India's Congress Party wins strong support in national election

Reporting from New Delhi -- India's election took five weeks, cost hundreds of millions of dollars and involved 700 million eligible voters from the snow-capped Himalayas to the beaches of south India. But the wait was worth it for the ruling Congress Party alliance, which today won a surprisingly strong showing at the polls.

In front of party headquarters in New Delhi, supporters set off fireworks and people danced in the streets, some carrying posters of party leader Sonia Gandhi, others singing "Jai Ho," from the "Slumdog Millionaire" soundtrack.

"I express my deep sense of gratitude to the people of the country for the massive mandate," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said.

Punjab: Congress wins eight seats in Punjab. SAD (Shiromni Akali Dal) gets four, BJP one

Looks like Captain Amrinder Singh will return to power.


CHANDIGARH:  The Congress party has won eight out of 13 Lok Sabha seats of Punjab while the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal has won only four. The BJP has won one seat.

The Congress has scored victory in Patiala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Anandpur Sahib, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sangrur and Ludhiana.

The SAD has won Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur and Khadoor Sahib, while the BJP has won one seat of Amritsar by thin margin.

A hat trick has been scored by Preneet Kaur wife of former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh the candidate from Patiala and Navjot Singh Sidhu the BJP MP from Amritsar won their seats third time successively.

Preneet Kaur has defeated Prem Singh Chandumajra by about 97,383 votes. Sidhu has defeated Om Parkash Soni of Congress by 2,900 votes.
