Tutorials / How to Secure a Wireless Network from Hackers?
« on: June 30, 2011, 10:26:11 AM »
How to Secure a Wireless Network from Hackers?The reason we secure a wireless network is to stop people from using the              services of our network who don't have permission to utilize them.              It is harder to secure a wireless network from hackers as compared              to a classic wired network. This is due to the fact that a wireless network can be accessed anywhere inside the range of its antenna.      In order to secure a    wireless network from hackers, we should take proper steps to save    ourselves against security issues. If you don't secure a wireless    network from hackers, you might end up without its service. The    consequence might also include the utilization of our network to attack    further networks. To secure a wireless network from hackers, you should    follow these simple wireless networking tips:    1.         Strategic antenna placement:   The first thing you    have to do is to position the access point's antenna in a place which    restricts the range of its signal to go further than the required area.    You should not put the antenna close to a window because glass can't    obstruct its signals. Place it in a central location of the building.    2.         Use WEP:   WEP stands for    Wireless encryption protocol.  It's a customary technique for encrypting    traffic on a wireless network. You should never skip it as that will    allow hackers to get instant access to the traffic over a wireless    network.    3.         Change the SSID, disable the broadcast of SSID:   SSID stands for    service set identifier.  It is the recognition thread utilized by    the wireless access point due to which the customers are capable of    starting connections. For every wireless access point arranged, select    an exclusive as well as unique SSID. Also, if it's attainable, hold back    the broadcast of the SSID out over the antenna. It won\t appear in the    listing of offered networks, while being able to provide services as    usual.    4.         Disable DHCP:   By doing this, the    hackers will have to decode the TCP/IP parameters, subnet mask as well    as the IP address in order to hack your wireless network.    5.         Disable or modify SNMP settings:   Change the private    as well as public community settings of SNMP. You can also just disable    it. Otherwise the hackers will be able to utilize SNMP to get    significant info regarding your wireless network.    6.         Utilize access lists: For additional security of your wireless network, and if your access point support this feature, employ an access list. An access list lets us determine precisely which machinery is permitted to attach to an access point. The access points which include the access list can employ trivial file transfer protocol (TFTP) now and then in order to download modernized lists to steer clear of hackers.

Tutorials / How to increase your Laptop Battery's Life?
« on: June 30, 2011, 10:24:21 AM »
How to increase your Laptop Battery's Life?[/color]Dear friends you have    read many interesting tips from my site and I think you have gained more    knowledge from them. Now I have a more interesting tip to increase your    Laptop's battery life. There is no matter, laptop manufactures gives you    the guarantee about the battery that how long it works. The battery of    laptop always stops working very early at some stage in essential    research, just like when you are watching a DVD movie.       Follow the few steps to increase the laptop battery's life:    Lower the    backlighting on your screen. The screen of your Laptop takes up significant amount of power and you do not require its maximum brightness. You should have to check your system and decrease the screen brightness it to a comfortable point.

   Stop your wireless    signal when you are not using.
    After turning off your Laptop can save max. 20 minutes of your laptop's    battery time because WiFi can use a considerable quantity of power. By    right clicking you can stop your WiFi signal when you are not using.

   Manage the correct    power scheme in XP
   Windows XP contain a    number of predetermined power plans, which control settings like how    rapidly your laptop turns off and when your screen saver boots in. You    can change your laptop power scheme by choosing Control Panel > Power    Options. For max. Battery life from the "Power scheme" chooses the    option "Max. Battery" and decline the list. There are good choices for    you just like "Low Power Mode" and Portable /Laptop. They don't conserve    as much power as Max Battery. After selecting a power scheme you click    Ok button to finish the process.

    Tutorials / How to Improve Your Computer’s Performance
    « on: June 30, 2011, 10:21:45 AM »
    Few things are as frustrating as dealing with a slow, sluggish  computer. When a computer is brand new, it works wonderfully well. Over  time, though, its performance can slowly begin to worsen. This happens  for a number of reasons, but the biggest culprits are things like  spyware, adware and other computer threats that are unwittingly  downloaded along with other content while online. You don’t have to  download thousands of MP3s, movies or other items to experience these  problems, either – nobody is immune to them. Instead of accepting the  situation, there are plenty of techniques and strategies that you can  use to make it better – a few of the best ones are outlined below.
     Strategy #1: Clean Your Computer’s Windows RegistryThe biggest cause of slow, sluggish PC performance is errors and  problems within its Windows registry. Adware, spyware and other threats  usually target the registry, damaging or misplacing important files  within it. When it comes to PC cleaning, a daily Windows registry  cleaning should be at the top of your list of priorities. However, this  should never be done manually – there are too many opportunities for  major errors that could seriously damage your PC’s operating system.  Instead, invest in a high-quality Windows registry cleanup program and  configure it to run once per day – you won’t believe the difference that  it makes.
     Strategy #2: Remove Unneeded FilesEvery time you log on to the Internet or otherwise use your computer,  temporary files are generated. They are usually only needed once;  however, they don’t disappear on their own. Instead, they accumulate  over time until they are cluttering up your computer’s file system and  affecting its performance. While it’s possible to remove these files  one-by-one, it’s much easier and quicker to use a PC cleaning tool  that’s designed for the purpose. Try to do so about one time per week to  keep your computer humming along with ease.
     Strategy #3: Remove Unneeded ProgramsLike many people, you probably download and try out many different  programs each month. How many of them do you actually end up using on a  regular basis? Chances are, not very many of them. By getting into the  habit of uninstalling unused and unneeded programs, you can keep your  computer’s file system a lot less cluttered. In turn, your PC’s  performance will improve dramatically. You can optimize your computer in  this way by using its Add/Remove Programs feature. Its location varies  by operating system, but you should be able to find it somewhere in the  Control Panel.
     Strategy #4: Empty the Recycle BinWhen you click “delete” on a file or a program, it doesn’t go away  for good – not immediately, anyway. Instead, it sits in a kind of  purgatory in your computer’s Recycle Bin. As things pile up in the  Recycle Bin, your computer can start exhibiting some very annoying  problems. If sluggish startups and frequent crashes are occurring with  increasing frequency – and your computer’s recycle bin is very full – go  ahead and empty it. From then on, get into the habit of doing so about  one time per week. This small but important strategy can make a huge  difference.
     Strategy #5: Perform a Disk DefragmentationWindows isn’t very efficient when it comes to storing files. It  actually splits them up, depositing them into whatever spaces are  available. The more spaced apart the pieces of a file are, the harder  your computer has to work to make them run. The Windows disk  defragmentation system tune-up utility works to piece all of those files  back together again. The process is a long one, though, and only needs  to be done about four times per year. Set it up to run automatically  once every three months. By doing so, you’ll be able to keep your  computer running in tiptop shape.
     When it comes to keeping your computer running optimally, small but regular maintenance is the best way to go. Protecting your PC only does so much; even the most careful Internet users in the world unintentionally download malicious software from time to time. By using basic system tune-up tools, cleaning your computer’s Windows registry regularly, performing regular file-cleaning maintenance and otherwise optimizing your PC, you should be able to keep it in like-new condition for a lot longer. Even if your computer has been performing slowly for some time, beginning this regimen is sure to produce results. In the end, you’ll be able to enjoy a computer that flies along – instead of one that spins its wheels.

    Tutorials / How to Set Up and Troubleshoot a Home Computer Network
    « on: June 30, 2011, 10:21:02 AM »
    Setting up a home computer network may sound daunting, but it’s relatively simple, provided you break everything down into specific steps. Home computer networks are ideal for sharing a wireless connection among multiple computers, especially for those who have a home office, teenagers, or another computer configuration.
     Purchasing a RouterBefore you begin to worry about software, worry about hardware. A  excellent router, like a Cisco router or a Linksys router, will save you  from having to endlessly reboot and reprogram while still allowing you  to quickly set up a home network. Make sure you buy from a company that  has years of experience designing high quality routers that are capable  of handling high amounts of traffic (such as data heavy media files).  Virtually any home network will run smoothly without irritating slowness  or delays.
     Wireless BandwidthAfter you’ve purchased a router, the next step is to determine how  much bandwidth you are receiving from your wireless connection. This  becomes particularly important if you have a household where the network  users are habitually downloading movies or other large data files.  While a router can rapidly transfer this information, it is constrained  by the amount of bandwidth available to the household. A connection that  transmits data at 2.4 GHz with a 54 megabit speed is usually adequate  to the task.
     If your network feels exceptionally sluggish, check to make sure that you are receiving the wireless by ‘pinging’ the network. Alternatively, if you are receiving the full wireless bandwidth but are still experiencing slow results because of the types of media you are transferring, you may consider paying for a faster service.
     Software DriversWhile software drivers for networking are fairly easy to find and  download from the Internet, purchasing software directly from a computer  retailer is recommended as a way to keep your network free of faulty  software. A higher incidence of spyware and viruses makes downloading  free software inadvisable, especially for something as sensitive as a  computer network.
     Purchasing software from one of the major companies, such as McAfee  or Symantec, will also provide you with another vital component of wireless home networking: a firewall. Because wireless networks are difficult to secure, the best option is to buy software that not only allows you to network, but is built specifically to keep out uninvited users. Firewalls are designed to protect your valuable information behind a tightly secured ‘wall’ which can’t be accessed unless a very specific encrypted code is used.
     Basic Set-UpNow that you have all the components, you’ll want to set up the  router first. Install the software driver onto each computer that will  use the network. Set up a passkey that is fairly hard to break. Avoid  simple or obvious terms that an outside user could easily guess. Set up  each computer with this information.
     The company that is providing your wireless connection will usually assign you a name and a passkey. However, in some configurations, you will be able to reprogram this information.
     TroubleshootingNo matter how expertly a system is set up, on occasion a technical  problem manifests, resulting in a lack of connectivity for computers.  There are a few ways to quickly check what’s working and what’s not.
     Usually, problems are caused by one of two things: the software on  the computer itself is malfunctioning, and not allowing the computer to connect. You can test this by seeing if any other computers can connect to the network. If they can, the problem is local to that computer. A simple reboot of the software should solve this problem. However, if the software continues to be unable to connect to the internet, you will need to uninstall the software, and then reinstall it. Sometimes, a version can become corrupted. By wiping it clean and starting anew, the problem should resolve itself.
     The second most common problem is that the router needs a quick  reboot. If you purchase a quality router, you will not have this problem  very often, although every now and again even the best routers need a  quick reboot. Turn the router off for at least thirty seconds. Switch it  back on, and check your connectivity in about ten minutes. This gives  the system plenty of time to reset itself.
     If this doesn’t work, the wireless provider may temporarily be out. Call your wireless provider to determine if they are experiencing an outage, and when you can expect the resumption of service. If all of these methods don’t resolve your problem, there is a basic flaw in your initial setup.

    It is very annoying to sit back for a long time after hitting the shut down button. Learn some tweaks by which you can make it faster.

     The first thing we need to do is access the Registry by going to Start > Run and type in "regedit" (no quotes) then click OK.

    Now with the Registry Editor navigate to  HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop
     Under this menu set the keys to the following corresponding values:
     HungAppTimeout -> 1000
     WaitToKillAppTimeout -> 1000

     Further, scroll down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control
     Set
     WaitToKillServiceTimeout -> 1000

    Fed-up of wasting your time installing your Operating System (Windows etc.), drivers and other programs again and again?
     Think about it, how much time does it take for you to reinstall Windows and then all your needed programs?

     (approx)
     Installation of
     Windows: 40Mins
     Drivers: 20Mins
     Programs: 40Mins

     Total: 1 hour 40 mins at least!!!

     We are going to do that all in 15 mins only!

     We need to re-install Windows (Or any other OS) frequently when it stops its efficiency or gets messed up due to many cluttered dependencies and modifications.

     Here we go!

     Basically, what we are going to do is to create a blind image for  our C: (or system) drive. Here we will be using Paragon Drive Backup (Version 9 in this article). There are many other programs available for making image from disks: eg. Norton Ghost.

     Installation of Paragon Drive Backup
     * Download Paragon Drive Backup 9 (or newer version)
     * Install it. (Ofcourse you know how to install it)
     * Create a rescue CD or rescue removable pendrive using Recovery Media builder or similar option.
     * You are done! Your bootable recovery (backup) CD is ready!

     Preparing for a backup
     (We are talking about C: Drive)
     * I would recommend you to do this procedure after a fresh  installation of your OS. This will help you save the most stable and  compact backup.
     * Install all the drivers.
     * Install all your important programs.
     * Recommendations: Install at least basic programs, an antivirus program (update it too)

     Backing up the drive
     * Insert your recovery media that we created just now (CD/pendrive)
     * Reboot your PC/laptop using the recovery CD/pendrive - Media (you  can do so by pressing Del key or F12 key before windows starts. Choose CD/pendrive as first boot device)
     * Choose the option "Simple Backup" or similar and select the C:  Drive and provide a destination where your backup will be saved (Not C:  of course! You can burn the backup to a CD/DVD or a removable storage too!)
     * Choose compression level. More the compression level, smaller the size, more time will the backup take.
     * After specifying all this, the menu would show: Pending actions. Click on perform or similar option.
     * Wait for the backup to be completed.

     Restoring the Backup - Whenever you need it.
     * Now that you have backup (image) for your C: Drive, you can easily Boot up your PC/Laptop using the recovery media (created above).
     * Choose the source backup (image) file. Also provide the destination as C: Drive.
     * It would show Pending Actions. Click on Perform.
     * Wait for the restoration to be complete.
     * After restoration, boot up your PC/laptop using HDD.
     * Voila! You are done! Your PC/laptop will now have a fresh installation of Windows along with drivers and basic programs installed. All this within 15 mins!
