The technology around communication is constantly evolving -- I can still remember when cellphones looked like ridiculously large play toys. We've come a long way since then! These days, many of us use Skype or Facetime to communicate with our friends and family -- which is great, especially if you're long distance. However, wouldn't it be great if you could reach out and touch the loved ones you're missing? Thanks to a group of students at MIT, in the future, you'll be able to do just that! This was amazing to watch -- I can't wait for the day when I'll be able to communicate with my long distance friends and family through touch!

Knowledge / Close Encounter: Spacecraft Makes Flyby Of Pluto
« on: July 18, 2015, 12:12:57 PM »

It took nearly a decade to travel three billion miles through our solar system, but NASA's New Horizons spacecraft has finally reached Pluto.

New Horizons sped past Pluto early Tuesday morning, making its closest approach at 7:49 a.m. EDT. Pluto was once considered the ninth, and most distant, planet in our solar system, but was downgraded to dwarf planet status in 2005.

A map charting New Horizons' progress

The probe has been snapping hundreds of stunning photos of Pluto and its moons: Charon, which is about the size of Texas, plus the smaller moons Styx, Nix, Kerberos and Hydra. The New Horizons mission has gone smoothly since its launch in 2006 - no small feat, considering that its delicate instruments could be badly damaged by even the smallest space particles as it zips through space at 36,000 miles per hour.

An image of Pluto taken during New Horizon's closest flyby

While NASA engineers celebrated the technical feat, they won't be able to fully exhale until the spacecraft once again makes contact with the tracking station near the Australian capital of Canberra. That's expected to happen on Wednesday morning, at which time New Horizons will upload more high-resolution photos for the world to see. Traveling at the speed of light, transmissions take more than four hours to reach Earth.

New Horizons is about the size of a baby grand piano

New Horizons won't land on Pluto, but it's expected to provide invaluable data to further our knowledge of space. Scientists have already found that Pluto is a little bit bigger - by a diameter of fifty miles - than previously thought. After the probe passes Pluto, it will continue to explore the Kuiper belt - the area of our solar system beyond the planets that contains remnants of the universe's creation. After this, it will eventually leave our solar system entirely and enter interstellar space.

Gup Shup / 10 Circus Workers Who Actually Existed
« on: July 18, 2015, 11:50:18 AM »

If any of you are fans of American Horror Story: Freak Show, then brace yourself for a list of equally fascinating people who have actually existed throughout history.

Unfortunately, it's saddening to realize that many of their lives weren't the greatest, nor were many of them treated properly or with respect, but then again, human beings suck and we still don't treat each other properly, so there's nothing anyone can do. We legitimately just gave women the right to vote this century, so, we're kind of behind on a lot of things.

This list of what people so meanly referred to as "freaks" is incredibly fascinating. Check it out:

1. Francesco A. Lentini:

Francesco is one of the few sideshow circus workers who actually garnered a ton of respect and praise...well, that's after getting bullied for years, of course.

He technically is a pair of conjoined twins, but his "brother" (who is made up of one leg and genitals) got attached to his spine.

After learning to cope with his disability by seeing that other kids had it much worse than he did, Lentini decided to tour with a variety of circuses including Barnum's and Coney Island.

After touring with different circuses, he was so well-respected and loved that people dubbed him as "The King."

2. Schlitzie:

Also known as a "pinhead," Schlitzie was born with microcephalus; a condition that causes a sloped forehead and an abnormally smaller head and brain.

He was always known to be a ray of sunshine and a man who had unconditional love for everyone around him.
No one really knows for sure about Schlitzie's history, but it is believed that his parents sold him to a showman to be put on display shortly after his birth.

Even though he never truly retired, he spent 71 years of his life entertaining all of those around him before he passed away.

3. Ella Harper:

Also known as "Camel Girl," Ella was born with a condition that caused her knees to bend backwards. She performed in circuses in the late 1800s and newspapers everywhere would describe her as "the most wonderful freak of nature since the creation of the world."

She quit after she saved up enough money to go to school, but after 1886, there really is no trace of Ella except for a marriage certificate in 1905.

4. Fanny Mills:

Also known as the Ohio Big Foot Girl, Fanny was born with Milroy disease, causing extreme swelling of the legs and feet. Her feet got to be 17 inches long before she died at the age of 39.

5. Joseph Merrick:

Joseph, also known as the Elephant Man, is an interesting case. He was born normal and only started noticing deformities when he was three years old in the form of bumps forming on the left side of his body. By the time he was 12, his deformities were severe and his father ended up kicking him out of the house, leaving Joseph homeless, hungry and alone.

He became a door-to-door salesman who hid his face behind a burlap mask, but obviously was unsuccessful.

He ended up becoming a sort of celebrity among the elite in Victorian society.

To this day, no one really knows what the condition he suffered from was .

6. Len and Ernie:

The "Two Boys, One Head" is actually Ernie Defort born with a parasitic twin attached to his sternum.

He didn't tour for long because his health started to deteriorate as his twin brother grew. At 12 years old, they decided to surgically remove his twin, but Ernie was emotionally attached to him and didn't want to undergo the surgery.

According to the doctor, Ernie had the intelligence of a 19-year-old. After surviving the surgery, Ernie suffered from depression and a few psychological issues, but ended up living a well-balanced life. He even got married!

7. Edouard Beaupré:

The eldest of 20 children, Edouard was the only one to grow abnormally large. He stood over 7 feet tall by the young age of 17 and still continued to grow. Instead of using his height to sell himself as a "giant freak of nature," he decided to become a strongman.

He toured with Barnum and Bailey Circus, but in 1904, while on tour with them, he collapsed due to a pulmonary hemorrhage and died at 23. At the time of his death, he measured 8 feet 3 inches tall.

Even after his death, however, his preserved corpse was kept on display for profit. Finally, after 85 years of his body traveling from place to place, he was laid to rest respectfully.

8. Nicodemus the Indescribable:

Nicodemus, born John Doogs, was born with truncated limbs. He was, however, remarkably strong and extremely talented in acrobatics.

9. Mignon The Penguin Girl:

Mignon was born with phocomelia which typically stunts the limbs and fuses fingers, but her fingers were fused in such a manner that they resembled flippers, hence her stage name.

She married twice and had a healthy son with her first husband. Her second husband was the crippled former acrobat called "Hoppy the Frog Boy" who performed with her for many years.

10. Percilla:

Born with hypertrichosis, she had two rows of teeth and a face full of hair. Her father decided to make the most of a seemingly awful situation and approached Karl L. Lauther, a well-known show promoter, for help. He immediately hired Percilla and even got emotionally attached to her. So much so, that he hated it when the public would call her "Monkey Girl."

Her father was shot and passed away, so Lauther adopted her as his own daughter.

While performing, she met Emmitt Bejano, the Alligator-Skinned Man. They fell in love and got married in 1938. Eventually, they both retired in Florida and lived happily until Emmitt passed away in 1995.

Percilla was even a guest on Jerry Springer (clean-shaven, however) and peacefully died in her sleep in 2001.

Ik baat honthon tak hai jo aayi nahin
Bas ankhon se hai jhaankti

Tumse kabhi, mujhse kabhi
Kuch lafz hain woh maangti

Jinko pahen ke honthon tak aa jaaye woh
Awaaz ki baahon mein baahein daalke ithlaaye woh

Lekin jo yeh ik baat hai Ehsaas hi ehsaas hai
Khushboo si hai jaise hawa mein tairti

Khushboo jo be awaaz hai
Jiska pata tumko bhi haiJiski khabar mujhko bhi hai
Duniya se bhi chhupta nahinYeh jaane kaisa Raaz hai

The Mirny Diamond Mine

The Mir Mine, popularly called the Mirny Mine, is a formerly active open-pit diamond mine located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, Russia, that at its operational peak produced over 10 million carats of diamonds per year. Some people also refer to this mine as the Navel of the Earth.  With a depth of about 1,722 ft and a diameter of about 3,900 feet, the Mirny Diamond Mine holds the fourth position for depth among the world’s open pit mines. The Mirny mine also holds the title of the second largest largest excavated hole in the world. The airspace over this mine is closed for flying because there have been reported incidents of helicopters being sucked in by the airflow. This phenomenon occurs because the size of the Mirny diamond mine often causes the nearby atmosphere to have drastically different temperatures and current flows.

The search for diamonds in the USSR began out of Stalin’s desire to make the USSR a more independent economy. After WWII, the USSR required large quantities of industrial diamonds to support the reconstruction of the country. Ekaterina Elagina, Uri Khabardin and Viktor Avdeenko were the geniuses behind the discovery of the diamond deposits back in 1955. All three of these individuals were geologists from the Soviet Union during the Amakinsky Expedition. Their expedition was the first in the history of the Soviet Union to successfully find Kimberlite – a volcanic rock associated with the existence of diamonds.  For their discovery, the scientists were awarded the Lenin Prize – a prize similar in honor to the modern-day Nobel Prize.

Mirny Diamond Mine Development

Siberia has quite harsh weather conditions. The summer lasts in Siberia for a very short time, whereas the snowy winter last for about 7 months. When the development of this mine started way back in 1957 it was covered with snow. This made mining very difficult. Jet engines were used for thawing and digging out the permafrost. Dynamite was also used for digging out the Kimberlite. The mining required immense efforts on part of the workers and the mine was usually covered at night. The prime objective was to prevent the machinery from getting frozen.

Revealing the beautiful diamonds

The Mirny diamond mine was able to generate about 2000 kg of diamonds per year. The best quality diamond content was present in the upper layers of the pit. where the diamond content was about 4 carats per tonne. The content quality of the diamonds declined towards the end of the pit and the yield was about 2 carats per tonne in the bottom layer. The high quality of diamond found in the Mirny diamond mine contributed to Russia’s status as the world’s third largest diamond producer.

Interesting facts about Mirny Diamond mine

The Mirny mine would become one of the biggest revenue sources for the Soviet Union, but for the DeBeers company, it would prove a worrying conundrum for decades. Prior to when Mirny began production, DeBeers enjoyed a monopoly in the diamond business since the turn of the 19th century. In order to keep prices high, the company was obligated to buy most of the gem-quality diamonds that the Mirny produced. From their previous experiences, De Beers geologists thought that the Mirny mine would begin to peak well before the end of the 1960s, so it was an incredible surprise to the entire world that the Soviet Union would continue producing increasing quality diamonds into the 1970s.The Mirny Mine was permanently closed in 2011. Over it’s 54 year lifespan, the Mirny mine saw both open-pit and underground operations and commanded awe from the entire world. Today, the mine site as a giant scar in one of the most remote parts of the world.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Do I need to know myself ?
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:19:23 PM »
I project what I see and what I know.
Nothing more. Nothing less.

I can't see innocence or something beautiful in someone unless and until I know and I see that quality in myself. In other words I need to have that quality in me to be able to recognize it in others. For example: If I have never seen what a diamond is or how a diamond looks like, then how can I recognize a diamond from other white stones. It is just Not possible.

Similarly, if I can't recognize my own gifts or my own positivity within myself, it is impossible to see those gifts in the other person. If I myself don't know what it is like to truly LOVE someone, what it is like to totally accept someone for who they are, I can never ever know what true love is or what acceptance is. I can never know if I myself don't know.

I can see something special or unique in someone else only when I see that something in myself. Well, this principle is TRUE to both positive and negative quality. If I call someone manipulative or cunning or give a label, that simply means I have to have that manipulative nature within me too. Only then I can confidently say that someone is mean or calculative. Otherwise there is no way I can recognise that quality.

Life is nothing but projecting out who we are within. If we have ONLY LOVE we see only love in all. If we have only confusion, we see that in the world. We project into our outer world who we are in our inner world

Knowledge / Top 5 Truly Bizarre Creatures
« on: July 12, 2012, 10:20:58 AM »
5. Cnemidophorus Uniparens 'times new roman'These lizards might look normal on the outside, but on closer investigation, a surprising fact is revealed: some species, such as the New Mexico Whiptail, consist entirely of females. They undergo Parthenogenesis, which is embryo fertilization without a male, to produce new offspring. Despite this, however, these lizards still “mate” to increase fertility.
Andean Cock-of-the-rock
times new roman'The females of this species of bird are normal enough, but the males have an odd crest that looks like a large, red/orange bulge. Its feathers consist of reds/oranges in the front, black near the bottom, and a bit of grey. They are national bird of Peru.

times new roman'The largest living arthropod to dwell on land (weighing up to 4.1 kilograms (9 pounds)), this hermit crab is known to climb trees and eat coconuts. Unlike other hermit crabs, only the juveniles wear shells. The older youngsters often wear coconut shells. They come in a variety of colors, such as orange and blue. They are rumored to steal shiny objects.

2. Hairy Frog

'times new roman'This African frog gets its name from the hair-like structure found on the sides of males. These hairs are used to increase the rate that the frog absorbs oxygen, since the males spend long periods of time guarding their eggs. Another impressive fact about these frogs is that they have retractable claws made of bone (as opposed to keratin). However, to get these claws out, the frog must break a bone nodule first. Ouch!

1. Barreleye Fish

'times new roman'Although this fish’s existence has been known for quite some time, it was only this year that scientists fully understood how bizarre it is. These fish have a mostly black body with a transparent head (which was unheard of until recently, since it always shattered while the fish was being brought up to the surface). Although it has two indentions in the front of its head, those are NOT its eyes: its eyes are the green spheres in its transparent head. These eyes can be used to look above for food or look forward when it is stalking its prey.

Gup Shup / Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara review
« on: July 23, 2011, 02:53:22 AM »
A grown up bromance

[/color]Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
Director:[/b] Zoya Akhtar
Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol
Rating:      4 stars

Jokes about teachers. Fights over girlfriends. Silly word games. Bare chests. Rippling muscles. Streaked hair. Sigh. Glossy looking and beautifully written. I must confess by the time I finished watching zindgi na milegi dobara I was convinced that no one can make a bromance as beautifully as a woman.
The film is gentle, taking time out to look at horses running in the meadows, feel the wind the air, swim with the fish underwater. All that male beauty may be a little manipulative and the plot is a little contrived--three adventure sports to test your courage--but the story keeps you engaged.
A meditative take on growing up, becoming a man, taking responsibility for one's actions, it has the courage to go for long periods with no dialogue. A scene where hrithik roshan does a Finding Nemo and another where the boys discover the joys of sky diving is all about just being. Seizing the moment. Living for the day. Yes, yes, cliches all, but shot with such sisterly care that the boys flourish in the female gaze.
Naturally the trip to Spain is not just a trip. It is a journey of the soul. There's Kabir whose family runs a contruction company. There's Imran, a copywriter who is a poet in his spare time (and fortunately writes Javed Akhtar style poems). And there's Arjun, a stockbroker who lives in London and has trouble with commitment. So that's Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar and Hrithik Roshan. And naturally the love of a free spirited good woman Katrina Kaif will cure Hrithik of his permanent state of melancholy.
Lots of manly tears. Even more bare chests on the beach. And many more scenes of drinking wine and tossing back shots (where the women give as good as the men get). It's all very glamorous. And very seductive. Yet the film pulls you in, partly because of the frank, unvarnished performances by its leads. Hrithik is lovely as Arjun, shorn of the pretence that his recent performances have shown. Farhan is sensitive, soulful and perfectly capable of reading out his father's poetry. And Abhay for a change is playing the rich brat who is virtually pressganged into marrying his family friend Kalki Koechlin, giving a perfectly posed performance as a spolit little madam.
My favourite moment of the film? Not the showy moment when Hrithik discovers the meaning of life with one deep sea dive with Katrina Kaif. Or when Farhan confronts his pot smoking ageing painter dad-can't tell you who he is, but it's a lovely piece of casting. Or even when Abhay decides he has to run with the bulls.
It's when the three boys are sitting together on their last day, drinking, singing the Doordarshan theme song.
Lovely. A bromance that has more style and heat than most rubish romcoms. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara? It's a film you will want to watch dobara.
