The Moving Rocks of Racetrack Playa

Racetrack Playa, nestled between the Cottonwood Mountains to the east and the Last Chance Range to the West, is a seasonally dry lake  in the northern part of the Panamint Mountains in Death Valley National Park, California, U.S.A. and it is famous for rocks that mysteriously move across its surface.

Just so we're clear here... the Playa is a flat surface in the middle of a desert and the rocks weigh as much as 700 pounds!  There has been no concrete explanation for their movement across the dry lake bed.

The phenomenon was noticed over a hundred years ago by explorers and gold miners who noted the large boulders and the gouges they seemed to leave on the surface, but it was not really studied scientifically until about 1948. To this day, the reason for their wayward ways has not been fully explained.
Some people claim that the rocks levitate and move around.  Others claim that magnetism between the rocks, surface, and mountains are to blame.

Other more supposedly educated people believe that the rocks move due to the rocks sliding on a thin damp sheet of water or ice and being propelled by the wind.  For this theory to hold true, the wind would have to be blowing at over 175 miles per hour to muster enough force to budge the rocks.

Some say that the rock movement is the result of pranksters, but this theory can be ruled out right away as the footprints of the culprits would be visible as well. Some of the trails, including foot prints of people, can be fossilized for years before fading.

Whatever the case may be, in the century that this strange phenomenon has been known about, no one has actually seen one of the rocks move and it hasn't been documented anywhere else on the planet.

Despite this attention, the rocks don't seem to care.  They just continue their odd journey across the dry lake bed.

Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon ($1.49 million)

Patek Philippe Sky was sold worth $1.49 million USD in Hong Kong on April 10, 2008. It is considered as one of the most complicated watch ever produced by any company around the world. Its movement consists of 686 parts, some of which are microscopically small. Petek Philippe & Co produced two watches each year- one in platinum and other comes in red rose gold. Gold case comes with a diameter of 43mm and a thickness of 16.2mm. The watch also hold 33 hidden features including a thermometer, time of sunrise, equation of time, the date of Easter, sidereal time.

Vacheron Constantin Tour de l’Ile ($1.4 million)

Tour de l’Ile is producted by a Vacheron Constantin; which was founded by Jean-Marc Vacheron in 1755. Researchers spent over 10,000 hrs to research and develop world’s 2nd most expensive watch. The watch includes 834 parts and 16 horological complications

Hublot Black Caviar Bang Watch ($1 million)

World 3rd most expensive watch and only of its type is made of white gold and black caviar and diamond. Researchers and developers spent over 2,000 hrs to bring this masterpiece on the scene. An estimated 544 pieces of rarer black diamonds are used with 18 k white gold.

Louis Moinet Magistralis ($868,000)

Louis Moinet is the world’s first and only brand to create a watch featuring an authentic piece of the moon. It beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour and features a (double-bladed) self-compensating balance and a flame-blued Breguet balance spring. The perpetual calendar function displays the day, date and month over four years. Its unique feature is its small size, as the perpetual date mechanisms of the period were usually much larger.

Blancpain 1735, Grande Complication watch ($800,000)

World’s fifth most expensive watch was made by Blancpain, a Swiss watch manufacturing company that was founded by Jehan-Jaques in 1735. The watch also displays day of the week, date, month, and leap year. With its 740 individual hand finished components, the 1735 remains the world’s most complicated automatic wristwatch produced in a series.
