Knowledge / People who performed self surgery
« on: December 25, 2010, 10:48:19 PM »
God made human beings flexible enough to survive in and adopt to most severe and killing situations and act accordingly. Acts of self surgeries performed by different people enlighten the above mentioned fact.

Ines Ramirez

This 50 years old lady lives in Mexico and was mother of 7 kids at the time of surgery. Back in 2000, she was alone in her house, when her labor started. Unfortunately her village has no hospital or doctor. After few hours of continuous pain and  no advancement in her labor, she decided to operate herself. She just took a 15 cm knife and began to cut herself. After continuous cutting for hours she reached her uterus and pulled her baby; who started crying and was alive.Amazing story isn’t it?

After few hours of unconsciousness , she was discovered by a village health work and was taken to the nearest hospital which was about 8-9 hours drive. Few months and she fully recovered, both baby and mother were in good health at the time of discharge from hospital.

Leonid Rogozov

Dr. Leonid Rogozov from Russia is a true medical genius. At the young age of 27 he was stationed in Antarctic as part of  Soviet Antarctic Expedition. While stationed, he developed peritonitis, his appendicitis was worsening.

On the morning of 29 April 1961, Rogozov experienced general weakness, nausea, and moderate fever, and later pain in the upper right portion of the abdomen. All possible conservative treatment measures did not help. By 30 April signs of localized peritonitis became apparent, and his condition worsened considerably by the evening. He has no choice but to perform self surgery as there was no other doctor at Novolazarevskaya Station.

on 30th of April at round about 10:00 PM,with the help of a meteorologist, a driver and few scientists he started operating himself. He sat in reclined position and started cutting his appendix, during 2 hours long operation he got fainted but by luck or sheer will power he was able to compelte the surgery and fully recoverd.

This is one of the most famous cases of self-surgery in the history of the world.

Deborah Sampson

Story of Deborah Sampson is really interesting. She was an American woman who impersonated a man in order to serve in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and was the only woman to fight in the Revolutionary War.

While fighting she got injured, received 2 musket balls in her thigh, an enormous cut on her forehead  and was taken to the hospital,on the way to the hospital she begged her fellow soldiers to let her die in order to avoid being recognized as woman.

Disagreeing to her , one of the soldier took her to the hospital , where doctors treated her for forehead wound, but she escaped from the hospital before musket balls could have been removed. She operated her thigh and took one of the balls out with the help of penknife and a sewing needle. Other ball was too deep her to reach for  and her leg never recovered fully.

Later on in 1783 she was wounded again and this time doctor discovered that she was a woman and was discharged from Army.

Evan O’Neill Kane

He is considered father of moden day surgey and was chief surgeon of New York City’s Kane Summit Hospital. Kane wanted to prove to the world that anesthesia was not necessary for minor operations; for that he decided to perform an act of self surgery. He performed an operation to remove his own appendix under local anesthetic, he used mirrors to enable him to see the work area. Although at this time the operation was rather more major than today, the incision to remove an appendix was much larger than modern keyhole surgery techniques, nevertheless, Kane was well enough to be taken home the following day.

On another occasion, in 1932 at the age of 70, Kane repaired his own inguinal hernia under local anaesthetic. The hernia had been caused by a horse riding accident six years earlier. The operation was carried out at the Kane Summit Hospital with the press, including a photographer, in attendance.

Jerri Nielsen

In 1998, Nielsen was hired as the medical doctor at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station on Antarctica. In the course of her work at the research station, Nielsen discovered a lump in her breast. After consulting US physicians via e-mail and video conference, she decided to perform a biopsy upon herself as station was totally cut off from the outside world during winters.

Nielsen began her treatment, following the advice of her doctors over the satellite link. She first began a hormone treatment. She trained her South Pole colleagues, none of whom had prior medical experience, to form a small team that could assist her in the procedures. Biospy was successful and her life was saved.

Haiti Earthquake was one of the worst catastrophe in 200 years.

FIFA World Cup

No one can deny the fact that football is most popular sport in the world. Football world cup is arranged every 4 years and is second biggest sporting event after Olympics. FIFA world cup 2010 took place in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010. Teams from 32 different countries participated in the event and the matches were played in ten stadiums in nine host cities around the country, with the final played at the Soccer City stadium in South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg.

In the final, Spain, the European champions, defeated third-time finalists the Netherlands 1–0 after extra time, with Andrés Iniesta’s goal in the 116th minute giving Spain their first world title, the first time that a European nation has won the tournament outside its home continent. Host nation South Africa, 2006 world champions Italy and 2006 runners-up France were eliminated in the first round of the tournament.

The total prize money on offer for the tournament was $420 million. Before the tournament, each of the 32 entrants receive $1 million for preparation costs.

Distribution of prize money is as follows $8 million – To each team exiting after the group stage (16 teams) $9 million – To each team exiting after the round of 16 (8 teams) $14 million – To each team exiting after the quarter-finals (4 teams) $18 million – Fourth placed team $20 million – Third placed team $24 million – Runner up, $30 million – Winner.

Oil Spill in Gulf on Mexico

On April 20,2010 British Petroleum’s oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and commencing months of oil leaking unrestrained into the ocean. Efforts to manage the spill with controlled burning, dispersants and plugging the leak were unsuccessful until BP capped the well in mid-July, temporarily halting the flow of oil into the Gulf. The well was then successfully plugged and declared “effectively dead” on September 19. This oil spill has obtained the dubious distinction of being the worst oil spill in US history, surpassing the damage done by the Exxon Valdez tanker that spilled 11 million gallons of oil into the ecologically sensitive Prince William Sound in 1989. It is estimated that over 205 million gallons of oil were released into the Gulf.

Heavy Flood in Pakistan

Sharing its border with India,China,Afghanistan and Iran, Pakistan is a developing country with 160 million population. July 2010 came with world’s worst ever flood in the recorded human history hitting all the four provinces of Pakistan.

According to United Nations over 20 million people are suffering and homeless with over 160,000 square kilometers affected as a result of the flooding, exceeding the combined total of the affected of 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. This is really big!!!!

Floods have submerged 17 million acres of Pakistan’s most fertile crop land, have killed 200,000 livestock and have washed away massive amounts of grain. A major concern is that farmers will be unable to meet the fall deadline for planting new seeds in 2010, meaning a massive loss of food production in 2011, and potentially leading to long term food shortages. The agricultural damages are more than 2.9 billion dollars, according to recent estimates, and include over 700,000 acres of lost cotton crops, 200,000 acres of sugar cane and 200,000 acres of rice, in addition to the loss of over 500,000 tones of stocked wheat, 300,000 acres of animal fodder and the stored grain losses.

Sports Khelan / Top Paid NBA Players
« on: December 25, 2010, 10:11:23 PM »
People love knowing how much money athletes make, so we oblige the public and its wishes – Here are the top ten earners in the NBA for the up and coming 2010-2011 season, with the Lakers and the Magic both sending two players, without Shaq, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Jermaine O’Neal and Tracy McGrady (no.1 last time) who were in the top 10 last season and a whole lot of eye popping figures, some deserve, some not, most of us can only dream of.
For the 2009-2010 list, go here.

Number 10 – Vince Carter, Orlando Magic, 17,522,375 Dollars

Image: Source

“Half-Man, Half Amazing” did make his first Conference Finals last season with the Magic, but didn’t live up to the role intended for him, which was to fill the missing piece that would take Orlando all the way to the title. Carter scored 16.6 points per game for Orlando during the season but had a very series against the Celtics (4-2 loss), averaging just above 13 points per game and shooting way below 40% from the field, ending his first season in Florida in a rather negative note. Carter is making 1.4 million dollars more this year than his first with Orlando.

Number 9 – Zach Randolph, Memphis Grizzlies, 17,666,666 Dollars

Image: Source

Like Carter, Randolph had his first season with a new team, and despite not making the playoffs, was as usual, very productive, delivering his pretty much given 20-10 stat line, finishing with 20.8  points and 11.7 rebounds a night, helping Memphis reach 40 wins, their best record since 2005-2006 and with hope of a bright and playoff filled future at Memphis. Randolph is making 1.6 million dollars more this year than in 2009-2010.

Number 8 – Yao Ming, Houston Rockets, 17,686,100 Dollars

Image: Source

Yao hasn’t played basketball in over a year, but will be ready to start 2010-2011, so it seems. The 7′6 center is rumored to be limited to 24 minutes a night next season, to reduce stress on those fragile, fragile bones. In 2008-2009, Ming averaged 19.7 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, playing 77 games and 9 playoff games before, as usual, going down for the count.

Number 7 – Gilbert Arenas, Washington Wizards, 17,730,694 Dollars

Image: Source

Before Arenas’ legal trouble (understatement) last season, he did pretty well, averaging 22.6 points and 7.2 assists. Then things turned south. Arenas is back, and the record says that when he’s healthy for a full season, the Wizards make the playoffs. With a potential exciting combo with John Wall, if Arenas’ return will be like Vick’s early success at Philly, things could be pretty sweet for Washington.

Number 6 – Pau Gasol, Los Angeles Lakers, 17,823,000 Dollars

Image: Source

The real Finals MVP if you ask me, Gasol took the summer off, resulting in Spain’s very disappointing performance in the World Championships, but priming himself for another great season with the Lakers. In 2009-2010 he did miss 17 games, and the Lakers need Gasol more than ever. Kobe is still number 1 in LA, but he probably wouldn’t be with his fifth and fourth ring if Gasol was still in Memphis. Just to jog your memory, Gasol’s Game six and seven production – 17 and 19 points, 13 and 18 rebounds, 9 and 4 assists, 3 and 2 blocks. Huge Defense. Huge in the clutch. Deserves every dollar. And for those interested in numbers, Gasol is making 1.4 million more this year than in 2009-2010.

Number 5 – Michael Redd, Milwaukee Bucks, 18,300,000 Dollars

Image: Source

One of the two biggest “What the F@$@” on this list, Redd was number 10 in the league last year, making 17 million. Redd has played 51 games in the last two seasons combined, and I’m still hurting from picking him as one of the top 5 shooting guards in the league before the season. The Bucks did very well without him last season, and Redd won’t be back till early 2011 so it seems. More months of collecting the cash while healing.

Number 4 – Kevin Garnett, Boston Celtics, 18,832,044 Dollars

Image: Source

How much does KG have left? His 2009-2010 regular season wasn’t his finest (14.3 points per game, lowest since his rookie season) but his energy, defense and leadership carried the Celtics, along with Rondo’s incredible talents, to a few minutes away from another title to the C’s, especially during the series against LeBron and the Cavs, averaging 18.8 points during that series. Quite a few writers, bloggers and fans I’ve been reading lately swear that Garnett will have a great 2010-2011, but I don’t. Age, injuries, mileage, the body pays for those. Garnett still has plenty of fighting spirit, but he’s not going to have a great year.

Number 3 – Tim Duncan, San Antonio Spurs, 18,835,381 Dollars

Image: Source

Number 4 on last year’s list with 22 million, Duncan, like Garnett, is declining, with 2009-2010 his weakest season yet statistically, averaging 17.9 points and 10.1 rebounds, not too shabby, but not what we’re used to from probably the greatest PF of all time, who’s actually a center these days. Apparently, Duncan, 34, is coming into the season 15 pounds lighter, which might make it easier for the big guy to keep his high level of play for a bit longer. There’s seems to be enough fire and will in the Spurs organization for another title run. Talent? Possibly. Staying injury free will be the key. Don’t see it happening.

Number 2 – Rashard Lewis, Orlando Magic, 19,573,511 Dollars

Image: Source

Number 9 last season with 18.8 million, Lewis actually took a step backwards last season, scoring only 14.1 points with 4.4 rebounds, his lowest scoring average since the 1999-2000 season. He also saw a 3 minute drop in his playing time, averaging 32.9 a night, the lowest since 1999-2000. Lewis isn’t worth the money, we all know that, but his horrible series against the C’s, along with the entire team, just make the amount of cash he’s making much more annoying and difficult to grasp (8.2 points in the conference finals against the Celtics).

Number 1 – Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers, 24,806,250 Dollars

With so much Cash and Titles, You'd be smiling too

Image: Source

Five time NBA champions and two time NBA Finals MVP. He’s not the best player in the league, LeBron is, but no one wants to win more badly than Kobe, and thanks to Gasol and the huge talent surrounding him, Bryant does win more than anyone else, and deserves to be on top of this list, which he was runner-up on last season, thanks to McGrady still earning huge cash for nothing. Just for the info, McGrady will be wearing Pistons uniform in 2010-2011, making 800,000 dollars.

Enough Said, Enough Heard!!

Chalo, jidda vi tuci kehnde ho theek aa. Jis tra thuadi soch aa oh thuade laee theek aa. Mere soch vichaar thuaade naloN vakhre ne. Te mein thuanu samjaun di koshash keeti aa bhar tuci nahi samje, is da matkab eh hi hai ke asiN do jaane is gal te hamesahN vakhre hi rama ge. I have explained too you why in principle I am against any beauty contests.

Thuadi thread the title Miss World Punjaban hai, Mein thuanu das vi ditta hai ke modelaN di koi lod nahi. Es gal te thuanu akal karni chahidi aa.

Now, since you have decided to use abusive language (as in waheguru) it has only confirmed to me that you need to give your own head a good shake as you clearly are incapable of understanding the points I make. Incidentally, it doesn't just happen in London; it happens in Canada, the US and India. There is plenty kanjarkhana in Punjab too.

Ik hor vi gal, tuci meinu dasan lag pae kisi di dhee bhen vari?. Eh galaN taN mein thuanu pehlaN keh ditiaN. Meinu Punjabi dheeaN bhena da thuade naloN ziada fikr hai. Thuanu es gal te meinu koi lecture dehn di zaroorat nahi.

Lastly, don't lecture me about thirteen and fourteen year old girls, I know exactly what my principles are and they are for good intention. Now it is enough said.

What a ridiculous statement, a model's interview is the same as that of an engineer? Is the engineer at risk of having to wear a bikini? Or for that matter wear other revealing costumes. Is the engineer judged on his looks? Of course he is not but a model is. Jeh Punjabi virsa badauna chauhnde ho te fir modela di ki lode aa? Ohda Punjabi virsa promote karo. Sada haq hai ungliaN chak ke bolan da jadoN sanu koi gal principal vich ghalat lag di aa.

How you know that happens in Punjaban Competition. Who says? Give me a valid source that for Punjaban competition a girl walk in bikini and then we talk!!

All you said is true for a English Model. That not the same girl who is in the picture, she is punjabi and I am talking about her and punjaban competition, bakki jenna marji lecture charee javo.. sariya da apna point of view hunda.. Koi credit denna pasand karda aa.. Teh koi nai. I can't force you into it, apne marji aa tere mitra!!

- Problem I have with that - These girls are young (may be in there grade 12) and other than studing take part in competition. Many will end up an engineer or doctor itself. And saying they stand in the same boat as a Porn star. waheguru? Give you damn head a shake. Might be true in London, don't happen around here!!

- I respect you, but stop making assumptions just for the sake of an argument. Evve kesse de Dhee bheen baree najeej boli janna.. Eh kehho jehhe sayanp aa. I don't know her but she is punjabi that is enough for me.
Oh bachiya ne.. Kuch akal karoo.. Porn star dusde oo.. Aukha!!
