Families of the 29 workers killed in the Pike River mine have arrived at Greymouth's Omoto Racecourse to place photos and personal items as a tribute to their loved ones.

They left the items on the 29 tables built as a focal point for this afternoon's service.

It was a private moment for the families, with waiting media kept out of view.
