Pakistani Hindu and Sikh families, who have been targetted by Taliban for failing to pay 'religious' tax, left their homes and moved to Punjab province to take shelter even as Pakistan government on Saturday dismissed India's "verbal demarche" on the issue.
More than 150 Sikhs and Hindu families in Pakistan's North Western Frontier Province and tribal areas have moved to Punjab for shelter as the US branded the Taliban as "ruthless killers" for targetting the minority Sikh community. "So far, over 150 Sikh and Hindu families have arrived at Gurdwara Panja Sahib in Hasan Abdal and Rawalpindi from places like Buner, Swat and Aurakzai Agency," Evacuee Trust Property Board Chairman Asif Hashmi said.
"We have made arrangements for accommodation, food and security for the displaced Sikh and Hindu families in all five major gurdwaras in Punjab," Hashmi said.
Amid expression of concern by India over the fate of the minority community in NWFP after the imposition of 'jiziya' on non-Muslims, Pakistan's Foreign Office dismissed India's "verbal demarche".
"Pakistan is fully cognisant of the issue of the Sikhs and of the welfare of all its citizens, especially the minorities," Basit said.
Sikhs and Hindus had to leave their homes and properties in Buner and Swat in the NWFP after the Pakistani security forces stepped-up operation last week to flush out the Taliban from the Swat Valley.
Diplomatic sources said the issue of Sikhs being forced out of their homes in Pakistan's Aurakzai tribal agency after they failed to pay 'jiziya' or tax imposed on non-Muslims was taken up yesterday with the Foreign Office by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. It was also taken up with the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi by the External Affairs Ministry.
Branding Taliban as "ruthless killers," the US has said Taliban militants' demand for tax from the minority Sikh community was not surprising and provided all the more reason for international community to cooperate to rid the region of extremists.
"I've heard reports about that. It doesn't surprise me. I mean, these are ruthless killers, the Taliban," State Department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters in Washington. "They (the Taliban) will do anything they can to upset Pakistan's and Afghanistan's fragile democracies," he said.
Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesman Basit said Pakistan had responded to India's "verbal demarche" on the issue by making it clear that the Sikhs in this country are Pakistani citizens and are of "no concern of India."
Sikhs have been asked to pay Rs 50 million a year by the local Taliban, who have destroyed their houses, forcing the minority community to move out of the Aurakzai agency where they have lived for centuries.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (KP) — Respect for Guru Granth Sahib Campaign, North America was notified that a Sindhi temple based in Jackson Heights, NY was doing parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib alongside pictures and statues of Hindu deities in the same complex. Satya Narayan Mandir which organizers claim is “a place to worship together” also offers services such as Sehaj Path Sahib and Akhand Path Sahib at the mandir and at homes of devotees.
Panthic maryada and Sri Akal Takht Sahib guidelines forbid the parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at any places of worship other than Sikh Gurdwaras. The practice of installing Guru Granth Sahib along with pictures and statues is also unacceptable, as Guru Granth Sahib’s message clearly condemns the worship or reverence of artifacts. It has also come to the notice of the Respect for Guru Granth Sahib Campaign that statues of Guru Nanak Dev Ji are also installed at the temple.
In addition to Sikh ceremonies, the temple also offers other services which are not in line with Gurmat, and also makes its facilities available to the community at ‘reasonable rates.’ Discourses on Bhagwad Gita are delivered daily at the premises, while asa-ki-vaar and hanuman chalisa are recited on a weekly basis. On a monthly basis, the temple also organized ‘Satya Naryan Puja’ and ‘Bahrano’ (special services for the full moon).
Hindu baptism, ‘mundan’ (hair shaving) and other rituals are also carried out at the temple’s premises.
The Respect for Guru Granth Sahib Committee, North America (www.satkar.org) has appealed to the New York Sangat to contact the Sindhi Temple and remove parkash of Guru Granth Sahib from this Hindu mandir immediately and assure that such beadbi is not repeated again at that mandir.
It should be mentioned that the Sikh Community does not oppose the ceremonies of other communities and faiths but the reverence of Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the utmost important concern of the Sikhs and Sikh practices do not allow the parkash of Guru Sahib at Hindu mandirs.

Pakistan, UK united in war on terror

Gives SIT three months to submit report

Narendra ModiThe Supreme Court today directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that probed the 2002 Godhra train fire and the subsequent riots to investigate a complaint against Chief Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet colleagues and top police and administration officials that they had aided and abetted the mob violence.
A Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Asok Kumar Ganguly said the SIT, headed by former CBI Director RK Raghavan, would submit its report within three months. The Bench issued the order on a petition filed by one Jakia Nasim Ahesan, widow of a riot victim. Senior counsel Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioner, relied on the affidavits of RB Srikumar, who was ADGP of Gujarat at the time of the riots, filed before the Nanavati Commission, which had also gone into the issue.

Oil falls in Asia on swine flu fall-out

Harcharan Singh 19, of Nankana Sahib is the first Pakistani Sikh in the country’s 58-year history who has been commissioned in the Pakistan Army as an officer. The minorities in Pakistan are allowed to sit in all examinations, including the one conducted by Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB), but neither a Hindu nor a Sikh had ever been selected for army service since the country’s inception. Though, many Christians have served in the army.
Harcharan was skeptical in 2007 as he participated in the ISSB’s preliminary tests, thinking that such examinations were not meant for (Sikhs) as he could not get through the initial phase last year. “This year, I got through the preliminary phase and appeared in the ISSB examination. However, I was mentally prepared to settle for admission in BA (Architecture) in the National College of Arts”.
“It was the happiest moment of my life when I came to know about my selection in the army. I am privileged to have this honour which none of my predecessors could ever achieve,” Harcharan told Dawn.
Harcharan, who passed his FSc (pre-engineering) in 2004 with 726 marks, wants the government to open the doors for his community to the law enforcement agencies as well.
Harcharan passed his matriculation from the Government Gurunanak High School, Nankana Sahib, with 677 marks. He says that his school should be equipped with a modern laboratory and a competent teaching staff.
He says when his fellow Sikhs in Nankana Sahib learned about his selection in the army they really felt proud of him. It has also changed their perception. Now they believe that young Sikhs have a fair chance to join the country’s most prestigious institutions.
Having a younger brother and three elder sisters, he wants his brother to follow suit. He says after the death of his father, a shopkeeper, some seven years ago, the credit of their education goes to his mother. “My mother wants me to earn a good name for the country.”
He says that his family migrated to the Northern Areas at the time of partition and in 1970s shifted to Nankana Sahib.

Sikhs living in Pakistans Orakzai Agency have reportedly paid Rs 20 million as jazia to the Taliban, a tax previously levied by Mughal rulers on non-Muslims to exempt them from military service and protect their person in the sub-continent.
