Knowledge / Significance of the UAE National Day
« on: December 01, 2011, 04:42:50 PM »
The National Day of the UAE is celebrated on 2nd December every year. This article will attempt to trace the background and significance of this glorious day in the annals of the history of the emirates.

UAE

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of 7 emirates, namely, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, Fujairah and Ajman. From a desert land of yore, the UAE has emerged as a glittering metropolitan with the spirit of globalization permeating its very veins.

Let’s taste a slice of history

The UAE was formed in the year 1971 under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In the beginning the UAE was a federation of six emirates to which the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah was added a year later. The national assembly has representatives from each one of the emirates while the Ruler of each emirate has to vote in the Supreme Council of Rulers.

The future beckons…

The UAE has trodden long strides since its birth 36 years ago. Its unparalleled economic growth over the years has been an object of admiration and a subject of analysis the world over, rising cheap holidays industry.

May UAE shine brighter in the coming years… Amen.

Knowledge / Who owns the moon?
« on: November 19, 2011, 07:02:24 PM »
The only place in the universe where a flag flies all day, never goes up or comes down, never flies half-mast and does not get saluted, is the moon.

It is, of course, the American flag, the only country to have landed people on the moon even though British Interplanetary Society engineers had in 1939 designed a ship to carry people to the moon. Since Apollo 11 landed on moon on July 20, 1969 until 1972, 12 American astronauts walked on the moon, spending 170 hours roaming over 60 miles (100 km), planting 6 flags in total. They brought home 880 pounds (400 kilograms) of soil and rock, and 30,000 photographs.

The six American flags on the moon were planted during the missions of Apollo 11,12,14,15,16,and 17. The flags of the European Union, Russia, and India are also on the moon but they are displayed on equipment or probes.

The first landing of the moon is celebrated in the festival of Evoloterra on July 20th.

Last man on the moon

The Apollo 17 crew were the last men on the moon. With Ronald Evans in the command module, Commander Eugene Cernan and scientist Harrison H. Schmitt drove 34 km (21 miles) in the lunar buggy. On December 11, 1972 they left behind a plaque that reads: “Here Man completed his first exploration of the Moon, December 1972 A.D. May the spirit of peace in which we came be reflected in the lives of all mankind.” Cernan was the last man to have set foot on another celestial body.

Last words spoken on the moon

The first words spoken on the moon, by Neil Armstrong, are well known, but what were the last words spoken from the moon?

“America’s challenge of today has forged man’s destiny of tomorrow.” – Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, December 11, 1972.

Just in case you forgot Neil Armstrong’s words (when he stepped onto the moon surface with his left foot first): “One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.” On returning to Earth, he explained that he thought he had said “one small step for a man.”

Who owns the moon?

Planting a flag on the moon does not mean owning it or any part of it. The United Nations Outer Space Treaty (long name: Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, Including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies) of January 27, 1967 states that “outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of occupation, or by any other means.”

Bahaar Rutt me ujaar Rasty,
dekha kro gy to Ro paro gy…

Kisi se milny ko jab bhi Mohsin,
Sajja karo gy to Ro paro gy….

Tumhare wadon ne yar muj ko,
Tabah kiya hy kuch is trha se…

K zindgi me jo phir kisi se,
Dagha karo gy to Ro paro gy…

Main janta hon meri muhabbt,
Ujar dy gi tumhe bhi aise…

K chand raton me ab kisi se,
Mila kro gy to Ro paro gy…

Barasti barish me yad rakhna,
Tumhe stayein gi meri ankhen…

Kisi Wali k mazar par jab
Dua karo gy to Ro paro gy…!!!

« on: October 17, 2011, 03:03:04 PM »
Nazar jab tumse milti hay mein khud ko bhool jata hoon
Bus ik dharkan dharakti hay mein khud ko bhool jata hoon

Tumhen milne se pehle mein bohat sajta sanwarta hoon
Magar jab tum sanwarti ho mein khud ko bhool jata hoon

Mein aksar kitabon py tera hi naam likhta hoon
Magar kuch tum jo likhti ho mein khud ko bhool jata hoon

Mein aksar yahi kehta hoon mein tum se payar karta hoon
Magar jab tum yeh kehti ho mein dunyaa bhool jata hoon

Sirf Aik Shakhs Ko Paaon Ga Jidhar Jaaon Ga

Ab Tere Shehar Mein Aaon Ga Musaafir Ki Tarha
Saaya-A-Abr Ki Maanind Guzar Jaaon Ga

Tera Paimaan-A-Wafaa Raah Ki Deewar Bana
Warna Socha Tha Ke Jab Chahoon Ga Mar Jaaon Ga

Chaara Saazon Se Alag Hai Mera Mayaar Ke Main
Zakham Khaaon Ga To Kuch Or Sanwar Jaaon Ga

Ab To Khursheed Ko Doobay Huay Sadiyaan Guzreen
Ab Usay Dhoondanay Mein Taa Basehar Jaaon Ga

Zindagi Shamma Ki Maanind Jalaata Hoon
Bujh To Jaaon Ga Magar Subhaa To Kar Jaaon Ga

Knowledge / The size of the sun in comparison
« on: October 17, 2011, 10:45:27 AM »
It is the fire of life. It can be kind but it can get angry. But it never throws its weight around. It is the sun. And although it is 330,000 more massive than earth and contains 99.8% of the mass in our solar system, it is small in comparison with some other stars.

The sun never cease to amaze us with its theatrics, its lava flares dancing across its surface in a ballet of nuclear fusion, sometimes leaping millions of miles into the air. And although the sun is big, its intense heat and light makes it difficult to capture good images with normal instruments. So NASA scientists use an Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager and an Atmospheric Imaging Assembly detector to view the ultra-violet (UV) and extreme ultra-violet lithography (EUV) wavelengths released by the sun. The resulting images are spectacular.

Earth in comparison to the sun

Earth’s distance from the sun varies between 91.4 million miles – in January – and 94.4 million miles – in July. The average distance of 92,955,887.6 miles (149, 597, 870.7 kilometers) is called 1 astronomical unit (AU), a measurement that is used to report distances to other planets and stars as well. In short, it’s not a weekend drive.

NASA puts the size of earth to the sun in perspective like this: Suppose the radius of Earth were the width of an ordinary paper clip. The radius of the sun would be roughly the height of a desk, and the sun would be about 100 paces from earth.

The size of the sun in comparison

Our sun is one of billions in the entire universe. It also is fairly small in comparison with other big stars. In fact, our sun is classified as a G2 dwarf star. Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, is twice as massive as the sun and 25 times more luminous. And Sirius is dwarfed by Pollux, which is eight times the radius of the sun. And Pollux is dwarfed by Arcturus, which is almost 26 times the size of the sun.

It’s a big, big universe

But there are bigger stars yet. When compared to Antares, our handsome sun is a mere pixel on a map. And Antares is not even the biggest star. That title is thought to belong to a star called VY Canus Majoris. It is about 2,000 times the size of the sun, or more than twice the size of Antares.

How big is the universe?

The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe calculated the age of the known universe at 13.7 billion years old, based on its radius of 13.7 billion light years. And it is growing bigger every day, at a speed of 71 km/s/Mpc. The size of the whole universe is estimated to be 78 billion light years. If you start traveling today at 60 miles per hour (100km/h) you’ll get to the end of your first coffee stop, the end of one light year, in nine trillion years. Then you just keep going for another 77.999 999 billion light years. Or you could stay here, look after our beautiful planet… and enjoy the sun.

Shayari / kuch kuch pagal hote hain
« on: October 16, 2011, 09:27:24 PM »
pyar ke deep jalane wale kuch kuch pagal hote hain,
apni jaan se jaane wale kuch kuch pagal hote hain,

jaan se pyare lgon se kuch kuch parda laazim hai,
saari baat batane wale kuch kuch pagal hote hain,

pyar jin ko ho jaye un ko chain kahan pe milta hai,
phir ashk bahane wale kuch kuch pagal hote hain,

hijar ke gehre zakhm mile to mujh ko yeh ehsaas hua,
pagal ko samjhne wale kuch kuch pagal hote hain,

khuwabon main bhi anmol milan ke sapne dekhte rehte hain,
neendon main muskane wale kuch kuch pagal hote hain,

is jhuti nagri main ham ne yahi hamesha dekha hai,
sachi baat batane wale kuch kuch pagal hote hainn,

apni zaat ke ujdey gulshan se woh pyar kahan karte hain,
auron ko mehkane wale kuch kuch pagal hote hain,

kisi ke ishq main kho kar ham ko yeh ehsaas hua,
dil ki baat main aane wale kuch kuch pagal hote hain,

Knowledge / Fascinating facts about the hippo
« on: October 13, 2011, 01:52:41 PM »
The hippo’s yawn is not a sign of sleepiness or boredom but is actually a threat gesture, displaying long, thick, razor-sharp canine teeth, or tusks, with which it is capable of biting a small boat in half. Being fearlessly protective of their turf and young, hippos have killed hundreds of people in Africa – more than any other wild animal.

Hippopotamus amphibius means “river horse.” The hippo, weighing 1 800 kg (4,000 pounds) and more, lives in Africa, south of the Sahara and along the length of the Nile river, although its range once included Asia and large parts of Europe. Hippos prefer rivers with deep water and nearby reed beds and grasslands, but are also found in salt-water areas near river mouths, and in lakes in Central Africa. They are hoofed vegetarians, feeding on grass, fallen fruit, and occasionally on cultivated crops such as sugar cane or corn during the night. They spend most of the day in the water.

Although not part of the Big Five, the hippo is the third biggest land animal, slightly smaller but heavier than a white rhino (the elephant is the biggest). In spite of its huge size – 3 metres (12 feet) in length, 1,5 metres (five feet) tall, with a mouth measuring a half metre (two feet) across – the hippopotamus can outrun a human. The bellowing of a bull hippo measures an ear-splitting 115 decibels, sounding like the roar of a lion. (The blue whale is the loudest animal, calling out at up to 188 decibels.)

Nearly all of the famous African explorers and hunters – Livingstone, Stanley, Burton, Selous, Speke, DuChaillu – had boating mishaps with hippos. All considered the hippo to be a wantonly malicious beast. Spencer Tyron, a hunter, was killed while hunting near the shores of Lake Rukwa, Tanzania. A bull hippo turned over the dugout canoe from which Tyron was shooting, and bit off his head and shoulders.

Recent DNA evidence suggests that the hippopotamus is more closely related to cetaceans (whales and dolphins) than it is to any other artiodactyl (even-toed hoofed mammal).

A hippopotamus and a pygmy hippopotamus

The tusk-like incisors and canines grow continuously. They are ivory, valued even more highly than an elephant’s because they do not turn yellow with age. George Washington’s false teeth were not made of wood, as is commonly believed, but were carved from the tusks of a hippopotamus.

The ears and nostrils – located at the top of the head – close automatically when the animal is under water. It has practically no hair, and its smooth skin is quite delicate. The hippo’s skin exudes a red, oily liquid that keeps the skin moist and protected when it is out of water. The liquid has lead to a myth that the hippo sweats blood.

One young is born at a time, after a gestation of around 230 days. Births usually occur in months of heavy rainfall, but can occur year-round. Young hippos will also bask on their mother’s back. A group of hippos is called a “bloat.”
