Heavily armed police have swooped on Melbourne's sports precinct, which is in lockdown during the hunt for the gunman.
The man, of Spanish appearance and in his mid-20s, is believed to be armed with a shotgun and witnesses say that he has been spotted in the area around Melbourne's sports precinct
The hunt follows a dramatic high-speed pursuit on the Monash Freeway through several suburbs this morning.
Police have just released a description of the man who is described as in his mid-20s, of Spanish appearance, with straight dark hair, wearing a dark jacket with red or orange t-shirt underneath and silver tracksuit pants.
He is considered highly dangerous and authorities have warned people not to approach the man.
Police have warned the public to stay away from the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Olympic Park precinct as heavily-armed police wearing bullet-proof vests were seen entering the sports precinct.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Rod Laver Arena have been closed.
Several roads are closed to traffic and pedestrians on Olympic Boulevard, Batman Avenue, Punt Road, Wellington Parade and Brunton Avenue.

Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG Mercedes-Benz reinvented the idea of a stylish, four-door, premium coupe when the German automaker released the CLS in 2004. Last year, the AMG-tuned CLS got a significant upgrade when the AMG-designed and developed 6.3-liter V8 engine was shoehorned under the hood. The first AMG-designed engine, the 6.3-liter V8, is carried over from 2009, good for 507 horsepower along with 465 lb.-ft. of torque under the hood of this shapely sedan. Its V8 burble is made louder than last year’s car thanks to a less restrictive exhaust installed for 2009. The V8 is exclusively hooked up to a 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and an aggressive shift sport mode shift mapping. For 2009, the gearbox blips the throttle automatically on downshifts. On the outside, the new models are identified by their two-fin grille instead of the old three-spoke nose. From the cockpit, a new three-spoke AMG sports steering wheel with aluminum AMG paddles controls the car. Essentially a rebodied E63, the CLS63 puts style above all else thanks to a lowered roof, puckered tail and curvy dashboard. Where the E-Class is practical and upright, the CLS seeks to be evocative and emotional. The CLS63 gets the full AMG treatment, including upgraded brakes, a sport suspension and new 19-inch aluminum wheels, up an inch from last year’s model. It also gets a unique bodykit outside and sportier premium leather seats inside. An AMG Performance Package adds a limited slip differential, a raised speed limiter (to 186 miles per hour, from 155), further upgraded brakes, an Alcantara synthetic suede steering wheel and unique alloy wheels. Major options include ventilated seats, navigation, Xenon headlamps and adaptive cruise control. Specs Engine Engine Type Gas V8 Displacement 6.3L/379 Fuel System SPI Net Horsepower @ RPM 507 @ 6800

Hyundai Equus Sedan Hyundai is keen to crack the luxury market with its new Equus flagship but convincing customers that a brand known for bargain basement prices can also be upscale will certainly be a challenge. With an expected pricetag of roughly $55,000, the Equus is considerably more expensive than any other Hyundai before it but there will be some bonuses for customers. In addition to the generous feature list, which will include premium features such as a rear-seat footrest, rain-repellent window glass, power sun shades, and massage systems built into the driver's seat and rear seat, Equus customers will also benefit from a number of services. Some of these services will include free at-home pickup of their cars for servicing and a free loaner Equus when their car is in the shop. Equus customers will also receive an Apple iPad with the car’s logbook preloaded which they can use to stay in touch with the dealership. Potential customers will also get star treatment, with dealers bringing Equus demo cars to their doorstep for a personal presentation of the features. If the customer eventually buys the car, dealers will also return to discuss the Equus’ performance. Ford Focus RS500 Taking the already potent RS as a base, the RS500 features a revised engine that will really get fast Ford fans talking. The Volvo-sourced turbocharged 2.5-litre has been tweaked by UK-based tuner Mountune. The result is a power output boosted to 345bhp – a 15 per cent increase from standard. Plus, torque has risen from 440Nm to 460Nm, to give the engine yet more mid-range punch. To squeeze out all the extra power, the RS500 is equipped with an enlarged intercooler, which feeds colder, denser air into the engine. A larger exhaust downpipe and new fuel pump have been fitted to keep up with the unit’s higher performance demands. In addition, the engine management system has been recalibrated to optimise the delivery of power for maximum pace. As a result, the sprint from 0-62mph now takes only 5.6 seconds – three-tenths faster than the standard car – while top speed is up from 163mph to 165mph.

THOUSANDS of people could be slapped with fines for offences that would never have attracted police attention in the past under sweeping reforms to police powers. Experts fear swearing in public, with a fine of $100, will be a major money spinner and could become the weapon of choice for frustrated officers on the beat. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh announced the new powers for the state's police to issue on-the-spot notices for public nuisance offences. Ms Bligh said the move would increase efficiency, save time and fast-track more important matters in the courts by stopping minor public nuisance offenders from clogging the justice system. She said the measures, targeting offences such as public urination, disorderly conduct and abusive language, would save the Government between $18 million and $30 million. The power to issue on-the-spot fines of between $100 and $300 could result in public nuisance prosecutions soaring 20 per cent, based on figures from a 12-month trial in South Brisbane and Townsville.

Ferrari 612 GTO: not real, sadly Ferrari doesn't make a new GTO very often. About every 21 years, on average. So with the 599 GTO landing in a giant, drifty plume of tyre smoke just a couple of months back, it's hyper-unlikely that we'll see any other current Ferraris converted to GTO spec in the near future. Which is why German designer Sasha Selipanov has taken it upon himself to imagine how a 612 Scaglietti GTO might look

Skyline R33 Skyline R34 Nissan skyline R33 has a common problem that when battery is removed the airbag sign on the dash board starts flashing. It's easy to get rid of it. You need to reset the airbag using this trick- -Turn on the car that is ACC ON ( not start the engine) and within next ten seconds you have to press the driver side Interior light button for seven times and then Start the engine . -Turn off the engine and then restart the car. This should fix the airbag :) ( It fixed my skyline R33 and I am happy ) I've heard this works on the skyline R34 as well.

How did the world's largest living reptile, the saltwater crocodile, reach so many South Pacific islands separated by huge stretches of water despite being a poor swimmer? Apparently, like a surfer catching a wave, these goliaths can ride currents on the ocean surface to cross large areas of open sea, researchers now reveal. The saltwater or estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is a ferocious giant that can grow at least 23 feet long (7 meters) and weigh more than 2,200 pounds (1000 kilograms). These scaly monsters have been known to devour sharks, and even attack things they can't eat, often assaulting boats in the mistaken belief they are rivals or prey, biting down with nearly 2 tons of pressure - powerful enough to crush bone or punch through aluminum hulls. These deadly predators hunt in tropical areas throughout eastern India, southeast Asia, northern Australia, and on an untold number of the islands in-between. Although these crocodiles spend most of their lives in saltwater, they cannot be considered marine reptiles the same way sea turtles are, because the crocs rely on land for food and water. There were already many anecdotal accounts of large crocodiles sighted far out at sea, but nothing confirmed. Now, for the first time, using sonar transmitters and satellite tracking, scientists now find that saltwater crocodiles actually do ride surface ocean currents for long-distance travel, enabling them to voyage from one oceanic island to another. "Because these crocodiles are poor swimmers, it is unlikely that they swim across vast tracts of ocean," said researcher Hamish Campbell, a behavioral ecologist from University of Queensland in Australia. "But they can survive for long periods in saltwater without eating or drinking, so by only traveling when surface currents are favorable, they would be able to move long distances by sea." Crocodile river travel Working at the remote Kennedy River in northeastern Australia, the team of scientists - which included the late Steve Irwin, "The Crocodile Hunter" - tagged 27 adult seawater crocodiles with sonar transmitters, employing 20 underwater receivers deployed along a 39-mile-long stretch of the river (63 km) to track the reptiles' every move for more than 12 months. They found both male and female adult crocodiles undertook long-distance journeys, regularly traveling more than 30 miles (48 km) from their home area to the river mouth and beyond into open sea. The scientists also discovered the "salties" always began long-distance travel within an hour of the tide changing, allowing them to go with the flow. They halted their journeys by hauling out onto the river bank or diving to the river bottom when the currents turned against them. The researchers originally were just aiming to investigate the territorial habits of the crocodiles and how they divvied up land among themselves. Source: Yahoo news
