The Sikh Coalition defends the rights of two Sikh military recruits and are calling on the U.S. Army to end its ban on turbans. The men, both medical professionals in the Army, are being told that they must remove their religiously-mandated turbans and cut their unshorn hair when they report for active duty this July.

Blood donation: Sikh bodies break record of Sacha Sauda

Anandpur Sahib, Punjab: The Sikh bodies have finally managed to break the world record of Dera Sacha Sauda by collecting 18,207 units of blood in 16 hours during its massive blood donation camp held here on the occasion of Hola Mohalla.

Camp started at 7:25 pm on March 10 at local Khalsa College and ended at 11:25 pm with final donations reaching tally of 18,207. Earlier, the Sikh bodies have been claiming to collect 25,000 units of blood.

“It was a long and tardy exercise. Before organising it we never knew that there is any world record and nor did we aim at one. Gradually, from different quarters, we were encouraged to set a benchmark and contacted the Guinness Book of World Records authority,” said advocate Jagwinder Singh, the in-charge of Akal Purkh Ki Fauj, that organised the entire activity.

The Guinness Book of World Records has entry of Dera Sacha Sauda, Sirsa, for holding largest blood donation camp in world at Bapu Ji village in Sri Gangananagar. The camp was held on October 10, 2004 and attracted 17,921 donors.

Organisers are yet to compile data on gender basis. “We expect that more than 30 per cent of donor were women, which was a surprise for everybody. The final stats may start pouring in after three to four days,” said Jaswinder Singh Jassi, the spokesperson of camp.

After the data is compiled and formalities completed, the entire dossier of event and its proceedings will be sent to the Guinnesss Book of World Records.

The site for camp was divided into 14 blocks, each having 50 beds. There were around 2,500 donations in one hour averaging 15 minutes per donor. As many as 5,000 volunteers, including 3,000 paramedical staff, were deployed to ensure smooth working of camp.

A team of 100 doctors was deployed at different investigation counters to oversee arrangement. Over 110 blood banks from all over country had assembled to collect blood from this camp.

ANANDPUR SAHIB: More than three hundred years after the tenth Sikh Master, Guru Gobind Singh ji, founded the Khalsa amid the hilly terrains of Sri Anandpur Sahib, this holy town once again gift wrapped another great gift to the humanity from the Sikh community -- the world's largest ever blood donation camp.

As long serpentine queues of hundreds of donors on Hola Mohalla continued till late Tuesday night, each over enthusiastic to stress Sikhism's message of universal brotherhood and welfare of all (Sarbat Da Bhala), blood unit count crossed the figure of 20,000 and could well have touched 25,000, shattering the earlier Guinness Book record of 13,000 plus units collected in a single day.

Backed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib and other Sikh temporal seats, and enjoying patronage of more than a hundred Sikh organisations, the blood donation drive broke all barriers of age, gender, caste and economic status as young and old, poor and rich, men and women awaited patiently their turn to make a statement with blood at a time when much of it is being shed across the world in the name of religion.

"It is remarkable that the Sikh community thought of such a grand sweeping idea that not only sends a powerful message but also underlines how at the end of the day human beings are equal. A unit of blood can save the life of a child, an elderly, a low caste or a high caste," said Suzzane Able, an American photographer visiting India as a tourist who had come to the camp to witness history in the making. She was surprised to know that Sikhism does not recognize any caste. "You have told me the best thing about the community. Now I know the real significance of your motto of universal brotherhood," she said.

At a time when rest of India was busy playing Holi with colors or cow dung, the Sikh community was making a statement with this drive. 25,000 units of blood in flat 24 hours was the target, and the organizers, led from the front by Akal Purakh Ki Fauj outfit, had made sure that all mandatory requirements of the administrators of Guinness Records are fulfilled and cameras keep a record of all donors, quality checks are stringent, medical care at its best and safe blood keeping practices are followed.

With this blood donation drive, the Sikhs beat the Sirsa dera's earlier effort to collect 13,000 plus units on one day.

The sheer scale of logistics was mind boggling as the camp spilled over on to two lakh square feet of makeshift tents, 700 beds divided in 14 blocks of 50 beds each, and averaging 2,500 donations in one hour. All this effort was possible, thanks to an army of 8,000 volunteers, 3000 paramedical staff and 100 doctors deployed for the camp. Army personnel from Jalandhar and Chandi Mandir were among the teams collecting units.

Kiranjit Kaur had not heard of the camp and had come visiting the Takht Sahib with her parents. "I never attend the political rallies that happen at the sidelines but I was mesmerized by the idea of the camp. Me and my sister insisted about donating blood and our parents finally agreed to stay over for the night. We have waited for six hours and hopefully our turn will come," she said.

Baljinder Singh Maur said the camp has inspired him to become Amritdhari. "May be it needed this camp to bring me the Guru's blessings," he said.

The Holla Mohalla festival attracts lakhs of pilgrims from all over Punjab and the rest of the country and is the festival of truth, courage, bravery and service. The milling crowds of Sikhs who came to know of the camp added largely to the success of the effort, monitored for Guinness record purposes.

Sikh enthusiasts had come from, thanks to the massive mobilization campaign to ply blood donors, as far as Maharashtra, UP, Uttarkhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana.

Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Gurbachan Singh, and Damdami Taksal's Harnam Singh Dhumma were among the first few to donate blood to inaugurate this mega blood donation camp at the Guru Teg Bahadur college grounds that ended at 7 am Wednesday India time.

Donors also included Jathedar of Takhat Sri Kesgarh Sahib Giani Tarlochan Singh, former Akal Takht jathedar Prof. Manjit Singh, Punjab Minister Bikram Singh Majithia and Akali Dal leader Kiranbir Singh Kang.  Jathedar of Takhat Sri Kesgarh Sahib Giani Tarlochan Singh performed the ardas as the camp began..

News Khabran / Tata NANO hitting Punjab heavy
« on: April 03, 2009, 04:11:31 PM »
Nano matches Mercedes in Punjab
Vijay C Roy & Vikas Sharma / New Delhi/ Chandigarh April 4, 2009, 0:12 IST

World’s cheapest car Nano is finding equal favour in Punjab, which is a lucrative market for high-end cars like Mercedes Benz, BMW and Audi.

Tata Motors Ltd territory manager Manoj Arora said, “Our seven dealers in Punjab sold about 1,500 forms on the very first day of unveiling the car in the region.” The forms will be available to the remaining dealers in a couple of days. Apart from Tata dealers, the forms would be available at select 97 branches of the State Bank of India at major cities in the Chandigarh circle, he added.

“We simply can’t tell it, you have to visit the showroom and see for yourself,” is how Rohit Kapoor of Automobile Kapoor’s Private Limited, Amritsar, sums up the response for Tata’s dream car. The car was unveiled in Kapoor’s showroom on Thursday, and they have already sold over 200 forms in two days, he claims.

Ludhiana-based Dada Motors too sold around 200 forms in two days. “The response is overwhelming. We have received more than 500 enquiries,” said its process manager Amrit.

Similar excitement was witnessed in other places. While Mehta Motors, the dealers for Tata Motors in Bhatinda, sold around 100 forms in two days, Cargo Motors of Jalandhar, could sell 50 forms during the period.

State Bank of India, chief general manager (Chandigarh circle) Ajay Swaroop said the bank expected its auto loan portfolio to increase five per cent with the launch of Nano. Of the total 300,000 forms available in Chandigarh and Punjab for the first booking to be started from April 9, 50 per cent would be available at the SBI branches.

Last year, the bank provided finance for 9,500 passenger cars worth Rs 280 crore in the region comprising Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and J&K.

Punjab disability 'uranium link'
By Asit Jolly
BBC News, Chandigarh

Tests on children with cerebral palsy or mental disabilities in the Indian state of Punjab have revealed high levels of uranium.

A charity based in Faridkot city said chemical analyses of hair specimens collected from 149 children in its care showed "unexpected amounts" of toxins.

The children included in the study were all under 13, it said.

The result has baffled the authorities as there are no known sources of uranium in Punjab.

'Startling'

The chemical tests were conducted on the suggestion of Dr Carin Smit, a South African metal toxicologist associated with the UK-based non-governmental organisation Defeat Autism Now.

Samples of hair collected from the 149 children, then resident at the Faridkot-based charity, Baba Farid Centre for Special Children, were tested at Trace Mineral, a laboratory in Germany.

The results were startling, Prithpal Singh, head of Baba Farid, said.

"Around 80% of the samples, including those from children with cerebral palsy, revealed the presence of uranium in levels that the experts have described as pathological," Mr Singh said.

"We are informed that there is a fairly well established correlation between exposure to uranium and birth defects, renal damage and several forms of cancer.

"This could well be among the causes of the conditions afflicting our children."

The "unexpected" results have drawn Dr Smit and her colleague Vera Dirr back to Faridkot, where they have now collected urine samples from the children to get more specific evidence of uranium exposure.

No-one seems to have any idea as to the source of the uranium.

Some experts say the problem may be more widespread.

No-one apart from the children at the Faridkot centre has been examined for the presence of toxic metals.

Mr Singh said experts had clarified that the results did not imply any exposure to radioactivity.

Health officials in Punjab said they were unaware of the problem.

"This is not a health subject. We don't know how children are showing such high concentrations of uranium," Punjab health minister Lakshmi Kanta Chawla said.

"It is for the central government in Delhi to deal with the problem."

Beauty product companies have discovered a major market in Punjab
Chandigarh, Fri, 03 Apr 2009 ANI

Chandigarh, April 3 (ANI): A growing number of global cosmetics and skin care companies
are expanding their product lines in the Punjab to capitalise on the growth of urban areas in the State.

Indian skin is being coddled like never before global brands - Maybelline, Miners, Clarins, Revlon and others are some of the popular names introducing high-end, technologically advanced skincare products. Foreign brands, presently, constitute about 20 per cent of the Indian cosmetic market. But foreign share has been increasing as of urban Indian women basic skincare has not remained basic anymore. Sophisticated formulations are finding their way into their lives.

Currently, anti-ageing category is the fastest growing segment. One can notice that a retail revolution is taking place in the cosmetics sector. Currently worth 950 million dollars, it is set to touch 1.4 billion dollars by 2010.

"They are trendy; the latest colours are there. There are different shades. I don't want to put the same shade that my mother puts. I want to have something totally different, something jazzy, something which I see probably on the Hollywood movie. I want to put the same share, which I get from the international ranges," said Pallavi Mishra, a beauty products enthusiast in Chandigarh.

The rapidly increasing number of women in white-collar jobs and their growing taste for sophistication has propelled India to become one of the fastest growing markets for cosmetics in the world.

The growth is also largely being driven by an ever-expanding middle class, which is rapidly evolving due to the expansion of service-oriented industries.

In the quest for quality products at competitive prices, Indian has been sourcing a number of cosmetics from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.

And, the leaders of global cosmetic industry are already making India a springboard for higher returns.

France has been the traditional supplier with imports increasing over 170 per cent in the last five years to 19.39 million dollars.

Imports from the U.S. and the UK have also recorded a significant growth.

"It' been a great response. The consumers have started to adopt the brand really well. It is for the first time that they have an international brand. And the pricing is also at the right level. The growth has been fantastic and phenomenal. To give you an idea, in our second year, we grew 55 per cent over the first year. Now the brand is well- known and we have been able to hold our market," said Alexis Szabo, Regional Director of M.A.C. (Middle East, India and Africa).

Indian and international cosmetic companies are also targeting the 'untapped' market for their products - men.

With an increasing number of Indian men thronging saloons for variety of beauty treatments such as manicures, pedicures and getting facials among other beauty enhancing techniques, cosmetic products sales are going through the roof.

"Earlier, only women used the beauty products, now men are very much using these products. You can see men's clinic and dermatologist clinic for them. Hair remover, permanent laser and all that and they are more conscious about the facial and you find them in the beauty parlor now. So the market size is increasing," said Arvinder Singh, Business Manager, Ebony in Chandigarh.

Indian retail groups, with their strategy to offer quality goods to consumers are bringing foreign brands into the Indian market.

The trend is expected to gain strength, as direct selling companies are also finding India a lucrative market.

For instance, the Toronto-based M.A.C. Cosmetics, an Estee Lauder brand, has set up its exclusive stores in the Indian metros like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

Oriflame, which now sells locally manufactured products in the country, has focused on quality and price, giving the middle class Indian women a better deal to get the cosmetic she wants. By Sunil Sharma (ANI).
