News Khabran / SYNTHETIC BLOOD: 'RBC CREATED FROM IVF EMBRYOS'
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:46:47 AM »

London August 16:
British scientists have created human red blood cells from spare embryonic stem cells, a major breakthrough they claim could soon pave the way for production of synthetic 'O-negative' blood for medical transfusions.
The red blood cells have been produced from stem cells from spare IVF embryos as part of a three-billion-pound project to develop an alternative source of O-negative blood, the universal donor group which can be transfused into people without fear of rejection, 'The Independent' reported.
In their research, the scientists used more than a 100 spare embryos left over from treatment at fertility clinics to establish several embryonic stem cell "lines". A line, RC-7, was transformed into blood stem cells before being converted into red cells containing oxygen-carrying haemoglobin.
Prof Marc Turner, the Director of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service in Edinburgh and leader of the project, said that synthetic blood made on an industrial scale would overcome the problem of blood shortages and risk of transmitting new infections between donors and recipients. "We've proved the principle that from these embryonic stem cell lines we can generate red blood cells.
"At the end of this three-year period we would envisage generating up to one unit (a pint) of red cells from embryonic stem cells at clinical grade which fulfil all the in vitro characteristics of red cells," Prof Turner was quoted as saying.

News Khabran / 'SUNSHINE VITAMIN' CAN HELP BEAT CANCER, HEART DISEASE
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:45:56 AM »

London August 16:
Milk fortified with vitamin D can make our bones not only stronger but also prevent heart disease and cancer, a new study says.
In colder countries with poor or erratic sunshine, half the population is likely to be low in the 'sunshine vitamin'. The vitamin is vital for calcium absorption and bone health and may help to prevent Alzheimer's, reports the Daily Mail.
Vitamin D-rich foods include oily fish and eggs but with 90 percent coming from the action of sunlight on the skin there are concerns that advice on abstaining from sunbathing is unnecessarily restrictive. Recent research has shown that vitamin D supplements are as good as some drugs at keeping prostate cancer under control. It is also being said that taking vitamin D supplements in pregnancy and childhood could wipe out 80 percent of cases of multiple sclerosis.
Susan Lanham-New, the member of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition and Surrey University nutritionist, said a study of 14,000 pregnant women in Bristol during the 1990s found that more than 90 percent of them were not getting enough of the vitamin. She said: "Vitamin D is known to be vital for a wide range of body functions. A lot of us are very worried about (deficiencies) and think it needs looking at."

News Khabran / GRAPPLING WITH INJURIES, INDIA TO TAKE ON SRI LANKA
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:45:03 AM »

Dambulla August 16:
A depleted Indian team will have to raise their game by many notches, after suffering the heavy defeat against New Zealand, when they take on Sri Lanka in the ODI tri-nation series tournament here.
India lost to New Zealand by a massive 200 runs in the opening match and it will be a huge task for them to beat the hosts, who have won their encounter against the Kiwis. To make matters worse, India will be missing Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh from the line-up. Gambhir is recovering from an injury while Yuvraj was ruled out Sunday after being diagnosed with dengue.
The onus will be on Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik and Virat Kohli, who is expected to replace Yuvraj, to put up a fight. Indian batsmen were troubled by the bounce and pace extracted by the four-pronged New Zealand pace attack and were bowled out for 88. In the bowling department, Munaf Patel has been called as replacement for Ishant Sharma, who is out with a troubled knee.
Pace spearhead Zaheer Khan is already out with a shoulder injury, while Ashish Nehra, too, is recovering from niggles and is doubtful for the match. Dhoni admitted that there is too much of workload on the bowlers. "The workload on the bowlers can be too much, specially on those who are playing both Tests and the ODIs," said Dhoni. Dhoni said India will bounce back from the New Zealand defeat. "We had some days off and we tried to make the most of it.
It was a disappointing loss. But hopefully we will turn up on the field well prepared for the challenges," said Dhoni, who was reportedly angry with the groundsmen here after seeing the unprepared pitch provided to the Indian team for training sessions Saturday. Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara said they will expect a tough fight from the Indian team. "I don't think India are unprepared. India are a good side. In ODI and T20 cricket, it doesn't matter what you have done the day before. If you come in and perform well the next day, you can still win. We know how dangerous India can be."
India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain and wicketkeeper), Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik, R. Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Abhimanyu Mithun, Ashish Nehra, Pragyan Ojha, Saurabh Tiwary, Munaf Patel.
Sri Lanka: Kumar Sangakkara (captain and wicketkeeper), Mahela Jayawardene , Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dilhara Fernando, Rangana Herath, Suraj Randiv, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Ajantha Mendis, Thisara Perera, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva, Upul Tharanga.

News Khabran / BCCI GOVERNING COUNCIL OKAYED MOST IPL DEALS
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:44:22 AM »

New Delhi August 16:
The minutes of several crucial meetings of a committee set up by India's cricket authorities to oversee the Indian Premier League, or IPL, cast doubt on a central plank of the allegations against Lalit Modi, the controversial entrepreneur who ran the Twenty20 tournament for three years.
Since April, officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have sought to relentlessly drive home a one-point message - Mr. Modi was a rogue administrator who had reached important commercial deals keeping the board's officialdom in the dark.
But the minutes of the meetings of the committee, known as the governing council (GC), paint a rather more complex and nuanced picture. Most matters regarding IPL, including many commercial deals, were discussed by GC and other meetings of BCCI and many of these contracts were ratified by GC, according to documents reviewed by ET.
The minutes of GC by no means absolve Mr. Modi. While some of the deals for which he is currently under investigation - such as the broadcasting deal with Sony affiliate MSM and WSG - were indeed discussed at various points, there is no evidence to suggest that BCCI knew about the specifics that are now being investigated. The most famous among these is the facilitation fee paid by MSM to WSG, a sports marketing company, to revive a broadcasting contract that IPL had scrapped.
Other controversial deals, such as one with website Ticket Genie for online ticket sales that BCCI president Shashank Manohar has publicly described as 'irregular', also don't find mention in the minutes. Some of the charges against Mr. Modi, such as bid rigging and kickbacks, are obviously outside the ambit of these meetings.
Speaking at a press conference on April 26, after the IPL controversy erupted, Mr. Manohar had said that most contracts had been singed without obtaining GC's consent. "Now most of the contracts which are entered into have been entered into without the consent of GC or they've been brought to GC after the contract was signed. So GC has no other option and are presented with a fait accompli."
But the minutes describe a GC which appears to be very actively engaged with the minutiae of even small commercial deals. "100% of all decisions were approved. All documents have been presented and approved by GC members collectively. Also, GC members were even otherwise aware of these facts, in the course of their personal interactions with me and IPL," Mr. Modi said, responding to ET's questions on email.
Mr. Modi declined to comment in detail on the facilitation beyond claiming that it was the business of sports marketing companies to buy and sell rights. "I would not like to comment on the same (the facilitation fee) at this point. But I will point out that we sold the rights to WSG. They further sold the rights to many channels. Their business is of exploiting rights... This is how any exclusive wholesaler or distributor functions, buy the whole lot and then sell the parts.
The difference in the sale and the purchase price is his profit. Some call it commission, some facilitation and others service charge." Mr. Manohar declined to comment as the matter was the subject of an ongoing internal enquiry. Mr. Modi, now suspended from his post as commissioner of IPL, is being investigated by an internal BCCI committee consisting of Arun Jaitley, the lawyer and leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Union minister of state Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chirayu Amin, the interim commissioner of IPL.
ET has reviewed the minutes of governing council meetings held on February 5 and August 11, 2009, and on March 7 and 21 this year. This paper has also accessed the minutes of a meeting of the Working Committee of BCCI held on March 22, 2009, and audit observations pertaining to IPL and the 2009 edition of the tournament. In the meeting on February 5, 2009, for instance, Mr. Modi was authorized to make purchase decisions less than Rs50 lakh, while any amount above that would have to be ratified by GC.
Other matters discussed include the appointment of auditors for IPL, prize for the best outfield, slow over rate penalties and a commercial dispute arising out of Big TV, part of the Anil Ambani Group, walking out as sponsors. GC members were certainly not passive listeners. In the meeting, Arun Jaitley and Rajiv Shukla brought up the issue of political advertising in IPL and it was decided unanimously that such advertising should not be allowed.
In the same meeting, IS Bindra pointed out that the contract with IMG, which was about to be finalised for Rs33 crore per year, should not be frozen without obligations and deliverables being defined precisely. The contract was subsequently revised to about Rs27 crore. Regulations for the 2010 season were also discussed at length, with interventions from many members, including BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, Mr. Bindra, Mr. Manohar and Ravi Shastri. Season window, transfer of players, strategy breaks and relations with foreign boards were all discussed.
GC approved the auctioning of two more franchisees, auction dates and time line, and other technical details. In the governing council meeting on March 7, 2010, theatrical rights were ratified, as were licensing deals with Viacom18 and Karbon. New sponsorships and official partners were approved.
It also approved payment of Rs13.10 crore to Jaipur IPL (Rajasthan Royals) and India Cements (Chennai Super Kings) to compensate for the cancellation of Champions League 2008 against unaudited claims of loss of revenue made by the franchisees. Mr. Srinivasan, also a GC member, is the owner of Chennai Super Kings.
The minutes also reveal some unknown details. Civil aviation minister Praful Patel's daughter Poorna, contrary to his claims that she is a 'junior employee' of IPL, attended at least two GC meetings in her capacity as manager (hospitality) of IPL, a position she has held since September 2008. She was later designated as head of marketing services.
The documents show that IPL 2009 held in South Africa resulted in a net deficit of Rs 33.9 crore, which contradicts the widely held notion that every edition of IPL has made money for BCCI. The minutes also indicate that agriculture minister Sharad Pawar strongly supported moving IPL 2009 out of the country as it was clashing with general elections in India, while his government wanted IPL to be held in India with a changed schedule.
The decision to hold IPL in South Africa led to a public standoff between home minister P Chidambaram and Mr. Modi. "I am too small a person compared to Mr. Modi," Mr. Chidambaram famously said in April last year, adding that BCCI did not understand the 'compulsions and concerns' of the police force.
"GC, unanimously along with all the team owners, was of the view the tournament must go on. I was, as the head of the organisation, only implementing the decisions taken by GC. It is unfortunate that I am being made to blame for successfully implementing and ensuring a successful second season," Mr. Modi told ET by email.

News Khabran / GERMAN POP STAR ‘SORRY’ FOR HIV SEX
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:43:21 AM »

Darmstadt August 16:
German pop star Nadja Benaissa admitted on the opening day of her trial on Monday not telling sexual partners, with whom she had unprotected sex, that she was HIV positive.
"I am so sorry," the contrite-looking 28-year-old told the court in Darmstadt near Frankfurt, dressed in a purple shirt and with her hair tied back. She denied however intending to infect anyone with the virus. Benaissa, a member of the all-female pop group No Angels, was arrested last April just as she was about to perform at a Frankfurt nightclub and spent 10 days in custody before being released.
In February this year she was charged with causing bodily harm. If convicted Benaissa faces between six months and 10 years in prison. A verdict is due on August 26. According to the charge sheet, she had sex on five occasions between 2000 and 2004 with three people and did not tell them she was infected, even though she had known since 1999.
One of the three had since been confirmed as being infected with the HIV virus, which causes AIDS, prosecutors had said in February. No Angels shot to fame in 2000 thanks to a television talent show and had a string of hits in central Europe before splitting up in 2003. They reformed in 2007 and competed in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. Before her arrest the fact that she was HIV positive was not public.
When she was charged the news was leaked to the press, sparking a debate about trial by media in a country that partly for historical reasons is highly sensitive about privacy and the presumption of innocence. The other three members of No Angels were due to appear as witnesses in the trial, which was being held in a youth court because the first alleged incident took place when Benaissa was 17.

New Delhi August 16:
India and Mexico are likely to look for ways to enhance bilateral economic ties and discuss modalities to be adopted for the ministerial meeting on climate change to be held in New Mexico when Mexican Foreign Minister H. E. Patricia Espinosa Cantellano meets External Affairs Minister S.M Krishna on Tuesday.
Both leaders are also expected to discuss issues relating to climate change, intensification of economic ties and the UN reforms. The visiting dignitary will also call on Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and meet with Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh. She will also interact with the representatives of trade and industry at FICCI and CII.
This year both India and Mexico are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Several commemorative events are being planned during the year. A commemorative stamp is also proposed to be issued later in the year. India enjoys warm and friendly relations with Mexico. President Pratibha Devisingh Patil visited Mexico in April 2008. Earlier Mexican President Felipe Calderon visited India in September 2007 when both countries elevated their relations to ''Privileged Partnership''.
These visits gave a fresh impetus to our bilateral relations when a number of agreements were signed and institutional mechanisms were set up to take forward our ongoing cooperation. The bilateral trade in 2009 was 2.2 billion dollars (India''s exports were 1.14 billion dollars and imports were of 1.08 billion dollars in 2009). Total Indian investments in Mexico are in the range of 1.5 billion dollars mostly in IT, Pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and packaging sectors.
