Bliss through ignorance denies the essence of life and the problems of humanity. To live without using your ability to discover, to learn, to facilitate positive change in the world, you are denying yourself the ability to live fully and leave the world better than you found it. Ignorance makes you part of the problem, knowledge makes you part of the solution.

"Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment.”

“Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.”

But ignorance does NOT give you ANY probabilities because to live in bliss would mean you don't need knowledge as there would be no need for it. By deffinition Bliss can be a state of profound satisfaction, happiness and joy. It can also be constant state of mind undisturbed by gain or loss.

Ignorance is bliss - To me this statement means, "if you ignore the problem long enough, it will go away." Or in a more severe case, "by not acknowledging the problem, its really not there."

In my mind that statement has nothing do with knowledge. (Disagree if you like, everyone usually does :P) Well, I'm assuming by using this statement you acknowledge(knowledge) the existence of the circumstance(problem) but chose to ignore it. Ignorance implies knowledge in this case. So, before you label a person as ignorant just think about whether he's (usually she's.  :wait:) trying to bamboozle you.

Yearning for knowledge - Is quite a different topic, and mixing the above statement with the latter is just confusing two very different thought processes. Yearning for knowledge:

To live without using your ability to discover, to learn, to facilitate positive change in the world, you are denying yourself the ability to live fully and leave the world better than you found it.

Minus the world a better place. Some peoples objective in life is to contort knowledge in such a way as to harm people for personal benefit/gain. Pursuing knowledge is a natural reflex, this is what I think.

To broaden the context, this doesn't just apply to academic studies, like organic chemistry or  computer science. But also with personal relationships and political issues. Ignorance is "blissier" in proportion to the size of the problem proposed. Just look at the economic melt down, global warming, and the Jews (joking).

In these cases, ignorance was bliss for many years. But now the problems are re-surfacing. So I'd like to modify the statement, "Ignorance is bliss, for the time being."

Ode On A Distant Prospect Of Eton College

Ye distant spires, ye antique towers,
That crown the watry glade,
Where grateful ScienceÊ still adores
Her Henry'sÊ holy shade;
And yeÊ that from the stately brow
Of Windsor's height th' expanse below
Of grove, of lawn, of mead survey,
Whose turf, whose shade, whose flowers among
Wanders the hoary Thames along
His silver-winding way. 10

Ah, happy hills, ah, pleasing shade,
Ah fields beloved in vain,
Where once my careless childhood strayed,
A stranger yet to pain!
I feel the gales, that from ye blow,
A momentary bliss bestow,
As waving fresh their gladsome wing,
My weary soul they seem to soothe,
And, redolent of youth,
To breathe a second spring.Ê 20

Say, Father Thames, for thou hast seen
Full many a sprightly race
Disporting on thy margent green
The paths of pleasure trace,
Who foremost now delight to cleave
With pliant arm thy glassy wave?
The captive linnet which enthrall?
What idle progeny succeed
To chase the rolling circle's speed,
Or urge the flying ball? 30

While some on earnest business bent
Their murm'ring laborsÊ play
'Gainst graver hours, that bring constraint
To sweeten liberty:
Some bold adventurers disdain
The limits of their little reign,
And unknown regions dare descry:
Still as they run they look behind,
And hear a voice in every wind,
And snatch a fearful joy. 40

Gay hope is theirs by fancy fed,
Less pleasing when possessed;
The tear forgot as soon as shed,
The sunshine of the breast:
Theirs buxom health of rosy hue,
Wild wit, invention ever-new,
And lively cheer of vigor born;
The thoughtless day, the easy night,
The spirits pure, the slumbers light,
That fly th' approach of morn. 50

Alas, regardless of their doom,
The little victims play!
No sense have they of ills to come,
Nor care beyond today:
Yet see how all around 'em wait
The ministers of human fate,
And black Misfortune's baleful train!
Ah, show them, where in ambush stand
To seize their prey the murth'rous band!
Ah, tell them, they are men! 60

These shall the fury Passions tear,
The vultures of the mind,
Disdainful Anger, pallid Fear,
And Shame that skulks behind;
Or pining Love shall waste their youth,
Or Jealousy with rankling tooth,
That inly gnaws the secret heart,
And Envy wan, and faded Care,
Grim-visaged comfortless Despair,
And Sorrow's piercing dart. 70

Ambition this shall tempt to rise,
Then whirl the wretch from high,
To bitter Scorn a sacrifice,
And grinning Infamy.
The stings of Falsehood those shall try,
And hard Unkindness's altered eye,
That mocks the tear it forced to flow;
And keen Remorse with blood defiled,
And moody Madness laughing wild
Amid severest woe. 80

Lo, in the vale of years beneath
A grisly troop are seen,
The painful family of Death,
More hideous than their Queen:
This racks the joints, this fires the veins,
That every laboring sinew strains,
Those in the deeper vitals rage:
Lo, Poverty, to fill the band,
That numbs the soul with icy hand,
And slow-consuming Age. 90

To each his suff'rings: all are men,
Condemned alike to groan;
The tender for another's pain,
Th' unfeeling for his own.
Yet ah! why should they know their fate?
Since sorrow never comes too late,
And happiness too swiftly flies.
Thought would destroy their paradise.
No more; where ignorance is bliss,
'Tis folly to be wise.

Thank you for posting the poem. It was a poem that I covered when I was at school and it was indeed the inspiration behind the thread.

However, we mustn’t get yearning for knowledge confused with ignorance as you have already stated. But if we stay true to the question we can deduce that in some circumstances ignorance has to be bliss.

To me ignorance is either real or it is chosen; they are two different things. Ignorance can be bliss just as much as knowledge can be torture. Let me explain; say you are a passenger on an airliner. Picture yourself with a nice complimentary glass of Champaign or what ever your pleasure might be. Sitting there dreaming of your favourite things in life. But you don’t know that the aircraft is heading straight for a mountain. You are about to die. Ignorance is bliss.

But now picture yourself as the pilot of the same aeroplane. You can see the mountain, you can’t do a single thing about it and you realise that the plane will disintegrate when it smashes into the rocks. Your whole life flashes by you and you think of your family; you might have children. If you are a believer then you might even think of your creator. That knowledge would be torture.

But in general I agree with your sentiment.

Well, that bliss was artificially induced by the champagne. ;) Not by the act of not knowing. With out the alcohol you'd definitely be thinking about that mountain every moment your in the air right up until the 180,000kg's of steel lands safely on the ground.

But I see where your going with this. Good post!

Thank you, mind you I also realise it's a false economy to live in ignorance all the time as so many do.
