Knowledge / The World’s Strangest Delicacies
« on: February 25, 2010, 05:52:04 PM »
Each country has their own traditional dishes like England’s roast dinner, Spain’s paella and Italy’s lasagne; however there are some countries that have more unusual delicacies. I have put together 10 of the strangest delicacies that are not for the faint hearted, so it’s probably best to look away now if you’re squeamish!

Tuna Eyeball - Eaten in China and Japan

Tuna Eye can be found staring up at you in most Japanese stores for less than a Pound. Apparently it tastes a bit like squid and the eyeball comes surrounded by fish fat and severed muscles that are also meant to be quite tasty. To cook, you simply boil it and then season to taste.

Salmon Roe - Eaten in Eastern Europe and Russia

This is the is the fully ripe internal ovaries or egg masses of Salmon, a similar dish to the more widely-known Caviar. In some parts of Eastern Europe, the more expensive Salmon Roe is seen as a delicacy but there are also cheaper versions available in the chilled food sections of most supermarkets

Casu Marzu - Eaten in Sardinia

Casu Marzu literally translated means “rotten cheese” in Sardinian. This is also known as maggot cheese because it is made from traditional sheep milk and insect larvae. The cheese is left for months to decompose and then the Larvae of a cheese fly are introduced into the cheese to break down its fat. They look like see-through worms, just under 1cm long and can jump up to 15 cm when disturbed. Some people remove the maggots before eating where as others prefer to leave them in. If the maggots die, the cheese becomes toxic which has lead to this Sardinian cheese being banned for health reasons.

Cod Fish Sperm - Eaten in Japan

This slippery, soft white food is a popular winter delicacy in Japan. Shirako, otherwise known as Cod Fish Sperm Sac, is said to melt in the mouth like butter and is made from cod milt, a fancier word for fish sperm. It can be eaten both raw and cooked, depending on individual tastes.

Chicken Cartilage - Eaten in Japan

Chicken cartilage is commonly served in bars in Japan as a tasty snack. It can be eaten fried or on a shish kabob. The texture is very chewy and sometimes can take quite a few mouthfuls to break it up properly.

Salo - Eaten in Ukraine

Salo is an Ukraine delicacy that is actually pig fat! Salo can be eaten raw, smoked, fried or boiled but in Russia it is most commonly eaten as a snack to accompany vodka, they cut thin slices and add it to rye bread rubbed with garlic. It is stored in cold dark places where it can last up to a year, however if it is kept longer than that the surface will turn yellow and it will then be used for things like a protection treatment for leather boots!

BALUT - Eaten in the Philippine

Balut is known as “the treat with feet” or “the egg with legs” and is a favourite snack of the Philippines. It is a fertilized egg that is buried in the ground for a few weeks until an embryo has nearly been developed, it is then boiled and eaten in its shell.

Goat Head - Eaten in Southern Africa

Goat head is served complete with cooked brains, tongue and ears! In Southern Africa it is boiled with onions, garlic, tomatoes, ginger and chillies which gives it its flavour, and surprisingly it is served in some very upscale restaurants! News Khabran / Marry whom? Marry him? Settle down, not so fast
« on: February 25, 2010, 04:49:26 PM »

Settle down, the red-hot book, Marry Him, The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough  is flying off bookshelves – causing a stir and consternation.

Author Lori Gottlieb  is a controversial marketing genius. The recent flurry of Valentine’s Day book promotions, appearances on myriad televison talk shows, guest column slots, and a drag out marketing campaign catapulted the author and her book into the SEO stratosphere.

Called "wise and daring"  and "brutually honest",  Marry Him is a surefire bestseller because of the controversy it leaves in it’s wake. It all started in February 2008, when Gottlieb wrote ‘the article’ for The Atlantic. The scathing piece, the basis for the book, was considered caustic, heartless and derisive. Nothing like an effective literary attention-getting-device to garner great ratings.

Best Marketing Ploy for Book Sales: Controversy

Granted, women have strong and heartfelt beliefs about marrying, marrying beneath oneself (what does that mean in 2010?) and, perhaps, choosing to remain single. The topics are very personal and scalding hot. Does Marry Him instruct us to discard our standards, ideals and our Top 10 Qualities list?  Do we merely settle for the next guy, with a pulse, who darkens our doorstep? I think not.

Gottlieb makes a great point in a  recent column in WowoWow about women and the dating things we do wrong. We are raised on stories about Cinderella, Prince Charming, Wolf Ranges and Volvos . Some of us have even placed ourselves on lofty pedestals, unfortunately, just beyond the reach of really great guys. Gottlieb makes cogent points; the book will both  cause you to open your eyes, blink, and  shake your head, in disbelief.  And, in agreement.

What I know: Life is all about compromise, and at this stage of the game, we know that compromise is the panacea of life.  The best relationships are all about give and take. Right?

Remember: Behind every great man is a woman rolling her eyes. And he knows it.

News Khabran / An emotion detector for baby
« on: February 25, 2010, 04:38:47 PM »
Baby monitors of the future could translate infant cries, so that parents will know for certain whether their child is sleepy, hungry, needing a change, or in pain. Japanese scientists report details of a statistical computer program that can analyze a baby's crying in the International Journal of Biometrics.

As any new parent knows, babies  have a very loud method of revealing their emotional state - crying. Unfortunately, the parenting handbook does not offer guidance on how to determine what the crying means. Parents sometimes learn with experience that their child's cries may be slightly different depending on their cause, whether hunger or discomfort.

Now, engineers in Japan have turned to an approach to product design, known as kansei engineering, invented in the 1970s by Professor Mitsuo Nagamachi, Dean of Hiroshima International University, which aims to "measure" feelings and emotions.

Tomomasa Nagashima of the Department of Computer Science and Systems Engineering, at Muroran Institute of Technology, in Hokkaido and colleagues explain that the fundamental problem in building an emotion detector for baby's crying is that the baby cannot confirm verbally what its cries mean. Various researchers have tried to classify infant emotions based on an analysis of the crying pattern but with little success so far.

The team has employed sound pattern recognition approach that uses a statistical analysis of the frequency of cries and the power function of the audio spectrum to classify different types of crying. They were then able to correlate the different recorded audio spectra with a baby's emotional state as confirmed by the child's parents. In their tests recordings of crying babies with a painful genetic disorder, were used to make differentiating between the babies' pained cries and other types of crying more obvious. They achieved 100% success rate in a validation to classify pained cries and "normal" cries.

The research has developed a sound theoretical method for classification of infant emotions, although limited to a specific emotion, based on analysis of the audio spectra of the baby's cries. The technique might one day be incorporated into a portable electronic device, or app, to help parents or carers decide on a course of action when their child is crying.

Knowledge / How to Increase Your Memory?
« on: February 24, 2010, 07:58:28 PM »
In Just A Few Easy Lessons You Will Be Able To Recall
Anything, And Increase Your I.Q. At The Same Time!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to recall any piece of information instantly, without having to refer to a sheet of paper every five seconds? Well, get ready for the shocking truth... Your brain already has this ability... You just haven't been taught how to use it!

UNDERSTANDING HOW OUR BRAIN THINKS

Since the moment we are born our brains have been taught to learn in a very cumbersome way, we have been taught to rely on our left-side brain, which controls logic and reasoning. However, in recent years science has proven that our mind's memory facilities are totally visual. This visual aspect of the brain is controlled by our right-side, which governs our emotions and visualization ability. It also controls our daydreams and artistic sensibility.

Once we understand this fact, we can begin to teach the mind using both sides of our brain. This method of learning creates a balance, and as a matter of fact, it is how we have evolved. By primarily employing our logic side (left-side) for learning, we are only using a small fraction of our brain's natural ability.

You have no doubt heard the saying, 'We only use a small percentage of our brain.' This statement is absolutely true, but with following simple steps you will be using more of your brain, and as a result increase your awareness and your I.Q.

News Khabran / Police: Bank robber posed on MySpace
« on: February 24, 2010, 07:36:38 PM »
DARTMOUTH, Mass., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- A teenage runaway girl whose alleged partner in crime posed for a MySpace photo holding $50 bills has been charged with robbing two Massachusetts banks.

Prosecutors said Kaitlin Ingham, 17, admitted the two robberies but claimed she was forced to carry them out, The (New Bedford) Standard-Times reported. Ingham wept during her arraignment Tuesday as a magistrate ordered her held in lieu of $3,500 cash bail.

ngham and Kristopher Santillo, 21, were arrested Monday at the Dartmouth Motor Inn.

Santillo allegedly robbed a bank in Acushnet on Feb. 6, while Ingham is charged with robberies in Dartmouth and New Bedford last week.

Detective Robert Levinson of the Dartmouth police said the suspects were identified and traced to the motel after relatives reported recognizing them from pictures captured by bank surveillance cameras.

"I don't believe the coercion story. She saw an opportunity and took it," Levinson said.

"Everything obviously leads to these suspects. Pictures don't lie."

Knowledge / The Value of Time
« on: February 24, 2010, 02:08:43 AM »

Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day.

What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course! Each of us has such a bank. Its name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose.

It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow".

You must live in the present on today's deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success!

The clock is running.
Make the most of today.

To realize the value of One Year, ask a student who failed a grade.

To realize the value of One Month, ask a mother who gave birth to a pre-mature baby.

To realize the value of One Week, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.

To realize the value of One day, ask a daily wage laborer with kids to feed.

To realize the value of One Hour, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.

To realize the value of One Minute, ask a person who missed the train.

To realize the value of One Second, ask a person who just avoided an accident.

To realize the value of one Milli-Second, ask the person who won a silver medal in the Olympics.

Treasure every moment that you have! And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time.

And remember that time waits for no one.
Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow a mystery.
Today is a gift.
That's why it's called the Present!

News Khabran / Girl refuses to write devil essay
« on: February 23, 2010, 08:18:57 PM »

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., Feb. 23- A North Carolina high school student said she was willing to sacrifice her honor roll grades to avoid writing an essay contrary to her Christian beliefs.

Tieanna Trough, a student at Gray's Creek High School in Fayetteville, said her English class was instructed to write essays on making deals with the devil as part of a curriculum studying Washington Irving's short story "The Devil and Tom Walker," WTVD-TV, Durham/Raleigh, reported Tuesday.

Trough said her faith bars her from writing about deals with the devil.

"I believe you don't write about how to sell your soul to the devil," she said.

The girl's parents said they agreed with their daughter.

"We can't allow God into the classrooms, but yet they are going to allow the devil in the classroom, that's the way I felt," said her mother, Monice McLean. "They were told if they didn't do it they would get a zero."

Trough said teachers have now given her an alternate subject for her essay, how and why money is important. She said the new essay subject is acceptable.

News Khabran / Dolphin 'Diabetes' Could Be Important Model for Humans
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:48:42 AM »

SAN DIEGO—The best nonhuman model for type 2 diabetes is not a rat or even a primate. It’s a dolphin, researchers suggested at a press conference here this morning at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (which publishes ScienceNOW). Apparently, these marine mammals regularly shift their blood chemistry in a way that can cause problems strikingly similar to those associated with diabetes in humans, such as insulin resistance, excess iron, and kidney stones.

In 2007, veterinary epidemiologist Stephanie Venn-Watson of the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego and veterinary pathologist Sam Ridgway of the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, made a surprising discovery in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) owned by the U.S. Navy. After reviewing 7 years of routine blood samples from 52 dolphins, they found that the blood chemistry after fasting resembled that of people with diabetes—higher levels of glucose and other molecules, such as an enzyme called gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase—while the blood after a meal was like that of healthy people. This allows the dolphins to maintain adequate glucose levels while eating a high-protein diet, Venn-Watson said.

Last year, the group described signs of disease complications associated with diabetes. Some dolphins have hemochromatosis, an excess of iron in the blood, and high levels of triglycerides, problems associated with type 2 diabetes in humans. Some of these dolphins also have insulin resistance.

Now the team has added hypocitraturia (low urine levels of citrate) to the list. As in humans, these dolphins have a higher risk of kidney stones, probably because of the hypocitraturia. The findings are in press at the Journal of Comparative Medicine.

Venn-Watson proposes that dolphins could be the most realistic model for studying diabetes, because their condition is more similar to that of humans than in rats, cats, pigs, or primates. Figuring out how dolphins turn their diabetes-like state on and off—and how this leads to problems—could reveal clues to preventing diabetes in humans, she said.

Gup Shup / The $2,500 Bottle of Green Tea
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:39:22 AM »

You could run to almost any supermarket and purchase a bottle of green tea for about a dollar, but that would be a huge mistake. Why not opt to spend a quarter million percent more for "super premium" green tea?

Packaged like a fine wine, Royal Blue Tea is offering a limited time, high-end green tea for an astounding $2,500 per bottle. Apparently the leaves are hand picked (or something like that) and presumably infused with about $2,499 worth of champagne and truffle oil. Otherwise I am assuming it would be hard to justify the outrageous price tag.
