.
The latest to join the league was People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) chief Manpreet Badal who recently met Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the controversial head of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda.
Manpreet’s visit comes days after Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Capt Amarinder Singh visited the dera on November 12. The PPP president, it is learnt, had a 10-minute meeting with the dera chief, followed by another one with the dera’s political advisory committee (Punjab wing). Both Manpreet and the dera representatives concerned refused to comment on what transpires at the meeting.
Ram Singh, one of the six members of the advisory committee, said there was no discussion about elections or even politics for that matter. He said Manpreet raised issues like corruption, drug-addiction and unemployment, issues about which even the dera was concerned. However, sources said a senior member of the dera’s committee, who is a resident of Husnar village in Gidderbaha, played an important role in facilitating Manpreet’s visit.
“There is nothing wrong if a political leader visits a dera. Being a secular party, the PPP has high regard for every religious sect provided it works for the society’s betterment,” said Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon, PPP vice-president. Ram Singh said several other political leaders, including Amarinder Singh, had visited the dera in recent past. But, said sources, the dera would weigh various options before taking the final decision on whom to support in the elections.

News Khabran / Rbi Keeping An Eye On Rupee Depreciation
« on: November 20, 2011, 12:17:14 AM »
The Reserve Bank of India is ‘keeping an eye' on the rupee depreciating to a new 32-month low against the U.S. dollar, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said.
“The RBI is keeping an eye on it (depreciation of rupee). They are watching the situation at the appropriate level,” Mr Mukherjee told reporters on the sidelines of the Vatsalya Mela 2011 here. His comments came a day after the rupee plunged to a 32-month low of 51.35 on Friday on persisting demand for the U.S. currency from banks and importers.
On being asked what would be a comfortable rate of exchange and the likelihood of intervention by the central bank, Mr. Mukherjee said: “I am not guessing anything and I am not finding what is comfortable level. I am depending on the advice of the RBI.” Earlier speaking at the concluding function, Mr. Mukherjee expressed concern over the declining sex ratio.
He said that on the one hand women were marching ahead in various fields, which was a matter of great satisfaction, while on the other declining number of girl child births was a matter of grave concern. He assured the Ministry of Women and Child Development that there would be no dearth of financial assistance as far as the schemes and projects of women and child welfare were concerned. Minister of State for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath said the Ministry was working on a proposal to provide monetary grant to pregnant women to improve reproductive and child health.

News Khabran / Lather, Mahar In Finals Of Boxing Fed Cup
« on: November 20, 2011, 12:08:53 AM »
Sonia Lather, Vinita Mahar, Mamta and Monica Saun, among others, advanced to the summit clash of the Federation Cup Women's Boxing Championship.
On the third day of the tournament, Uttarakhand and All India Police emerged as front-runners. Five boxers secured a final spot for the host state, while four made it through for AIP. The final of the fly-weight class will see National Championship silver medalist Sonia Lather Singh of Andhra Pradesh lock horns with local girl Vinita Mahar, who bagged a bronze at the National Games earlier this year.
While Lather upset National Games gold medalist Vanlal Duati of Mizoram in an easy fly-weight bout, Vinita had to dig deep against Saroj of Haryana. Lather dominated proceedings throughout the bout and went on to secure the final spot with a 17:6 victory. Vinita, on the other hand, was given a run for her money. She had a one-point deficit after the third round, but the teenage boxer managed to squeeze a two-point advantage in the final round owing to some feisty combinations. She won on points, 14:13.
Former youth national champion Monica Saun of Uttarakhand hammered Renu Jaiswal of Delhi on her way to the title clash of the light-welter division. She will take on Suman of the All India Police team in the final. Suman beat Namita Kachuari of Assam. Mamata from Manipur ousted National Games bronze medalist A Punyavathi of Andhra Pradesh in a light fly-weight bout. The 20-year-old boxer, who bagged a bronze at the recently-concluded 12th Senior Nationals, put up a stunning performance against the Andhra girl who seemed completely out of sorts. Mamata led throughout the eight minutes of play, never allowing Punyavathi to set into a rhythm. She won 16:6 on points to set up the summit clash with Krishna Thapa of Madhya Pradesh.
Thapa, a silver medal winner at the Senior Nationals, beat P Nirosha of Mizoram. Nirosha was no match against the more attacking style of the 20-year-old. Thapa was leading 24:12 in the fourth round when the referee decided to stop the bout. Reigning national champion in super heavyweight division, Kavita Chahal of the All India Police team had little trouble drubbing BV Padmavathi of Andhra Pradesh. She was leading 6:0 in the first round when the referee intervened to stop the fight. Chahal will go up against Poonam Vishnoi of Uttarakhand in the summit clash.
The Federation Cup Women's Boxing Championship, being held in Nainital, brings out the best state and board teams from the domestic arena and provides a perfect opportunity for amateur boxers to showcase their talent. The top teams from the National Champions are invited to partake in the contest along with the host team.
