sometime before taking photos i take some test shoots in Program and then i look at the setting an make necessary changes in the Manual mode as i need them...bcoz too much light and less light becomes problem later... so ISO also help in this... but with higher ISO more grains... :/
higher ISO means more time the shutter remains open for that can be bit too much and annoying too. you need to know the ISO and Aperture settings plus shutter timings in order to take perfect pics. my dad always tell me to keep ISO less .. dnt go over 800
