Five Sikh high priests were present in the packed civic centre of Gravesham during the installation ceremony of youngest Sikh Mayor of UK — Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi.

Dhesi was installed on the evening of May 17 as the new mayor of Gravesham at the annual council meeting of the Gravehsam council in Gravesend. Nominations for mayor were called and Cllr John Burden stood up and explained why he would like to nominate Dhesi.

He said, "Other than his impressive educational background which demonstrates a lot of hard work, he has been a very conscientious councillor and works hard for the betterment of the Gravesham residents. We are also proud that he will be the youngest Sikh mayor and second youngest mayor in the history of Gravesham."

News Khabran / judgement day 21 may 2011
« on: May 20, 2011, 03:41:59 PM »
US atheists are to hold parties in response to an evangelical broadcaster's prediction that Saturday will be "judgement day".

The Rapture After Party in North Carolina - "the best damned party in NC" - is among the planned events.

Harold Camping, 89, predicts that Jesus Christ will return to earth on Saturday and true believers will be swept up, or "raptured", to heaven.

He has used broadcasts and billboards to publicise his ideas.

He says biblical texts indicate that a giant earthquake on Saturday will mark the start of the world's destruction, and that by 21 October all non-believers will be dead.

Mr Camping has predicted an apocalypse once before, in 1994, though followers now say that only referred to an intermediary stage.

"We learn from the Bible that Holy God plans to rescue about 200 million people," says a text on the website of Mr Camping's network, Family Radio Worldwide.

"On the first day of the Day of Judgment (May 21, 2011) they will be caught up (raptured) into Heaven because God had great mercy for them."

Police in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have filed preliminary charges against two women accused of killing their daughters.

The women, who were neighbours and are both Muslim, were reportedly furious with their daughters for eloping with Hindu men, police told the BBC.

Zahida, 19, and Husna, 26, were strangled last week after they returned home to make peace with their families.

The two mothers are yet to make an official response to the accusations.

One of the accused is quoted by the Indian Express newspaper as saying after being arrested, "How could they elope with Hindus? They deserved to die. We have no remorse."

Police say they are still trying to ascertain if the women assisted each other.

Zahida and Husna fell in love with two Hindu construction workers and eloped and got married before returning home to the town of Baghpat last week. Their mothers were arrested by police on Friday.

Correspondents say that marriages between Hindus and Muslims are not common in India. In rural areas especially they are frowned upon by both communities.

Last week India's Supreme Court ruled that people convicted of so-called honour killings should face the death penalty.

"It is time to stamp out these barbaric, feudal practices which are a slur on our nation," the court said.

According to one recent study, hundreds of people are killed each year in India for falling in love or marrying against their families' wishes.

Convictions for so-called honour killings usually carry life sentences

News Khabran / Florida imams arrested for aiding Pakistani Taliban
« on: May 17, 2011, 03:55:37 AM »
(Reuters) - The imam of a Florida mosque and his two sons, one also a Muslim spiritual leader, were arrested Saturday on charges of financing and supporting the Pakistani Taliban, U.S. officials said.

The three Pakistan-born U.S. citizens were among six charged in a U.S. indictment that accused them of "supporting acts of murder, kidnapping and maiming in Pakistan and elsewhere" carried out by the Pakistani Taliban, which Washington calls a terrorist organization.

The indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Wifredo Ferrer and the FBI, charged the six with creating a network that transferred funds from the United States to Pakistani Taliban supporters and fighters in Pakistan, including for the purpose of buying arms.

If convicted, each faces up to 15 years in prison for each count of the indictment.

The charges were revealed as U.S. relations with Pakistan are strained over the U.S. raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

Pakistan's parliament Saturday condemned the raid that killed bin Laden and called for a review of relations with the United States.

The indictment detailed money transfers totaling some $50,000, but Ferrer said there was evidence more had been sent. "This was just the tip of the iceberg," he told reporters.

Two of the accused, Hafiz Muhammed Sher Ali Khan, 76, and his son, Izhar Khan, 24, were arrested in south Florida after prayer services at the mosques where they were spiritual leaders, or imams.

Another son, Irfan Khan, 37, was detained early Saturday in a Los Angeles hotel room.

Hafiz Khan is the imam at the Miami Mosque, also known as the Flagler Mosque, in Miami. His son, Izhar Khan, is an imam at the Jamaat Al-Mu'mineen Mosque in Margate, Florida, according to the indictment.

The other three charged, Ali Rehman, Alam Zeb and Amina Khan, were living in Pakistan and are still at large. Amina Khan is the daughter of Hafiz Khan and her son, Alam Zeb, is his grandson.

Pakistani officials said they had not received any U.S. request for helping in tracking down the three suspects in Pakistan.

"We haven't received anything yet, no concrete information, we've just seen it in the newspapers," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tehmina Janjua. "We are contacting our mission there to check with authorities."

"REALLY QUIET PEOPLE"

The Miami Mosque, a small single-story building in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood not far from Miami international airport, was empty later Saturday. Shoes and slippers, which are removed by worshipers before entering a mosque, could seen outside.

Neighbors were surprised by the arrests and described Hafiz Khan and his family as "really quiet people."

"I've lived here for nine years. We've had no problem or complaint with them. ... We always just said 'Hello' and 'Goodbye,'" said Virginia Vergara, 37, who lived in the same duplex building as Hafiz Khan.

The Miami Herald quoted another of Hafiz Khan's sons, taxi driver Ikram Khan, as saying his father was too old and sick to be involved in backing militants and that none of his family supported the Pakistani Taliban.

U.S. officials said the arrests and charges followed a three-year investigation into suspicious financial transactions and were based on recorded conversations and a trail of money moving from U.S. bank accounts to Pakistan.

John Gillies, a special agent in the FBI's Miami office, said there was no link between this case and the documents and other intelligence taken from the compound in Pakistan where bin Laden was killed this month.

Prosecutors also allege that Hafiz Khan supported the Pakistani Taliban through a madrassa, or Islamic school, in Swat, Pakistan, which they said he used to house militants.

"We have evidence that the madrassa was being used at his direction to shelter members of the Pakistan Taliban and prepare children to become mujahideen," or Muslim fighters, Ferrer added.

"Despite being an imam, or spiritual leader, Hafiz Khan was by no means a man of peace," he said.

The Pakistani Taliban are classified as a "designated foreign terrorist organization" by the U.S. government, which says it is linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"Let me be clear that this is not an indictment against a particular community or religion. Instead, today's indictment charges six individuals for promoting terror and violence through their financial and other support of the Pakistani Taliban," Ferrer said.

Some Florida Muslim organizations said they welcomed the effort by authorities to emphasize the arrests targeted specific individuals and not mosques.

"I think that's very important to highlight so people don't become fearful of the places of worship or the people that go there," said Nezar Hamze, executive director of the Florida office of the Council of American-Islamic Relations.

In another ongoing case that could sour relations with Pakistan, a Pakistani-born man accused of aiding militants in the 2008 Mumbai attacks in India is set to go on trial in Chicago next week.

Steel (Worth £17,514m; Down £4,936bn)
A familiar face on the Sunday Times Rich List, steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal has topped the rankings for seven consecutive years.
The Indian businessman is the highest faller in this year's list in terms of total wealth, because of the plunging share price of his business AcelorMittal.
Mr Mittal has not been afraid to enjoy his riches. He bought his main house in West London for £57m from Bernie Ecclestone. He owns a 20% stake in Queens Park Rangers football club, and has offered to stump up most of the £22m cost for a 377-ft twisting tower in time for the 2012 Olympic Games.
His daughter, Vanisha Mittal, meanwhile made headlines after holding one of the most expensive weddings in history when she married Amit Bhatia in 2005, racking up a bill of some £60m.
Speaking to Tatler recently, Mr Mittal's wife, Usha, said the attention did not bother her. "We are what we are and we live a normal life," she said

Egypt's justice minister has warned that those who threaten the country's security will face "an iron fist".

For months conservative Muslim groups in Egypt have been protesting about the case of Camelia Shehata, the wife of the Coptic priest, who vanished last year. They say she converted to Islam and was being held against her will. But she has now appeared on a TV channel saying she is still a willing Christian.
Last night's attack by a Salafi crowd on the Saint Mena church in Imbaba was about a different woman, who they also allege is being forcibly prevented from converting to Islam.
Prime Minister Essam Shara is sufficiently alarmed by the scale of the violence to cancel his trip to the Gulf.
Some Egyptians believe the military deliberately allows the fighting to continue because it is unwilling to confront the Salafis, who have become more assertive since the fall of President Mubarak. Some believe it is elements of the old regime stirring up trouble. Certainly there are ambitious figures in both communities whose leadership aspirations might benefit from increased strife
Heightened political competition in the run-up to the first post-Mubarak election in September could well spark off more communal clashes. The interim military government's track record in dealing with them, is not encouraging. The overnight violence started after several hundred conservative Salafist Muslims gathered outside the Coptic Saint Mena Church in Cairo's Imbaba district.
They were reportedly protesting over allegations that a Christian woman was being held there against her will because she had married a Muslim man and wanted to convert to Islam

Jaguar, Williams F1 team launch hybrid supercar

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13307919

Jaguar has unveiled plans to build a £700,000 ($1.15m) petrol-electric hybrid supercar in the UK.
It will build 250 cars in partnership with Formula 1 team Williams F1.
The C-X75's ultra-light chassis and two electric motors will help it accelerate from nought to 60mph in three seconds.
It will have an all-electric range of 50km and its overall emissions of less than 100g CO2 per kilometre will be one of the lowest in the industry.
The car will have a top speed of more than 200mph, while the hybrid engine will extend the car's range well beyond 50km.
The move is part of a £5bn investment plan, announced by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in March at the Geneva motor show, to launch 40 "significant new products" over the next five years.
Production of the C-X75 will create more than 100 highly-skilled jobs in the UK. These will be split between Jaguar and Williams, which is based in Grove in Oxfordshire.
The model will be built from 2013 until 2015, although it has not yet been decided where production will take place.
Jaguars are currently manufactured at Castle Bromwich, near Birmingham, although JLR's headquarters are in Warwickshire
