So let me get this right, there's NO such thing as north indians or west indians?

There's north, east, west and south indians
There's only such thing as an east indian and a south indian
Northern indians are called punjabis and the rest are hindis

West-east-north-south indians
« on: January 08, 2013, 06:13:57 AM »
I have heard of an east indian and a south indian, but not north indian nor west indian. My partner and i actually discussed this and he said, north indians are punjabis and everyone else(meaning east, south, west indians) are classified as hindis(and he has nothing pleasant to say about them so moving on). Do you guys use the terms, north-east-west-south? Like i said, i've heard of east and south, and now apparently north as well, but what about west india(ns)? When i say "west india", i think of west indies.  :D: Reminds me of the cricket team

On a major note it is North and South India.
Yes, East and West are also seen in the context, but why I said North and South on a major note because in South, the South Indians see North, East and West India as North only, but it actually is not.

North Indians to some extent have some similarities in looks, food and behaviour with West and East Indians so may be this is the reason why South Indians see the other 3 territories as one North.Any South Indian who is not well travelled in these parts of the country will easily confuse them all as North Indians.

Obviously you cannot say Kashmiris(North) are similar to Biharis(West), many differences can easily be noticed, whether it is the body language, skin complexion, food, language, accent etc.
Forget Biharis, you'll see a difference in Kashmiris with Punjabis despite both states being close to eachother, Bihar is still far off.

All in all, they're Indians whether North, South, East or West.
Indians from these zones may differ in terms of language and regional cultures, but the basic Indian-ness is found common in all of them.

India is like Europe !! Lol..

perfect answer! :okk:

India is like Europe !! Lol..
In europe, there's central, east, west, north and south europe. Here in NZ, we refer to the people of south island as south islanders and north as north islanders, since the country's divided, there's no west, east or central. Anyhow thanks for this bit of information. It really helps

I think why people refer (North Indian = Punjabi) or (North India = Punjab) because

It comprised the areas of:

In present-day India
 Punjab State
Himachal Pradesh (but excluding the former princely states which were later combined into  the  Patiala and East Punjab States Union)
 Delhi
 Chandigarh
 Haryana

In present-day Pakistan
 Islamabad Capital Territory
 Punjab Province
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan (until 1901, see North-West Frontier Province (1901–1955))

The major regions r north india n sauth india

East n west is nothing

We differenciate these two regions cuz north n sauth india is totally different from each other in their culture, retuals, food, clothe, language. North india is considered as hindi speaking area n hindi is an compulsory language to learn for each n every1 bt for south india its nt must fr them cuz their script n language is totally different
