Umm-ul-Momineen
Hazrat Zainab Bint Jahsh (RA)
Great woman in Islam
A Brief History
Her name and lineage
Her full name was Zainab Ummul-Hikam. Her father’s name was Hajash and her mother’s name was Umaimah, who was a daughter of Abdul Muttalib, the grand father of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). Zainab (Radi’Allahu Anha) was therefore a first cousin of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).
Marriage to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
Her first marriage was to the adopted son of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam), Zaid Bin Harithah (Radi’Allahu Anhu). After one year of marriage, however, Zaid (Radi’Allahu Anhu) complained to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) that his wife used hard language with him and he could not continue with her. He wished to divorce her. In spite of efforts, this wed-lock could not continue, therefore Zaid (Radi’Allahu Anhu) divorced her.
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was reluctant to marry her because Zaid (Radi’Allahu Anhu) was his adopted son and a divorced wife of an adopted son was looked upon as shameful under Arab traditions. The following verse was then revealed, “And you (the Holy Prophet) were concealing in your heart what Allah was going to reveal; and you feared the people whereas it is Allah alone whom you should fear”. (Surah Ahzaab, verse 5).
Upon receiving the proposal from Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam), she replied, ‘I can give no opinion until I have consulted Allah, my Lord.’ Meanwhile the Divine order was revealed in the following words, ‘When Zaid severed his connection with her, We married her to you’. They were therefore married.
Features and Character
Zainab (Radi’Allahu Anha) was of a short stature but beautiful and balanced in appearance. She was careful in narrating Traditions and only eleven sayings of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) are reported by her on the authority of Umm-e-Habibah (Radi’Allahu Anha). Umm-e-Salmah (Radi’Allahu Anha) described Zainab (Radi’Allahu Anha) as polite in disposition and constant in saying her prayers and observing fasts. Aisha (Radi’Allahu Anha) said, ‘I have never seen a woman more religious, more pious, more truthful of speech, more generous and beneficent and more dedicated to God than Zainab (Radi’Allahu Anha). However, she was a little hot-tempered and she soon repented over this short-coming.’
She was generous by nature and most contented in life. Se earned livelihood by dent of hard work and whatever she earned, she gave away in charity in the way of Allah. Aisha (Radi’Allahu Anha) stated that with the sad death of Zainab (Radi’Allahu Anha), the poor and destitute in Medina were disturbed and became sad.
Her Death
Zainab (Radi’Allahu Anha) was the first wife to die after the demise of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). She dies at the age of 53 in the year 20AH. Umar (Radi’Allahu Anhu) led her funeral prayer and she was buried in the graveyard of Jannat-ul-Baqi.
