Shayari / Things My Mother Taught Me« on: May 29, 2010, 09:17:42 PM »if the world was a top spinning
round and round, out of control, a mother's wise words would be the hand that stopped it. and all the tumbles tears messes scrapes are a faded sepia memento of yesterday, shot putted out of sight out of mind by my mother, the hurricane typhoon earthquake wonder woman. she is the earth, the sky, the stars, the sun. destruction and creation and anger and joy, she stands tall through the ages. i stand tall as her child, her baby, her darling. "when you grow up, you will change the world," said my mother. 266
News Khabran / Study shows 'gaydar' may be real« on: May 29, 2010, 09:06:58 PM »
LEIDEN, Netherlands, May 29 -- "Gaydar," the supposed innate ability of gay people to identify other gays even in a crowd, may actually exist, Dutch researchers say.
Dutch scientists said gay men and women in a study proved to be more detail-oriented and discerning than heterosexuals when focusing their attention on their environment, and this close attention to detail could help them detect the sexual preference of others. "This is the first time that scientific proof has been found for the existence of a gaydar mechanism amongst homosexuals," researcher Dr. Lorenza Colzato of Leiden University in the Netherlands said. "This perceptual skill allows homosexuals to recognize other gay people faster and we think it's because they are much more analytic than heterosexuals." More perceptive and detail-oriented people may be more likely to pick up on subtle clues in other people that they may be homosexual, the study found, which helps them search out gay friends and sexual partners. 267
News Khabran / Woman left sleeping on plane sues« on: May 29, 2010, 09:03:09 PM »
FERNDALE, Mich., May 28 -- A Michigan woman who said she was left sleeping on a plane for 4 hours after it landed in Philadelphia is suing United Airlines, her attorney said.
Geoffrey Fieger said his client, Ginger McGuire, 36, of Ferndale, is suing for false imprisonment, infliction of emotional distress and negligence. McGuire said she was left on the locked plane at Philadelphia International Airport after it arrived from Washington's Dulles International Airport shortly before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, The Detroit Free Press reported Friday. CNN said United and Trans States Airlines, the carrier that operated the flight, were investigating. Fieger said McGuire was eventually discovered by a cleaning crew, but the crew locked her back in the plane and called for federal agents to question her. "We are working closely with our partner, Trans States Airlines, to investigate the cause and remedy the situation with the customer," United Airlines spokeswoman Sarah Massier said. Trans States Airlines officials could not be reached for comment, the Free Press said. 268

News Khabran / Baby born in van, dad gets ticket« on: May 26, 2010, 09:17:58 PM »
NEW YORK, May 26 -- A New York man who forgot to feed the parking meter after his daughter was born in the backseat of his van says he plans to fight the $35 ticket.
Orlando Caceres, 31, said his wife, Johanna Melo, 33, went into labor Tuesday morning in the family van while the parents were on their way to drop Caceres' two sons, two nephews and a niece off at school with the couple's 11-month-old son and Caceres' sister also in the car, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday. Caceres said the baby was born in the backseat with the help of his sister, Vianca Caceres. The parents said they arrived at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital and Caceres parked the car after paramedics helped Johanna and newborn Miah into the hospital. He said he forgot to feed the parking meter, resulting in a $35 parking ticket. Caceres said he plans to fight the ticket and may bring Miah along to court in support of his story. 280
News Khabran / Woman refuses sentence writing sentence« on: May 26, 2010, 09:00:17 PM »
ELLENWOOD, Ga., May 26 (UPI) -- A Georgia woman ordered to write "I will not dishonor myself by passing a school bus" 2,500 times has asked for a jury trial rather than accept the sentence.
Nancy Nguyen, 19, of Ellenwood, was ordered by a Forest Park judge to write the sentence as well as perform community service, pass a defensive driving course and pay a $350 fine after the judge found her responsible for passing a stopped school bus in March, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday. Nguyen said she will not copy the sentence 2,500 times because she passed the bus accidentally when two tractor-trailers blocked her view. "I'm not going to demean myself and be demeaned by other people," Nguyen said. The town solicitor for Forest Park said the writing sentence is common for drivers under the age of 21 who pass by stopped school buses. Officials said the case has been transferred to state court. |
