Under intense US pressure to stop Taliban’s advance towards the federal capital, Pakistani troops intensified operations against militants in the NWFP killing over 50 of them.
Five die in Patiala scrap blast
Patiala, April 27
Five members of a family, including a girl, were killed and two others injured when a female member of the family tried to break a piece of scrap, said to be live bomb, with a hammer in their house in Lakkar Mandi here this afternoon. The killed persons were Paro, wife of Bania, Kiran and her husband Sikandar, Shamli and her eight-year-old daughter.

Probe ordered against councillor
Batala, April 27
Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today marked an inquiry into the alleged peddling of drugs by a municipal councillor here. Sukhbir said the DIG (Border Range) had been asked to look into the entire issue and file a detailed report.


Bopara stars as Punjab claim first win
DURBAN (AFP) - Ravi Bopara scored 84 as Kings XI Punjab defeated Bangalore Royal Challengers by seven wickets Friday to claim their first Indian Premier League victory this season.
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen was out for a duck as Bangalore made 168-9 in their 20 overs at Kingsmead and Punjab reached 173-3 with an over to spare in perfect conditions.
England right-hander Bopara struck five sixes and four fours during a 59-ball spell at the crease and skipper Yuvraj Singh (30 not out) and Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara (26) offered good support.

Pakistan, UK united in war on terror

ISLAMABAD - Britain and Pakistan reiterated their commitment against terrorism with UK Premier Gordon Brown acknowledging the role of Pakistan in war on terror and the difficulties it was facing in counter-terrorism pursuits and put his country’s weight behind Islamabad to root out this menace.
These views were expressed in the joint press conference of Premier Gilani and his British counterpart Gordon Brown here at Prime Minister Secretariat on Monday evening.

Probe Modi’s role in Godhra riots: SC
Gives SIT three months to submit report

Narendra ModiThe Supreme Court today directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that probed the 2002 Godhra train fire and the subsequent riots to investigate a complaint against Chief Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet colleagues and top police and administration officials that they had aided and abetted the mob violence.
A Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Asok Kumar Ganguly said the SIT, headed by former CBI Director RK Raghavan, would submit its report within three months. The Bench issued the order on a petition filed by one Jakia Nasim Ahesan, widow of a riot victim. Senior counsel Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioner, relied on the affidavits of RB Srikumar, who was ADGP of Gujarat at the time of the riots, filed before the Nanavati Commission, which had also gone into the issue.

Patel and Pinto have always denied dating each other but the pair was recently caught enjoying a lunch in Israel, where Pinto, 24, is filming on location.
And Patel’s mum Anita says she is really pleased to see the two in love. “First it was the film and now everything else seems to have slotted into place,” the Mirror quoted Anita as saying. “Life can’t get any better for him. Freida is really beautiful and I am really happy for them. Yes, we knew he was flying to Israel to see her,” she added.
The real life love story is said to have started on the set of Danny Boyle’s multi-Oscar-winning film. And they have become increasingly close since travelling the world together to promote the movie. – TOI


Oil falls in Asia on swine flu fall-out

Crude prices continued to decline during Asian trade Tuesday amid worries that an outbreak of swine flu globally would hurt air travel, thereby reducing oil demand, analysts said. New York's main contract, light sweet crude for June delivery, dropped 20 cents to 49.94 dollars a barrel. Brent North Sea crude for June delivery was off six cents to 50.26 dollars.

WB, IMF vow to alleviate crisis impact on developing countries

WASHINGTON - The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) vowed here at the joint meeting of the Development Committee to alleviate the global economic crisis impact on developing countries and facilitate their contribution to global recovery.
The two top financial institutions said in a communique issued after the conclusion of the meeting that the global economy has deteriorated dramatically since they lat met, with the developing countries facing especially serious consequences as the global financial and economic crisis has turned into a human development calamity.
