News Khabran / Woman, 61, gives birth to her own grandson
« on: February 14, 2011, 03:45:47 PM »
A 61 year-old American woman has given birth to her own grandson.

Kristine Casey offered to act as a surrogate for her daughter Sara Connell, who had been trying for a baby for several years.

Ms Connell, 35, and her husband Bill are the biological parents of the baby boy, Finnean Lee, who was conceived through IVF, but carried by her mother.

Ms Connell became pregnant after undergoing IVF treatment in 2004, but delivered stillborn twins, and later suffered a miscarriage.

She held her mother's hand as Finnean Lee was delivered at 39 weeks by caesarean section, the Chicago Tribune newspaper reported. When she heard her baby cry out, she was overcome with emotion.

"I lost it. It's such a miracle," Ms Connell told the Tribune.

The new mother was not the only one affected by events.

"The surgery itself was uncomplicated, and the emotional context of this delivery was so profound," said Dr Susan Gerber, specialist obstetrician at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where Finnean was born.

Ms Casey, from Virginia, had previously delivered three babies, the last one some 30 years ago. She is thought to be the oldest woman in the state of Illinois to give birth

Shaminder Singh Shera - Written by GlobalSikhNews on 19. Jan, 2011
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today slapped a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on the state of Punjab for illegally detaining a youth for a month and allegedly subjecting him to third-degree torture.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal today slapped the penalty after the abducted youth Shaminder Singh alias Shera was produced by the Punjab Police.

Shaminder burst into tears when the Court inquired about the incident.
Amicus curiae in the case, Advocate Anil Malhotra, stated that Shera's silence manifested the atrocities he has been subjected to.

Taking a strong view of this, the High Court directed the state to award an ad hoc compensation of Rs 1 lakh to kin of the victim.

Talking to media persons outside the court, Shera alleged that the Punjab Police had planned to eliminate him and project his death as a police encounter.

Sensing that he will be eliminated, Shera ran away from police custody. Shera alleged that Punjab Police wanted to implicate him in a case of waging war against the state and indulging in terrorist activities.

Shera alleged that he was given third-degree torture and mercilessly thrashed for several days. "When I refused to admit involvement in any kind of terrorism activities, I heard the Punjab Police officers planning to eliminate me. I then decided to escape and I managed to do so," Shera said.

He added that Punjab Police wanted to associate him with a terrorist group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).

The development took place during the resumed hearing of a suo motu notice taken by Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal on a news item appearing in an English daily.
The news item had highlighted the condition of the youth's family. The police had taken the defence that Shera was an accused in three criminal cases and was an absconder.

However, he was produced by Punjab Police and released from custody

News Khabran / Bangladesh court orders lashed girl's body exhumation
« on: February 07, 2011, 03:59:04 PM »
The High Court in Bangladesh has ordered the authorities to exhume the body of a 14-year-old girl who received about 80 lashes in public.

Hena Begum died a week after she received the punishment for allegedly having an affair with a married man.

The court ordered a three-member committee of doctors and forensic experts to conduct another post-mortem to ascertain the reason for her death.

The girl was punished by villagers for her alleged crime last month.

The High Court order comes after the initial post-mortem report said there was "no sign of any external or internal injuries to the body of Hena Begum".

Her family members say a village court consisting of elders and clerics ordered the lashing after allegations that she was having an affair with a married man. She died about a week later.

"The court has also asked local doctors who did the [first] inquest and autopsy to appear before the court on the 10th of this month," Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told the BBC.

"We hope that by this time the new autopsy will be done and the report will be available before the court."

Four people have been arrested in connection with the death of Ms Begum. Police say they are looking for 14 others, including a teacher from a local madrassa.

The court's order was partially in response to local media reports which alleged that there was a deliberate attempt to cover up the case as the news had put the local community under the spotlight.

This is the second reported case of a fatality linked to a Sharia law punishment since the practice was outlawed last year by the High Court.
