Feb 28th 2009 - A documentary film by the Teen Sikh filmmaker, Angad Singh screened at the top family oriented films from around the world, selected for the International Family Film Festival (IFFF), to be held in Hollywood, California, this weekend. Angad became the youngest filmmakers to speak at the festival and win the award.


Roots and Wings is a 36 minute long documentary film on struggles and spirit of the Young Sikhs in America. The film questions the notion of forced assimilation into a melting pot, that is the U.S.A and explores the idea, whether one has to cut off their roots in order to soar high on their wings. In this film, 14 year old Angad Singh, interviews the participants of a summer Sikh youth retreat to understand how they deal with challenges on account of their unique identity that is widely misunderstood in the U.S.A.

Angad’s first documentary One Light which he made at the age of 13 years as a summer project, had screened in over a dozen film festivals, youth conferences, cable and satellite TV and schools in the U.S.A inspiring thousands to take their baby step in the direction of peace by building friendlier neighborhoods. Roots and Wings is Angad’s second documentary film that speaks to anybody who faces challenges on account of being ‘different’ – whether visibly or ideologically. It persuades the audience to expand their horizons and think beyond stereotypes.
