A Dream Within A Dream

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?

I feel like there should be a discussion over this poem. People will take different meanings from it, however i doubt many would comprehend it! :/

I really got only few ideas....that Edgar is talking abt somebudy who is leaving or dying...
and then telling  that time has passed...and no more hopes i guess..
and then he has depicted passing time with sand as it will slip from hand...so once passed time will never come..and he is paying god to give this time back..I suppose but really tough  to comprehend this... :lost:

the darkness within poe only few can understand...he was tormented by numerous devils and his poems and stories were his escapism.

This poem is a journey towards the realization of life being ephemeral and fleeting. His days refer to his life and lifes actions, they are a dream is like saying that they don't matter. Dreams are gone as soon as you wake up, and they slip away fast. He tries to hold the grains of sand in his fingers, but they keep slipping away. The futile effort to do something more substantial than a dream.
